Have any of you taken apart that left cowl panel yet? HA, while Yamaha did a nice job on the right, I can't belive the same people designed the left side. I would hate to get into it on the road. Reminds me of my DL with 17 different sized bolts and those pesky little plastic rivets, the ones I lose in deep dark places. Painting my panels and had to remove the left, now if I can remember how it goes back together...

::026:: I kinda thought they would use the same speed clips as well on the right. Guess we're going to have to order them

I thought it was easy. The upper and lower remain together as a unit and there's, what, 5 screws that are all the same size plus the two plastic clips. Took all of two minutes to remove and the same to install.

I had a little trouble with that side the first time. It’s one of those things though where once I do it, I’ve got it down pat.

I was trying to separate the black painted glossy panel from the flat black plastic panel, then you have the small panel that covers the bottom of the radiator. It's 4 sections as compared to one. I was spoiled by the quick and fancy right side.

Took both sides off to balance the TBs. The DL1000 was a good teacher.

The negative was getting all the fasteners to align on the left side. Don't tighten the fasteners until all the fasteners are started.

Always carry a couple spare plastic and a couple spare metal fasteners. They do not weight much.

I do like the plastic washers on all the metal fasteners.

I have not removed the front plastic though will do when adding the display thumb controller. Can't believe they used Philips fasteners in a tight space. Hex Hex Hex!

Haha! I'm glad this thread is already here. The LH panel isn't bad once you find out how everthing is fastened, but I'm not a big fan of those pop-in plastic fasteners. The ideal approach to those is to not to re-use them because they will wear out pretty quickly. I suppose keeping a bag of spares around would be good headwork. I just think Yamaha could have done better than that. I envision that type of fastener for things like interior panels on cars, so it kinda suprised me to see them on a bike.

Those plastic fasteners are all over the dl front fairings. They seem to work pretty well. Push in the center to release. Once they're removed, push the center out, reinsert them and lock int place by pushing the centers flush. If you don't force them, you can reuse them over and over again.

Yeah, I figued them out pretty quickly. In don't doubt that you can use them over and over, but in most circles the 'recommendation' is to replace them often if you are unfastening them often...as a preventive measure.

After taking the RH panel loose, I somehow expected the left side be just as quick...no such luck :D

But the tool kit and accessory electrics are there under the right side, so you need access to it. The left side has to protect the radiator, so will by necessity be more robust.

I just put it all back together, and those little round pressure clips, those plastic rivets, those phillips head screws and 2 sizes of allen heads still make me say it sucks. I 'm done for now, and hope I don't have to take it off on the road cause I can tell you some of those pieces will be missing...

If you have the yamaha wind wing thingies, cut about 1" off the end and you will not have to mess with those phillips.
I'm not sure what pressure clips you are talking about. When I moved the side panel to raise the tank I kept it as one piece.

But I agree it is a pain anyway you look at it. ::025::

Only need a Phillips if you have the wind deflectors and there is only one size of allen + plus the two rivets.

You must be taking the two parts apart. If you take it off as a unit, it's 5 allen screws and two plastic rivets. Real simple.
::003::
I guess I should add, this is all I have had to do to access the hardware to lift the tank.

Same here. It's not a problem, but I still don't understand why Yamaha would go with metal screws on everything except those 2 front fasteners. There must be a reason for it, although it escapes me...no big deal though.

I was grateful for how easy it was to remove the panels. If you're ever feeling masochistic, find an old Honda 1100XX and service that. Not fun.
