I guess timing is everything. My local KTM dealer (Motomember in Purcellville, VA) decided today they are ready to clear their supply of 2020 Super Adventure S bikes. $13,882 will take home one of their 5...make that 4 remaining SAS models. I figure even if it turns out to be a mistake, at that price, how bad could it be?

When the GM first sent me the price, I thought it must be a deal he was giving me due to our long relationship. Nope, it's for anyone that wants the S. Not bad for a bike with a MSRP of $18,599.

Not sure when I'll pick it up, but I told them I'll take one in orange.
WOW!!! That's the price of the Guzzi V85 for a lot more bike! Can't wait to see it but I'll never be able to keep up with you now.
Congrats!

Right on Dirt Dad!! That is a hell of a bike!! No loose spokes and the suspension is amazing!! And do not be concerned at all having a chain. The OEM chains that KTM used requires very little maintenance. To make it super simple and zero mess get a bottle of Finish Line Dry Lube.
One 4oz bottle will last at least a 10 day trip. It's all I used on my Ninja when traveling.

As far as the KTM 1290 inspection, make sure you do a good one when you get home. I highly recommend pulling the tank and open the airbox to make sure the filter is installed correctly. Also double/triple check every single electrical connector. As I'm sure you are aware, the KTM's are a very high maintenance machine. You have to stay on top of the maintenance schedule on these.

Boy oh boy that is a lot of bike!! You are going to have a blast on it!!

Thanks, yes that is an amazing price. I had told DM with three bikes being considered as the possible "next" bike it was almost paralizing. When I told her the price of the KTM she responded with, "well that's a no-brainer." Yes, yes it is. About 10 or 11K less than a big GS. I'm willing to give it a shot, chain and all.

Congrats! They are impressive machines for sure. Strong engine and really good suspension.

Another thing to consider is you can actually take that bike to a track and do hot laps on it. There are very few bikes that have that kind of HP and are as light. What an amazing machine you got. Too much bike for me but for the price you got it for......

Holy Cow Man!!!! i was looking at the specs on that bike. WOW! 160HP and estimated top speed 162MPH. The electronics package is amazing for that price. Automatic electronic suspension adjustment, steering stabilizer, slipper clutch, cruise, 6.5 " taft screen, adjustable windscreen. 6 gallon tank all at 474LBS! DAAAUUM fine price for a new bike with that much to offer. I don't know if i am disciplined enough to have that much power, might lose my license. As already pointed out. That bike will have a 530 Oring chain. Nearly All the big pony bikes run a chain. I am sure you already know to not use the high pressure washer on the chain. Also the orings are permanently lubed. You only have to lube the inner rollers. Super easy with a centerstand. Chain technology has come a long way. No worries. I wasn't all that jealous until i read the specs on your bike. You are a lucky man! ENJOY!!!!! :)

Thanks guys. Despite all the beer, tonight was sobering taking apart my beloved Tenere in prep for sale. It's been an awesome bike. Bike is as stock as I'm going to make it. It's hard to see it go. The worst is yet to come....washing it. God, I hate that. I asked Larry (GM) if he had someone I could pay...he said no. I asked DM as sweetly as I could, jury still out. I hate making bikes clean. Goes against my nature.

Looking forward to picking up the new beast. All the KTM stuff got installed today in prep for me. Now I just need to show up with a check and take it home... the long way.

Congrats on your new KTM, Dirt__Dad, I hope that you enjoy it it. I just went orange myself with a recent purchase of A 790 Adventure S. Letting go of my Tenere' after 9 great years was not an easy choice. The lighter weight and plenty of horsepower is what ultimately made my decision. The 790 is quite good and I am sure your Super Adventure will be all that you you need it to be as well. If/when Yamaha decides to significantly update the 1200 Tenere' it will definitely get my consideration for a return to the Yamaha family. In the mean time, I will be more than happy to split riding time between the V85TT and the 790. :)

Hmmmm. . . . Does that mean that Mr. Trump might be a KTM fan? So, what do y'all think the chances are for Yamaha to put the MT / FZ-10 motor into the Tenere? Couldn't find any engine measurements, but it looks compact enough. And, there'd be plenty of HP. It's another cross-plane motor.

I hope they could squeeze 10 more miles to the gallon out of it. The MT-10 averages in the low 30's. We would be losing 50-60 miles on every fill up. There is a reason they call that bike the EMPTY-10

Thanks, and I know exactly what you mean. Like you (I believe), I was an original PDP owner. Had 4 of them over the years. Each time I bought another one I considered everything else available, then made the obvious choice with another Tenere. The market has changed a lot. It's actually very difficult to think of me without a Tenere. Not going to be an easy sale day.

Glad you are enjoying the 790. I'm hoping the whole KTM thing goes well long term for both of us.

...and yes, if Mother Yam comes out with an updated Super Tenere, I'll be watching very closely.

The way you purchased your bike was really smart. You knew what you were looking for and were honest with yourself. I'm speculating here, but I think the reason you got the good deal on the Adventure S is because of the popularity of the Adventure R model. There a very few riders that are going to use the R models off road suspension to anywhere near its potential. And it has nowhere near the touring comfort of the one that you bought.

As long as you maintain the bike you are going to get a lot of trouble free miles out of it. KTM has a lot of experience with that Vtwin and the WP suspension is top shelf. I put over 100 miles on both the R and S models on the pavement. The only reason I did not consider them was I am not enough of a rider for that kind of power.

KTM's motto "Ready To Race" is no joke.

And if you want to manage the heat off the bike or set it up with cool modifications, Rottweiler Performance has you covered.

It sounds crazy and expensive but by simply getting an intake/exhaust system with a map the heat will all but disappear off the motor.

Congratulation :)
I was thinking you would get the Africa Twin, reading your testdrive about it.

You are right, it does sound crazy.

The main reason I didn't buy a 1290 was because of the heat. Several test rides confirmed it was a great bike but the seat was a nut cooker. I can't stand a hot seat during warm weather. While I was seriously shopping for one I read a ton on the forums and the heat remains an issue for a multitude of owners even with the suggested fixes. Some folks can handle it some can't. I am in the camp that can't.

I am hoping the next gen to be released next year has a fix for the hot seat.

That would be ideal. But, it's been my experience "with great power, comes great responsibility fuel consumption". The Ducati also gets low 30's for mileage. It's hard to have your cake, and eat it too.
