Yeah this motor as it's own peculiarities - nothing to worry about though, I think we are all hearing/feeling the same things. To be honest I prefer the sound/feel of my Vee at higher revs, but the S10 is WAY better at the low end. Never mind, that's what earplugs are for - so you can't hear the clatter from the engine.

If it really bugs you get a loud pipe to drown out the engine noise!
+1, This is a big bore twin with a 270 degree firing order! Much quieter than any of the big singles I've ridden.

I tried making some videos today, had camera mounted on handlebar behind screen. It captured lots of noise that I don't normally hear.

I noticed the big growl around 3300 rpm first when I picked the bike up and had to get on it pretty good to merge with I-20 traffic. I believe that is coming from the counterbalancer setup.

It does have some distinct noises only found on the Super Tenere, I like.

Mine has a tapping sound that sounds like the cam chain rattling since the sound is half speed of the crank. I hear it real good on cold start up then it gets a little quieter as it warms but never goes away. I seem to hear it more with ear plugs ??? This is not a smooth sounding engine and to think I always thought Suzuki's were rattle traps. They ain't got nothing on this baby.

Also it sounds like my valve lash is really set on the loose end of the spec. Maybe that is how they make it to 24,000 on a valve adjustment.

coming from the concours C10, this bike is silent! yeah, I hear the engine sounds, but it is a cream puff compared to the C10, and I have the Wasp carbon muffler without the baffle! It is a nice change for me. Quieter, smoother engine with a taller 6th gear. Vibration and noise are pretty much non existent for me.
I will have to concur. For a dry sump motor it sounds good to me. The more I ride it the more I like it. This is a fun ride with a great motor mated to a fantastic tranny. Road maners are top notch 8) :)

I definitely noticed some harmonic vibration when accelerating or climbing a hill in the, roughly, 3000-4000 rpm range. Not exceeding 3900 rpm much yet, at about 230 miles on the bike so far (not bad for 27 hours of ownership. Hey, I had to look it over and read the manual too, you know). Was hoping it was mostly due to keeping the rpms down (choice of gear too high). This is more of a vibration than a noise. Possibly even sub-sonic, or near to that. Also have some buffeting off the the windscreen. Started ducking my head into the cockpit to attempt to distinguish and I think it's mostly a wind management issue, although the bike vibration is plainly present as well. Decided to go after wind management first, and consider the vibration after that is solved, and more miles on the bike.

OBTW, this is a great bike. I'm loving it more with each mile, despite a few niggles. Likely the RT will be for sale soon. :)

I come from the KLR world where noise is always present. Also had a DL1000 and learned a few things about their throttle bodies being loose and not balanced, growl growl growl.
Noticed noises I have never heard before but this is a dry sump engine. Thought I heard valve lash or fuel pump tick. Thought I heard the clutch like it was a dry clutch. Rattles at startup like there are loose parts in and out. Vibrations at different times. Surely these will things are not resolved by one fix though will be resolved as we discover where they come from.
What would be nice to see is someone that takes say a 3,000 mile Super Tenere, adjusts the valves, balances the fuel system, installs a PC V and maybe a new exhaust, and checks the torque on every nut, bolt and screw. Chances are they would have a better running but still noisy Super Tenere that they will enjoy very much.

It gets way better after break-in. I am at 1200 miles right now and it has smoothed out a lot. Give it some time.

+1 on the more miles helps. I am over 1600 1798 and this is a jewel of a ride. The 3k rpm vibes/roar I believe is the counter balance shaft. When new I thought the clutch was slipping when accelerating from the 3k rpm zone. Think someone mentioned that is is less when in TC2, which I keep forgetting to try and compare.

Ended up with a 140 mile ride this evening / night and finished with 1,670 miles. I decided to try the S mode and Wow! Very responsive, rarely feel the 3200 RPM growl. Seemed to be smoother but I will wait for other rides to conclude. Was wondering about the gas mileage and got a solid 46 MPG. The riding was freeway, easy twisty with elevation gain, twisty with a lot of elevation gain and loss, narrow bumpy twisty, twisty with a lot of elevation gain and loss, freeway. Gonna try it on other routes I have previously ridden in the T mode. Really like the responsiveness of the S mode.

At 2100 miles today, still a noisey beast on cold start, valve lash rattle, primary gear rattle, cam chain joining the fray, yikes I am starting to think I bought a Ducati ??? Once under way it sounds smooth even with earplugs I can still hear the rattling at idle. Bike idle is good so it just must be put together loose. Maybe that is how they achieve a 24k mile valve lash inspection. At least one or two of my valvess sound as if they have no shim at all under the cam bucket. :)) I have even had bystanders comment on how noisy the thing is on start up or at idle. I did hear a new R1 with the cross plane crank fire up the other day, it sounded as if it were about to come apart so maybe the new generation Yamaha's are not as smooth as the older ones. Verdict is still out and I will run mine until it explodes.

Just had 1500km on mine. It does still have the clocking noise at around 3100-3500 rpm when opening up smoothly but firmly.
However it's less than in the first km's...
I believe it's the crank but will continue to monitor it the coming km's. In September I will install the full line Arrow exhaust.

I hope to change the whining noise it makes below 4.5K rpm... ;-)

I have to agree that the engine seems very rough between 3000 and 3500 rpm in higher gears. As someone else stated, tractorish, and it's a good description. My two cylinder Briggs and Stratton riding lawnmower seems smoother. Mind you, I only have 400 miles on it so it may get somewhat better as the miles pile up. However I am starting to regret trying to combine the features of my FJR1300 and DL650 (both gone) in favour of one bike that sort of does it all. I also agree it's definitely on the noisy side.

Welcome to the Forum! How about an intro?

I'm like you and replaced my FJR and a KLR with the SuperT, but I'm 99.44% sure it is going to work out fine! The SuperT is a different animal and although it does not do as well what the FJR does best nor does it do as well what the KLR/DL does best - it will do it all well!!

Be glad you are coming from a DL650 and not a DL1000. The DL1000 will buck, snort, kick and then sometimes pull............

;)
My new S10 feels similar to my previously owned 2003 DL1000 with more refinement and 20% more HP + the ABS, stiffer chassis, better wind protection, traction control, etc. In other words, a much better hooligan bike. This bike has personality and all is good so far.

This motor feels SO much like my 1K "Strom I can't believe it. That roughness between 3500-4000 RPM which I hated on the Strom, I still hate on the S10. It just feels like you are doing the thing major harm if you are on the throttle with any authority at that point. I only have 1200km. on it so far so I sure hope it is going to smooth out some.

Yep, this thing sounds like a tractor, that nails it. I think back to what the ST sounded like, man that motor is so smooth compared to this. Even the DL 650 is very smooth and quiet compared to the parallel twin. Sounds like a bunch of bolts rattling in a can. I don 't recall it sounding anything like that when I demo'd it a year ago. The one I rode had about 2500 miles on it, so I am hoping for it to smooth out. I have not noticed too many flat spots in performance yet. The brakes and suspension are outstanding though.

Verdict is out on what? ::) You'll explode before it does. My cross plane crank R1 runs smooth and fast and sounds fantastic. You worry too much.

Welcome to the Forum!!!! Yes, have to agree on the similarities to the big Strom.

It is strange that when I test rode the Super Tenere some 18 months ago I came back saying naaa it's not for me. Too agricultural ... motor sounds as rough as a rough thing all kinds of strange noises coming from every element of the bike. Two months later I went and bought one ... don't even know why. Glad I did though it's a great bike and I'm now used to the odd noises it makes. That cross plane configuration is really quite something ... the rest ... well it's in the noise :) Love it to bits 8)
