Hello,

Here are a few pictures to get started. Ive had a fascination with the Yamaha World Crosser skid plate. After looking at the bike and studying the Yamaha unit I can see where maybe some of there thoughts where other than looking cool. My thoughts where to have that type look and I have learned several things along the way. My main goal was to have some great protection under & front cases / water pump / O2 sensor / Etc. The bottom is so vulnerable to damage. After doing home work on all the aftermarket production plates, they all rely on the engine case as a support for there skid plate units in some fashion or another. I DIDNT, so mine does not, it only is attached to the frame. It does not connect to the engine. The bottom and the front of the plate is 1/4" 6061 all TIG welded. When its done most of the inside seams will be welded along with the outer. Its not done yet but I will continue to add pictures till its out with it beauty shots..... Then I can go play and not have a heart attack playing in the rocks.. Thanks for looking............. ::26::

Wow, wicked looking.

Do you really think relying on the engine case for support is such a big deal?

WOW! 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Looking forward to the field trials.

Will this be ready for next years Tenere Tragics event in Australia?

I can guarantee they will test it real good >:D

There is a man called Craig Hartley who does really thorough testing of the big Tenere..

Cheers
Graham

I think for the average rider it would be fine. Even if someone ran down a dirt road and did some exploring it would be fine with one of the nice after market units. In my case I have drug the case twice already and its a month old. I bought this bike to go to Alaska, Mexico (some day after the drug lords) and South America. I can see myself encountering some sketchy "dirt roads" along the way. Also IMOP water crossing could be the most dangerous. Because the water might not be that deep but you might not be able to see the bottom because of the current. Assuming you have already checked the depth. "Someone" could cross and the bike could slip off of slippery rocks and hit the skid plate. If 575Lbs hit the right place on the mounts on the bottom of the case it will pop a hole or crack the case... This might be a long shot but if im 200 miles away from a high-way out in the boon-docks of the US / Mexico / South America / Alaska I dont want any chance of of a cracked case. IMOP, the case mount not a good long term protection. Also the O2 sensor and water pump could be taken out with a rock no problem if your blasting down a rock strewn road... Shoot, it only takes one...... :D

Ive got a great idea on a more production affordiable frame on frame skid plate I will start working on when this is done..... Should be cool and strong !

It just keeps getting better.

Well thought out, nicely engineered, solid construction and it just looks bitchen ::012::

I'm sure it would be more expensive then whats out now from the other's but I for one would start saving today to get one these.

If you want the good stuff some times you have to pay for it!

Well done man.

Great looking skid plate!
Make it and there will surely be buyers.
All other plates using the case as a potential impact point are really worthless.

That looks awesome. I'll probably get the Alt Rider one in the mean time, but would be very interested in yours. I figure something/ anything is better than the factory one.

Tabasco - I totally agree with you on the concept of attaching skid/crash plates to the engine casings as being a BAD IDEA. ::007:: Installed one of the more expensive commercial units and was amazed at the attachement points and how they intend to save the motor from damage from a direct hit as we have already seen catastrophic results in other posts. ::005:: Granted, majority of the riders will never see the day when a properly designed skid plate will actually save the ride, so most of the skid plates being marketed today are falling into the "farkle" side of the equation.
However; with the geometry on the new generation of "frameless" bikes being the way they are - there is no feasble way for the commercial producers to comeup with a unit that has a pleasant appearance, is financially viable and still do a fair job at protecting the investment.
THat is where guys with great talent and a bulldog attitude like you come in - buck the system and come out with a really outstanding product with the primary objective in focus (protection) then asthetics secondary. ::012:: ::012:: ::012::

WHen you are ready to bring this to market - please keep me in mind for one unit ::008::

I already have a great idea on a more affordable *frame-to-frame* design.. I'm going to start working on it when im done with this one. The factory belly pan is just cast so the nature of the design is not robust enough for some... ::)

Looks awesome Jaxon. Any thoughts on the time to remove for an oil change?

There will be no need... You can change the oil and filter when its on.... (when its done)..... If I need to take it off it takes about five minutes to remove the bolts and 15-20 seconds to take it off..... :) The two drain holes are already in the bottom and I will add a hole in the front with a removable cover for the filter... ::008::
