I figure the engineers who built the bike know best

Ride forty miles from Longview, Texas to Tyler, Texas. Change the oil at my buddy's place, have some awesome Texas brisket, a few adult beverages that evening and head out in the morning for the 800 or so miles to Colorado.

Quoted from some of my earlier posts:

Break in is all about ring seating, oil changing to remove metal and gasket particles, and heat cycles. A properly done "hard" break in is NOT and abusive break in.

I do not go by the manual because corporate lawyers override the wisdom of engineers for two reasons.
Reason 1: If somebody goes down/gets hurt "riding like they stole it" to break it in hard because the manual says to the company gets sued.
Reason 2: The company does not want to pay for warranty repairs because some idiot interpreted hard break in as red line it until the engine blows.

No better way for me to break my bike in than commuting to work. 30 miles of stop and go with a short freeway run. Biggest thing to avoid is constant engine speeds.

I’ll be following the owner’s manual. No one’s let me down yet. ;)

heat cycles, oil changes--non synth--

about 3-4 heat cycles and it should be good for a lifetime.

synth after the 4th heat cycle - prolly Mobil1 15-50

It really depends upon when the bike shows up. I've got a short (1200 mile) trip planned with friends Aug 12th - Aug 14th. I'd like to have the break-in done before the trip. When I bought the FJR my dealer told me, "Don't be a jackass, but ride it like you normally would." I tried to baby my DL but couldn't restrain myself.

Of course, my bike might not show up until the end of the month so who knows... ::)

I prefer the Castrol Racing 4T full synth. I know it's expensive and possible overkill, but my bikes shift so nicely after an oil change.

Gunna ride the heck out of it then change the blinker fluid and check the exhaust bearings ! :D

Then check the 'shop builders' work and then put full SYN in the whole bike....

I normally run Mobil 1 or Amsoil in the motor.... and Mobil 1 in the rear end,,, Run Mobil or Yamaha filter... I tend to change the oil more than is required in the first 5000 or so to get all the fine crap out of the new motor... just over kill BS prolly, but makes me feel better about it...... :D

gonna pick up from my dealer in Wild West Virginia, take the backroads for 50 miles or so (lots of speed variation), have a long stop, possibly somewhere scenic for a photo shoot (let the bike cool for a bit) then continue to a mates place not far from Blue Ridge, change all oils there (say 100 miles), then get back into the back roads of WV for another 500 over the next two days, riding moderately hard, keeping the revs up but not way up, and not letting it lug. A few long stops for cooling cycles. Some dirt roads, just cos I can't wait. Then home for another oil change. Another couple of days riding the following weekend and break-in will be done.

The manual is a bit vague, "avoid prolonged operation above 3900 r/min -0 - 1000km(0-600 mi) "avoid prolonged full-throttle operation" "do not put an excessive load on it".

sounds like some full throttle but not too much for not to long  - most of the time below or around 3900 r/min at first.

1000 - 1600 km (600-1000 mi) "avoid prolonged operation above 4700 r/min"

sounds like above but with a around or below of 4700 r/min.

3900 in 6th gear is a nice cruising speed of 125kph - enough to get a ticket around these parts. pretty easy to still have fun even with these restrictions. I had a nice short un-prolonged rip up to 180kph in sport mode today, then settled right back down to the 3900 range

My dealership is an easy shot from some great Sierra foothills scenic byways. I plan on making full use of all the gears, all the rpm's, scuff the tires in good, then be back at the dealer later 'that day' for a quick lubricant change. Say a couple hundred miles max. Next change prolly a little short, then 'normal' from there.
Man, this waiting shit sucks big time!

Relatively close to what it states in the manual. It's worked on every new bike I have owned over the years. No need to change now...

YMMV

I will be using Mobil 1 MX4T 10W-40 due to reading this link http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=1912.0

I also will be trying to get my hands on the new filter from Amsoil which I have for the Ducs. http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/eao.aspx
Not listed on their site, but they do have the ones for the Ducati, will contact them to see if they make one for the Super T as soon as I find out what it takes.
From Dallara's post

http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=1326.msg22581#msg22581

Oil Filters:
- Yamaha - 5GH-13440-20 (2.5")
- Yamaha - 3FV-13440-00 (3.25")
- Yamaha - 3FV-13440-10 (3.25") (both of these are earlier, slightly longer versions)

May be you can cross reference them.

part no. 5GH-13440-20, also fits the following bikes along with FZ6R:
YFZ-R1 (07); YFZ-R6 (06); FZ1-S (06); FZ1-N (06); FZ6-S (07); FZ6-N (07)
