Doh!! Painful to see my normal backyard from so far away!!! I'll be there in about three weeks Jim, so reserve some riding time!!!

Guys, if you have never ridden South Central WV be sure to make this event. ADV riding does NOT get much if any better than the resources to be had in a 2hr radius of the New River Gorge.

Those photos look like the "tour" trikepilot took me on a few weeks ago. It really is beautiful country, and a fantastic place to ride.

DD - I'll be back up there with the WRR Aug 8-13.... Round two? Maybe with less moisture this time?
Could be fun. But I'm pretty sure that's when we're leaving for the Tenere ride up north (Adirondacks/VT/NH/Canada). Appreciate the invite. That area of WV is probably may favorite. Although, it's hard to pick a favorite in WV. Such a great riding state.

Southern (Upper) New River National River

A temperate rain forest wetland.

I was riding in the Alleghany mist most all morning.

In WV, even the slab is easy on the eye.

WVDOH in this region has been on a mission to gravel all the back roads. It is an election year.:D It is like riding on ball bearings. The roads should be broken in for FODS.

Snowflake and me would soon ride through this pass.

This will cause someone grief someday.

Water table is a tad low for July. There will likely be a lot more rowdy flow mid-June next year.

I could sit here all day.

The same old train that brought me here will carry me away again. Ridin’ on that New River Train.

Good to see some coal running for a change. Folks are back to work; the crank is turning, slowly, but turning.

You will encounter some of these.

And lots of these. Caution! Slippery when wet!

When coal is running, it is a good idea to pay attention to the signs or your day may come to an abrupt halt. Shiny rails are a tell-tale sign that coal is running and that you should be paying attention at crossings. This track that leads to the new coal processing plant that sits in the shadows of the Beech Ridge wind farm as seen sitting idle in an earlier ride report. BLRFJR and me rode by a couple of the mine sites in that area recently and the coal trucks were running like honey bees working a hive.

FJR riders et al will have to endure twisties like these all day long.

Another spot I could linger a long while.

After last night’s rain, there is nothing like finishing on freshly graded clay gumbo! Riding on ball bearing gravel was suddenly looking pretty good.

I had promised - months ago - to post this video in another thread but grad school has had me by the short and curlies and I only now got around to editing it together today. :-[

Since it features some of the best ADV riding in the area where SpklBuk is hosting the FODS event, I thought I would post it here. Enjoy and make plans to ride WV next summer at this event or on your own - you will not regret it!!

This is a video of a ride I did in April with my buddy Gary on his 2012 KLR. It features a huge loop touching on all three major gorges in the area - the New, the Gauley, & the Meadow.

[smg id=1873 type=av align=center caption="New River Gorge - Big ADV ride Loop"]

And here's the screengrab for the overall loop to give you an idea of the ground you can cover in 121 miles with 12674 feet of elevation gain/loss. And the best part is that I was never any further than 17 miles (line of sight) from home!!!

Here is another from April that I only now found the time to edit. This is with Spklbuk and my buddy Gary on his KLR650

Make your plans to make the FODS ride. There is more than likely going to be a badass "big bike" ADV ride!!!!

Hope those vids help drive some interest to the FODS event for you. I have one more from my trip up there last week that I will hopefully edit soon and post - stay tuned.

I am leaning towards using some vacation time next summer so I can guarantee being up there. If that all goes as planned, count me in to lead a ride that we'll tentatively call "You took your Tenere where?" or "An ADV ride for the WLDB's."

I am struggling to place which Will you might be referring to?

Just do it!!

The Will in question is the carrot topped young climbing guide at the climb shop at Seneca Rocks.

As it is nearing the time when some must put in for time off from work, I thought a bump might be in order. Hope to see you there!

Still hopeful that I can swing this Jim - was just talking to DirtDad about the other day via email even!

Was just up there over the long Tday weekend and had the little bike with me which I thrashed mercilessly out in the Cotton Hill area along the New River near Kanawha Falls. I had a blast. Hope that winter is a little more merciful to the area this year.

Speciality spirits coming to FODS WV @ Pipestem in June near you...

Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company is now up and running! http://www.charlestondailymail.com/article/20140603/DM06/140609756 I'm thinking perhaps a short keg for the picnic (cleverly disguised so the park rangers can look the other way) would make a nice addition to the menu.

And for after hours by the fire...http://smoothambler.com/spirits/

Brewed or distilled and aged within sight of one another just north of Lewisburg.

Time to start thinking about reservations! See the first post for more info.
