My last 3 bikes were broken in by just riding them. Always had good success. I recently found the motoman info and I plan to run through those cycles on the way home from my dealer. I'll take the scenic route home and be prepped for an oil change when I get there, somewhere between 50 and 100 Miles. After that I plan to just ride it. I never do sustained WOT runs, If I am playing maybe a 3 or 4 gear hard pull, then behave. My FJR has 44k miles and never missed a lick.

I had to put a new base gasket in my old FJ 1200 at around 35k Miles, the rings and bores were so nice, I buttoned it up with nothing but new gaskets. Sold it with 50k miles still running good and minimal oil consumption.

My experience has been as long as you avoid any sort of sustained anything, it will be OK.

Agree +1... The factory already "gets on them" and test the motor.. Just ride normal... be OK...

Oil Filters:
- Yamaha - 5GH-13440-20 (2.5")
- Yamaha - 3FV-13440-00 (3.25")
- Yamaha - 3FV-13440-10 (3.25") (both of these are earlier, slightly longer versions)

May be you can cross reference them.

part no. 5GH-13440-20, also fits the following bikes along with FZ6R:
YFZ-R1 (07); YFZ-R6 (06); FZ1-S (06); FZ1-N (06); FZ6-S (07); FZ6-N (07)
Thanks for that info, after looking up the YZF-R1 2007 found filter "EAOM-103" Ordered 2.

I have pretty good luck just by riding them.

When I was young my brand new FJ1100 was "checked" for top speed twice on the 12 mile ride home from the dealer. It then went on a 700 mile 2up weekend ride of mostly constant speed interstate. It still ran great with very little oil consumption for an air cooled motor when I sold it 18 years later with over 80K on it.

I bought my ST1300 in Mississippi and rode 620 miles home the day I bought. 100 miles of back roads to Memphis and then 500 miles of Interstate with the speedo reading between 75 and 85 the rest of the way home. I changed the oil when I got home. At 90K miles it has zero oil consumption between 5K mile change intervals and has not had any valve shims changed yet.

My experience is that if the engine is built right, as long as the bike isn't completely tortured, it probably doesn't matter a whole lot how you break it in.

On pickup day I'll go 80 miles to pickup the bike in WV. Then spend 200-300 miles riding back home on some of my favorite West Virginia roads. I'll follow the book recommendations. If that's how Yamaha wants it done, then I know it's at least a good way to do it. I don't like guessing on what is safe for the bike. Sure I won't be able to ride those roads at my normal pace, but I wouldn't push to my pace on a completely different bike, anyway.

I wonder how he does that with Linked brakes. he's gotta be using a lot of front brake to do that, must be disconnected or something. ???

He is hitting the rear brake first which over rides the link.

He only had one day left on his factory warranty and wanted to be sure it was going to last.

I usually do an Iron Butt ride for my break in. I have a 1043 mile ride around Wisconsin that takes 14 hours on all secondary roads going through small towns. So you are varing your speed and not exceeeding RPM limits.

I have 575 miles, just changed oil/filter and FD oil. Pretty simple deal. Oil looked like I could use it again, should have saved it to put in the lawnmower.

Have done some spurts up to 5k, but mostly varying the speeds and staying under 3900 rpm. GPS says 196 miles, trip #1 says 200, hmmm. First tank got 49.5 mpg. E started flashing about 217 miles, refueled at 236 miles, took 4.75 gallons. The AVE mpg can be reset at any time, but I had not since new, showed 50.x mpg. Pretty impressive considering I was not trying to get good mileage.

I did not get the Owners Manual so I am missing some of the references. Won't get the manual until Tuesday. By then I should have completed the 100 and 600 mile oil changes. What does the manual say about the Final Drive (FD) oil change? What type and weight oil is used in the FD? Am I correct thinking the engine uses 3.28 quarts (3100 ml) of oil? Thanks for the needed info.
