After realizing I may only very occasionally leave pavement with my S10, and even then only to travel gravel or dirt roads, I picked up an OEM skidplate and put it on today.

I have to love OEM parts - uses existing bolts/fasteners and went on in about 10 minutes.

Plate itself is of decent thickness, the manner in which it is mounted could not survive a hard bash I don't think. I think it will work okay for what I need, though - keep stray rocks and such from dinging things up.

I saw Nick Sanders' Incredible Ride blue S10 only had the OEM bashplate on it.....and I thought "yeah it will be good enough for me then"

The OEM plate is OK as a gravel guard if you never hit the curb of the street or go off road. But be aware that we've had at least three owners with this skid plate who have put a hole in their sump and lost all oil. The skid plate brackets bent, allowing the plate to push the boss on the sump pan until it broke through the pan. Here's an example on something that was not much of an off-road experience to think of as threatening to a skid plate:
They were lucky to have enough JBWeld (or similar) in the group to get home:

This is one from the Colorado rally. I believe even with the Altrider skid plate there is a good chance you can blow a hole in the pan if you hit it hard enough. I went ahead and cut that lug off on my bike.

Geez. Are there skid plates made by a company that mount to the frame only? Maybe thats the only way to avoid that kind of issue - short of never bashing on rocks or ruts I suppose.
