Well was going to get my 2018 Tenere out yesterday for its first ride of 2023 but it wouldn’t start, tried boosting it with a jump pack still no start, it would occasionally fire but no start. Finally got it to start this afternoon. This was the first no start for my 2018. After I finally got it running I took it for a 25 mile ride and shut it off a few different times and it started normally again. Did a load test on the battery and it tests weak so guess I will be replacing it, might switch to a lithium battery if I can locate one for a decent price and a lot more cold cranking amps.

If it was up to me Yamaha would be forced to recall all the 1200 Tenere’s they ever sold and fix this crazy no start issue.

I would use a better trickle charger than that:
Only $11.00 more and made by NOCO:
Or the one I have been using for the last few years:

Not sure why I got notification to my email about your post. But I had similar problem and I got advice over here from one female writer. She suggest to clean the key with choke cleaner and then lubricated with the dry WD-40 after that it starts no problem. Meaning that was the problem with the immobilizer. I have this issue couple more times after that but every time I was able to fix it with the choke cleaner and WD-40. I sold my supercenter a couple of weeks ago and bought Africa twin so the problem solved completely :)

Re: Very hard starting today

One of the experienced Yamaha dealers in Germany (Yamaha Voiges) gave us a hint. To deair the motor, following procedure should help:

1. Turn ignition off
2. Press both blacks buttons in the cockpit, turn the ignition on and keep pressing both buttons for 8 seconds (the display will switch to diag mode). Now you can release the buttons.
3. Push booth buttons again for 3 seconds. The display will switch again.
4. Now give full throttle and let the starter turn for 4-5 seconds.
5. Release the throttle and turn the ignition off.
6. Turn the ignition on (display should be in normal mode) and the XT should start without any problems.

http://www.yamaha-voiges.de/images/stories/texte/starten.pdf

With this procedure, the full pump will be deactivated and no fuel will be injected during the deair of the pistons.

A much more simpler procedure is to use a key without transponder. If you start your XT with such a key, the starter will turn but the fuel pump is deactivatet by the ECU.
After reassembling my S10 from a thermostat change, the Hard Start error somehow was induced. I have previously cleared it up by simply starting bike with WOT but this time it would not do the trick. I found the above post and had to do several cycles of it but the bike finally started up and is running fine. Thanks to Rainer for posting this up years ago. Made my day. :)

This bike is unforgiving of anything less than a perfect battery. Even with a tender, I just assume I will need to replace it every 3 years. Sure enough, tried to start it this year on year 4, it spun but would not catch. New battery, it fired right away

This is a 52 page thread about Super Tenere hard start issues so it seems like a way to common issue.

My opinion Both the battery and the starter that Yamaha chose to use are simply not big enough for the job, my Goldwing is twenty years old the first battery was still starting the bike fine with over 200,000 miles on it but a load test said it was time to replace it so that’s what I did. My Goldwing now has 598,000 miles and the only time it ever failed to start was when I left the key in the accessories position overnight and temporarily killed the battery.

Yep, starter is too weak and draws too much current from the battery on the SuperT.
One thing one needs to keep in mind, when you go to start the Tenere, let the system come to life before cranking, including letting the fuel system prime up. This allows for the most amount of AMPs to be fed to the starter when the battery doesn't have to feed all the systems while cranking.
Makes a huge difference on startup.
Not doing so usually leads to a no start compounded by flooding and around and around we go.
We have sold a lot of batteries and spark plugs to Tenere owners that in the grand scheme did not, or may had not need them if they trained them self to let things wake up and prime up after letting their bike sit a while.

The last hard start I had was a few years ago. I was taking a trip around town and it started raining. I whip n the front of a hotel to let it blow over for 20 minutes. When I went to leave. It didn’t start. Embarrassing Couldn’t smell any gas like it was flooded. I let it sit for a few minutes and it fired right up. I then went home and turned the key on and off at least 10 times and it farted one time and fired right up. I even hit the starter while it was pumping up. Haven’t had one since with the same 14s battery. I normally let it cycle before hitting the starter. I never leave without my jumper pack.

I just noticed that my local Wal-mart store in Southwest Florida has this battery in stock! Same price $129.95
Thanks for mentioning that, I will be checking the local Walmart store tomorrow morning, my credit card gets me a 2-3% rebate from Walmart.

Well I put one in today. Cranks strong. Hope it’s like my old scooter, a Yamaha Vino. It had a lithium battery and was two stroke. Had it for 10 years stored it outside year round In Baltimore, never had it on a charger. That thing always started. Had the same battery when I sold it. Lowest maintenance bike/scooter I ever had.

Checked local Walmart today absolutely no lithium motorcycle batteries on the shelf, the battery book for looking up batteries doesn’t even list any kind of battery for the 1200 Tenere.
When I do order a new battery I’m hoping to also find something to attach to the battery posts to make it a little easier to hookup jumpers

I really like this place and the Scorpion Stinger battery.

I have a Noco jump pack and I have used it on this bike once before I changed the battery out. So it gripped the leads pretty good.

Amazon, had it the next day. Group 14 fits like a glove. That charger works great. It charged it up in little over an hour. Apparently lithiums charge faster.
Considering a NOCO NLP14 as my AGM YUASA YTZ14S is coming up on three years this Fall.
Would like to know any feedback you might have after running this NOCO batt for a few weeks and putting some miles on the clock.
Looks like you may have used one of the spacer plates, correct?
Do you currently run any electrical accessories on your bike?

Yep, A rigid high low beam light bar, gps, and I have full electric gear. Jacket pants and gloves. on rare occasions Electric socks.
Did you use a spacer plate?
It also appears that you used the regular type bolts to attach the wires at the terminals.
Were the NOCO supplied hex screws too short?
