Picked up the bike today. Had a nice 97 mile ride home. Had a few problems shifting into 3rd and 5th. The throw to 3rd seems very long. Hopefully some lube will help along with some linkage adjustment. Worried a bit about this and glad I have warranty until March 2017. Love the motor. Great torque. Will have to do some ergonomic work to make the bike more comfortable. All in all very happy.
Has only 2700 miles on her. These things come wound tight. Yours is about 50% loosened up if it's like most. Suspension and motor both smooth out.

Haven't heard of shifting issues other than the lever pivot needing a good cleaning and some lube. Do that right away and see if it solves the problem. One allen bolt right through the center of the pivot. Make sure you catch the thin washer behind the lever.

If it's never been removed before, that allen bolt has a healthy dose of blue loctite.

It's no slick shifting Suzuki, but it's far from clunky.

Thanks all for the replies. I will get the pivot bolt lubed and hope the shifting improves. I'm looking to install the following soon:

Denali single LEDs
Madstad bracket
Grip Puppies
Kaoko throttle lock

These are the items I will order first. If anyone has suggestions for better stuff and preferred vendors I sure would like to hear them. I'm not a rookie when it comes to motorcycles but farkling is new territory for me.

Thanks again.

Danno,

I have the Denali D2 on my bike. The dual intensity rocks, did have some issues with the wiring (twisted throttle took care of it, good guys).
I bought a set of the Rigid D2 for my car (i think they are the 6 led's) my god what light they put out, but I would not recommend them for the Tenere, unless you install them off the crash bars. The Denali's mount up nicely underneath the stock headlights. If you check my blog I have some shots of the Denali's mounted (http://thetenerist.wordpress.com/2012/12/24/2/
Nothing bad about the maddstad, I have the australian one from Greg, not as handy but works well enough.

happy hunting

I just bought my 2012 Tenere today... well tomorrow really because I pick it up tomorrow but I have an interesting story that fits this thread well. I've been wanting to get an S10 for about 6 months now and I'm on this forum every day, previously wanted a GS1200 real bad until I found the S10! I had a 2003 Harley that I've been trying to sell and promised myself I wouldn't pull the trigger on it until the HD was sold. Almost a month ago I finally got it sold and have been dying to purchase the bike. I've been back and forth with my wife, can I get it, do you care, etc... Last night, we had a conversation about it and she said... you know, this is a lot of money but you could either get the bike now or we can go back and forth for a year and you'll get one anyway. So, today I made the call and tomorrow I pick it up!

It's a 2012 demo and the best part... it has only 10 miles and 7 were put on by me. I feel like I'm stealing this bike ::012::

Great story!
And great wife.
I hope you enjoy your new Super Tenere as much as I do mine. Most enjoyable 20,000 miles I have had sitting on a bike. And that's saying something, I promise.

Cheers!

Congratulations dclement! Your wife has good common sense. My wife has gotten over it and now I don't have to make the dog taste my food before I eat it anymore ::006:: I'm enjoying my bike now. The shifting problem was solved by lubrication of the pivot bolt. You might want to check that on your bike too. Mine only had 2700 miles on it when I purchased and the pivot bolt was pretty dry. You live in a beautiful area for riding. I spent two months in Belle Forche installing radar systems. Thankfully it was in the summer.

Welcome Danno,

I'm 6'5" and I know what you mean about having the right bike to fit you. I love my Tenere.

I had the same problem with my shifter, I lubed it up with grease and it made a world of difference, glad to hear you had the same results.

As far as ergo farkles go I'd highly recommend you get about 3"+ of rise and some different bars with a straighter bend. I have 2" rox risers and ATV High bend bars on my bike and it makes it so you can actually stand and ride the bike without having to bend over very far for tall guys like us. With this combo you'll need longer lines but you can order them from Jaxon at ADVRider.com no problem. I would Highly recommend this set up.

Hi Tallgears. Thanks for the information. I'm planning on getting the Rox risers and extended lines from Jaxon. I put a Madstad bracket on but have yet to find the sweet spot. Im getting lots of wind noise. I did a 248 mile ride today and it wasn't bad but I'm sure it could be better for my old fart body. My two buddies on their Victory's seemed to be quite comfortable.

You might want to check out the V-stream touring windshield. Very nice!

Yea, for the taller guys (and I'm only 6'1") that sit up straight, the OEM shield just can't be located in any spot good enough to create a calm cockpit.

I started with the fancy brackets that allows various adjustments.

Finally got a tall shield. Big one.

That's all it took. Even sold the fancy bracket. Just needed more shield.

My bike came with the MRA Vario windscreen and with it fully extended and all the way up with the bracket I still get quite a bit of noise. Not to mention it seems to affect the handling and it looks bad. Snakebitten what windscreen did you end up with? My two buddies are trying to convince me that I need to trade the ST in on a Victory. They bought their bikes before I bought mine and I passed on the Victory because I just didn't think I could get used to the seating position. But now I wonder........

Noise is a different issue than buffeting. Sorry, I was actually addressing the wind management issues. But even with no buffeting, your helmet can make a big difference in noise.

Anyways, I have the Cal Sci Large. Based on my torso size on their website. It's pretty big and tall.

Regardless, I'm more moved by your consideration of a Victory vs the Tenere. That's 2 different missions. Very different. If your buddies are giving YOU the jazz, rather than complaining that you are leaving them in the dust, literally, and having more fun than them, well..........the Tenere is underserving you.

But try a few screens out first. Go bigger than you think even. But the big ones do catch more gusts. So handling isn't unaffected.

Danno, I use the Parabellum tall windscreen. The tallest one they have for the Tenere. Creates a nice pocket that is buffet free and alot quieter than the stock or shorter windscreens. I'm 6'1" and it works great for me. Also I believe the 26" Cee Baily's would be a great fitment for lowered noise and buffeting. Some call it a barn door but I don't care it does what I am looking for and that's what most important. I have alot of cruiser friends that looked at me sideways when I traded my vulcan Voyager 1700 for the Tenere too. One of them actually went and bought a V strom so he could keep up and the others look longingly at the Tenere when it is effortlessly carving up twisties or taking that gravel detour you always wondered about. Also, watching them unfold and struggle to get the feeling back in their butts after a 100 or so mile clip in that clamshell seating position makes me even more comfortable with my decision. I can stay on the Tenere far longer than i could on that voyager without any fatigue. The Tenere can do anything that a Victory can do and more, but the Victory can only wish to do things that the Tenere can do. I have no regets on my decision because I can now ride anywhere I choose. Cruisers are cool but are limited in their usefulness. These bike require some tweaking to get them to ride like you want, but then again Ive never had one of any style that didn't. I hope you find the right things to make yours fit you as well. Good luck!

Just my opinion

Steve

Thank you for the great replies. I haven't given up on the ST by a long shot. I will do whatever it takes to get it to work for me. I really enjoy this bike and the engine is fantastic. However, the guys on the Victory's are having no problem keeping up with me when it comes to acceleration. Corners are another story and I see them being a bit tentative going into them. I am no great motorcycle rider myself and I found myself being what I call sloppy while riding yesterday. Obviously I need to pay better attention to what I am doing. I wasn't dangerous but I wasn't elegant either. I do find myself wanting to get out and ride this bike. My KLR had 900 miles on it when sold 8 months ago. It took me over 2 years to put that 900 miles on the ODO. I already have over 550 miles on the ST in the last 3 weeks.

All comes clear to me now. 550 miles?

Keep riding. This thing becomes part of you between 3-6K. It shrinks. Gets lighter. Gets smoother.

It will always demand your respect, but it is a far different feel after you get to know it better.

Good luck. Ride.
