Is anyone regularly hitting or breaking 200 miles or more per tank?

Mine seems to come on around 1.2ish gallons left.

I usually put about 4.8 gallons in the bike at around 210 miles.

I presume if the speedo is reading roughly 10% low then if the computer is using the same speed/distance in its usge calc it would be giving a figure on the low side

I calculate every tank on the bike and my truck in my head after fill ups.

Riding it down south 1500' elevation or less seemed like 42-43 was the expected-pretty consistent. maybe a little more or less depending on tank fill / wind / etc.
Riding in Colorado where I am now, I get 46-47 average. I am usually 7000' plus. Again, I have similar variances.

On my two day spin last week from my home to the Tenere gathering & back..here are my millage numbers (odo based):
46-47 mpg, 50 mpg (best ever), 50-51 mpg (new best ever), 47-48 mpg...that's 48-49 mpg on about a 700 mile loop or so
............ the two best tanks were hitting the highest passes. the very best tank was running the hardest in Sport mode.
Normally I ride rather tame and in touring mode...........enjoy the mpg!!! So go figure on that one tank LOL.

I always run with panniers (little givi 21l ones) I also am a 300 pound rider. Stock except taller windshield, KN air filter and synthetic oils.
I am very happy with my (all be it old lady riding style) mpg........ 45-47 (actual) were I am at

Those (odo based) numbers are NOT correct on my bike. I did a 1000+ miles, bounced my odo against my gps miles against google mapped miles.
The google and gps were within a handful of miles of each other while the odo was almost 50 miles less (as I recall) not near as far off as my speedo but still way short of actual.
(note replaced tires at end of run)
I think my speedo is (seems to be) 7-9% off depending on tires i reckon. I think my odo is 4% or 5% off again based on tires i reckon.

writting from Turkey .... I am living in istanbul and I have just back from 2200 km journey to mediterranean side of Turkey my trip was mostly in highway no pillion and full with luggage. I am amazed with the fuel economy... during the trip I have rarely exceed the 120 kmh speed and used the touring mode on. I can say the effect of smooth throttle over fuel economy is remarkable. low fuel warning start to flash after 430 km I have known I can go atleast 60 km more ( with in the city ) with the fuel warning on. this means the rage is something like 480- 500 km which is amazing. In the city ( istanbul) I was very rude to throttle and I have only achieved 330 km with in the city.
now I consider to have a yamaha xmax for the city since I realized that tenere is the best option for the long trips.

I do all the time. Hit about 220 before the low fuel light comes on BUT... I put the bike on its center stand and fill the tank all the way to the metal hole thingy that the gas pump goes through.
Put it on the center stand and you can get more fuel in. Then do that cool rocking thing and just drive off, or stall and fall over and look like a tard...

Anybody that can go 200-220 miles on a *TANK* with a Super Tenere, much less going that far before having the gauge start flashing, must be awfully, awfully gentle and sedate on the twistgrip. My S-10 is way too much fun to ride it with that kind of restraint and softness... ::001::

I'm *LUCKY* if I can get to 150-160 miles before having the gauge blinking and doing the count. Once the the gauge starts its flashing and the count I can go right around 40 miles safely before pushing the chance of running out. 45 if I'm very gentle. I pretty much look at going anywhere from 160 to 180 miles on a *TANK* in my normal riding conditions, etc.

As has been noted previously, my bike is stock other than an ECUnleashed re-flash. Stock headers, stock muffler, stock air filter, stock spec spark plugs, etc. Had the ECUnleashed Gen 1 flash and it pretty much got the same mileage as the bike did stock. I am happy to say I now have the ECUnleashed Gen 2 re-flash now and it appears to actually get slightly (2 or 3%) better fuel mileage if ridden gingerly. However, with the way the Gen 2 flash makes the bike run through the rev range it's even harder now to ride it gingerly... ::025::

I honestly can't imagine getting 45-50 MPG out of my Tenere. I wouldn't want to be riding it that slowly! It's too much fun to ride fast! :D

I love this board. I don't know if it really takes a village.

But I do know that a village makes things far more interesting. ::013::

High speed & cross country, i'll be typically in the low 40s & maybe high 30s. Definitely uses more off road - duh.

But smoothly commuting on mostly 50-60 mph roads (ahem posted a bit less )?

Sometimes I ue a hammer to make small taps and sometimes for brute force. This bike's a tool, too.

I can quite easily, but it involves riding on narrow back lanes, when there isn't room to get past an oncoming car and you cannot see around the next bend, self preservation instincts have you backing off a bit when you consider who is going to win in a 100mph combined speed head on with an S10 Vs a Tractor, so these roads see my MPG soar, as does following the Mrs who has only just passed her test, she tends to cruise below 70mph on back roads and her WeeStrom does not haul out of bends that quick so the S10 gets a really easy time - and can top 55mpg quite easily (64 being my record)

Cruising at 80+ and using plenty of the Gen2 flashes mid range soon brings me back into the mid-upper 40's, and if I reset the mpg counter and have a quick blat on a fast twisty stretch it can be brought into the 30's, but as my use tends to be very mixed it is rare I tend to get past 160 before the light comes on, and only get 17-18L in at this point suggesting another 50 miles should be attainable at a reasonable pace.

A couple weeks back, The Missus and I finished a 3200-mile trip to Michigan (and back, obviously). The Sten consumed 71.123 gallons travelling 3200.7 miles, for an average of 45.0 MPG. That means I could (theoretically) get 270 miles on a tank.** The worst mileage I recorded on the trip was 38.8 MPG and the best was 50.4. The MPG display was "optimistic" by 3%, typically reporting about 1.5 MPG high. The other thing I noticed is that the Sten would start flashing "reserve" when there was about 1.2 gallons remaining, not the 1.0 gallons as indicated in the user's manual.

For the record, The Missus' Wee-Strom averaged 52.7 MPG on the same trip, with a high of 61.1.

'tsall I can add...

TCM

** In reference to Dallara's post above, I do indeed take it easy on the throttle. I got all that throttle craziness out of my system with the K1200 and the TL1000! (Well, OK, I've been taking it easy on the Sten since the ring-seating violence I subjected the engine to during the break-in period, which worked wonderfully, I should add.)

205.5 miles on 5 gallons (41.1 mpg) today. This is with "mixed" highway and local riding and mixed Sport and Touring EFI modes.
The fuel gauge started flashing at about 180 miles.

As well as this being massively influenced by how people ride, it also has a lot to do with where they ride, how they fill the bike and what they perceive as empty.

I can easily drop mine into low 40's (UK Gallons) or to keep things consistent lets call it less than 10 miles per litre, but even at 9 miles per litre (40 UK mpg / 34 US mpg) the 23L tank in theory would give 189 miles.

Fast cruises (90mph) loaded with boxes also knocks my MPG right down and is probably worst for tank range as I can get through a tankful without slowing on long trips away, this can bring the warning on at about 160 - 170 miles - but assuming you can run the tank completely dry there is still another 50 left.

Running around slow narrow back lanes where it is hard to get up much speed, or riding fairly gently (like as if you are taking the UK IAM test) easily gets me up to 12 miles per litre - in theory @275 miles.

At home most my riding is a mix of roads and riding "styles" and the bike seems to be consistent at 170 - 180 miles until the warning comes on (notably about 10 more miles to the tank since the ECU flash) with an assumed 40-50 miles left. Abroad it is more varied with long fast motorway runs giving poorer range, and whole days on Alpine passes rarely bringing the light on, typically I fill up before the light but I did once get past 200 miles without the light coming on whilst riding slow passes.

I have often ridden with guys who insist their bikes will only do 80,90 or 100 miles to a tank - on bikes with 14-20L tanks, often the put the nozzle right down into the tank and their "fill" is about 3-4L short of a full tank, and / or they crap themselves as soon as the fuel warning comes on - when the bike still has 4L+ left and could easily manage another 40-50 miles before stopping. The combination of a 4L short fill and an insistence they fill up within 5 miles of the light coming on means they are missing out on about 8L worth of miles (or about 50% of what the bike is capable off)

A mate of mine has an Explorer and reckoned it would not manage 150 miles on a tank despite it using fuel at a similar rate to my S10, I got him to put a can of fuel in his top box and keep going until it stopped - he bottled out about 30 miles into the fuel warning, but had done over 170 miles (and probably still had another 20 miles left in there)

I reckon most people could get 200 miles from the S10 if filling right up and if prepared to run the bike quite low, I personally do not worry about fuel when near home, when the light comes on I have plenty of time to find somewhere to top up. In the more remote parts of Europe I will top up more often as the range on the warning could be drained without seeing a fuel station and nothing is more annoying than having to ride miles out of your way desperately searching for fuel.

What is nice is the bike will easily do a full days riding in "the mountains" where I typically ride 150-200 miles, I think Yamaha got the tank size about right.

I have a daily commute that sees me in the 50-60mpg range because it only averages 50mph on a flat road lined with law enforcement. On the local freeways, where 80mph and up is more common, the mileage can dive into the mid to high 30's. So, if the tank is mostly local commuting I'll see the gauge flashing around 220-230 miles. On the highway, as low as 150, and once 112 during a triple digit run.

In my past 1,400 mile of highway and twisties a week ago in SO Oregon/NOR CAL, I averaged 44mpg. Never took more than 4.5 gallons on at fuel stops; saw >200 once I knew where the gas stations were. [Ppremium 91+ octane, some w/10% Ethanol]

2012, 9,000 miles, stock bike, fully loaded OEM panniers & duffle, 100% synthetic motor oil.

P.S. Last fill, 220+ miles, 5.5 gal (42mpg)

The majority of our riding is two-up with luggage which obviously has an impact on range, my one issue with the S10 even though we have an expanded tank.

On the GSA we usually get 250-300 miles out of a tank dependent on conditions, on the Tenere we're pretty much done at 240 (I haven't run it completely dry yet but will check that). During normal riding that's not a significant issue but during rallies or long distance it is. We're going to try the Tenere on the IBA European Tour in September to see just how much of an issue it is before deciding whether to take it or the GSA to the US next year.

I've found the computer's range display on the GSA to be very accurate which helps a lot. We only picked up the new S10 yesterday so I don't know how accurate that one is yet.

Jus t this past weekend while riding from Escalante, Ut up Hwy 12 to Torre and then over to 25 & 72 up to Interstate 70. Jumped on the Interstate and thought there would be gas??? No stations till we got into Green River.

I was at 220 and the last 10 miles on low fuel. Filled with just 4.7 gall. That means I had at least another gallon to use or 45 more miles.

My bike has 30,000 miles stock tune with CJM, Yosh pipe.

Ridiing moderatly hard with hyw speeds of 75-80 I get 45mpg.

My Arse and Knees are done well before 240 miles

Typically I fancy a fair stop after a couple of hours, and even at 90mph it will go that long on a tank, so I tend to need to stop before low fuel stops play.

I take my hat off to anyone who can run 300 miles non-stop on a motorcycle, especially two-up, solo I can fidget a lot more and it is easy to stand up and stretch so maybe I could find a way to go for 3 hours - by which time the bladder would probably stop play anyway.

The reason nobody has even bothered to compete with the GSA range is most likely that research shows 99% of riders cannot ride that far and would rather have a more compact and lighter bike, personally I would choose 25L as the "best" size for the S10 tank just to give a fairly easy 200 to the warning with an easy 50 in reserve.

My 650 Strom will easily top 250 miles, not that I would ever do it on one go, but it is handy for commuting and I would guess BMW have sold a lot of GSA's not because people want to ride them around the world, but more likely because they want to be able to ride to work al week on a single tank.

I rode from Green River down 24 and then 12 this Saturday. I passed a lot of bikes but didn't recognize an S10. Utah 12 seems to attract fewer HD's and a larger % of sport oriented bikes than I normally see. Rode 1600 miles this Friday - Sunday. Average 45 mpg, worst was from Brigham City up to Idaho Falls at 80 mph. Maybe 36 mpg. My one real complaint on my S10 is how badly it drops off in fuel mileage above 4000 rpms.

We did Hyw 12, 25& 72 on Friday and was in Moab fri night. On Saturday ran the Lasalle loop and then headed back to Flagstaff. Got into flag around 3pm. Could not get a room so we had some grub and hung out till sunset then headed for home in Chandler.

Around town I get maybe 180 out of the tank before It goes to reserve. On the Hyw it is usually close to 200. And no I don't drive easy. Just SMOOTH ::001::
