I understand, I've been doing them since I was a child. Without that background I can see how it would be downright scary.

For me whenever I get a new dirt bike or ATV I would spend hours in the back yard learning to wheelie it. Just going back and forth time and time again practicing control. It's part of owning a bike for me.

It's an obsession. I try to wheelie everything I ride, including golf carts, lawn mowers, and tractors.

My family gets very concerned. Like in this very first ever post to youtube, you can hear how concerned my daughter gets when I crash doing a wheelie.

Not a wheelie obsessed guy. Also, I never considered my Gen1 FZ1 boring. It probably considered me boring as it always seemed to be saying...”C’mon, go faster, go faster.” Only the wisdom and experience of old age (and the minimal LEO presence in a small, sparsely populated state) kept me reined in.
The ST, on the other hand, is happy wherever. It says...”Whatever you want, is fine with me.”
And while I can appreciate the added zest of more power (drooling over 1290 KTM’s), the flashed ST is really good for my current needs. A sane pace is my method of meditation these days.
That said, I would like a little zip in my next ride. I don’t need 150hp, but 50hp won’t cut it either. Decisions....decisions.

If you are looking for another light adventure bike you might want to try out the Kawasaki Versys 650. I had the Ninja version of this bike and It is a fantastic bike with a lot of HP (almost 68 RWHP) potential. And the gearing options are endless. It has a cassette style transmission that can be removed and replaced quickly. I peeled off over 30,000 miles on that bike in just a few years.

That's exactly why I say buying a bike is a very personal thing, and one person's opinion may have nothing to do with another person's perception of the same bike.

My 2005 FZ1 was flawless at doing everything it was designed to do. But when I could do 90 MPH in 1st gear and still not hit the rev-limiter, there was no legitimate reason for me to shift that bike. I'd ride around at 30-40 MPH and say to myself...well, I guess I could shift now. I shifted more for the nostalgia of shifting a motorcycle, than for any pressing need. It was an awesome bike. I'm just not into high speed.

Goodness, that was 14 years ago and I still use that jacket when I ride the dirt bike.

I really rate the 650 Versys, I think it looks great and has great ability. Unfortunately for my needs, it needs more HP. Now, if it was, say, a 900 or a 1000 twin........

My FJ was/is like that. There were times that I caught myself thinking that it wasn't very fast anymore. . . . that's when I knew that it was time to put it in the garage for awhile. And, you're right, the Tenere never skips a beat. . . . whatever you want.

That something to be proud of. Not everyone can say that.

I understand. I think this points out to me how decent quality gear holds up for a very, very long time. That's just some Joe Rocket jacket I bought used from the guy who sold me the FZ1. I don't think it shows any additional wear today. I'm not sure I've ever worn out a good piece of gear.

Had you considered trying the Triumph GT Pro?

I wonder if the road oriented suspension and 19" front wheel would be more to your liking.

The buzziness you mentioned will still be there but maybe the better road handling(?) would help to sublimate your feeling about the buzziness.

I briefly considered it, but ruled it out. Unfortunately it wasn't an attitude about not liking the vibration. I couldn't hold the bars for more than 5 or 6 minutes without having to shake out my hands to get the feeling back. I believe my lifelong riding style of preferring generally higher RPMs makes me a bad prospect for this particular Trimuph engine.

No, Chris...I'm not changing the gearing on it.

I get it. Dialing in a bike for different riding conditions is not a consideration to most. ;)

I guess timing is everything. My local KTM dealer (Motomember in Purcellville, VA) decided today they are ready to clear their supply of 2020 Super Adventure S bikes. $13,882 will take home one of their 5...make that 4 remaining SAS models. I figure even if it turns out to be a mistake, at that price, how bad could it be?

When the GM first sent me the price, I thought it must be a deal he was giving me due to our long relationship. Nope, it's for anyone that wants the S. Not bad for a bike with a MSRP of $18,599.

Not sure when I'll pick it up, but I told them I'll take one in orange.

Probably the cheap price, it’s because in the S model, the engine is manufactured by Loncin:):)

Had my eye on the S but there isn’t a KTM dealer within 2 hrs that I trust.
It is awfully tempting though.

My first experience with this dealer, but I've known the GM for nearly 10 years. He sold me all 4 of my Teneres, as well as 3 other bikes/utvs. If he's involved, I'm not worried about the dealership in any way.

Dulles airport is not far away. Fly and ride would be easy.

Congrats. KTM bikes are performance oriented. I have owned and raced many. The bikes never held me back, only my skillset:). The KTM 1090R is what speaks to me. I am too close to retirement to aquire more debt. Perhaps in a couple years some reasonably priced ones will show up. I think you will really like that bike. Especially the roll on power wheelies!
