Then I guess you will disappointed with having to do oil changes every 4000 miles ;)
Somewhat. But every bike requires oil changes. I am a bit disappointed that with almost 4 quarts on reserve we ONLY get 4k miles. My other bikes had ~6k mile intervals.

Changing the oil takes ~15 mins working diligently and can be done easily "on the road". Valve service? 12k miles happened way too quickly with the old bikes and always seemed to be at "the wrong time". I don't want to ADD maintenance and added costs down the road if I can spend a few extra bucks now to never have to worry about it. I specifically chose this bike because it REALLY DOES require the least maintenance of any comparable offerings.

In reality it looks like the Akrapovic DOES require repacking:
http://www.akrapovic.com/motorcycle-exhaust/products/yamaha/model/super-tenere-2010/slip-on-0306e07e9a/

Check out the schematic...it lists a repack kit.

If that is in fact the case, I will probably save the $200 and go for the Leo Vince and hope 94 dB isn't too loud compared to 88 dB. 10 dB is roughly twice as loud.

Re: Exhuast Opinions

Actually a 10db increase in sound pressure is almost a 10x increase (a 3db increase is roughly double), however the human ear perceives a 10db increase as roughly 'twice as loud'.

I like the little-bit more aggressive, throaty sound of the LeoVince. And users have reported not much of a change while at constant highway speeds....nothing worse than hours long droning of a too-loud exhaust. Reminds me a certain stupid kid who thought that expansion chambers on a RD400 were cool (and were) and preceded to go temporarily deaf on a 1500 mile trip......wonder who that was :D

I have 40% hearing loss in one ear from exposure to loud exhaust on my SV650 from a 12-hour day to Georgia.

I am NOT interested in any more.

OSHA says exposure to 94dB should be limited to ~4 hours MAX daily.

88dB does not appear to have a limit. The limit scale starts at 90 dB for 8 hours.

Are you running your Leo Vince with the quiet core in? I wish I could find someone local to hear some of these options in person.

Re: Exhuast Opinions

I have some hearing loss from jet-aircraft (and alot of shooting) and on & off tinnitus, so I always ride with earplugs.

I don't have the LeoVince yet, but will run with the quiet-core installed (also helps prevent melting of the rear mud guard/turn signal).

Well, I mised that. Learn something every day.

I already have my Akra and love it, so we'll see how long before it needs repacking.

As I said, I am VERY familiar with repacking...and that is pretty much why I am trying to avoid it. Sure, it is "easy". But it still takes time. It still costs $. I bought this bike BECAUSE of the 26k mile valve interval. If I wanted to spend my time maintaining rather than riding I would have bought a Ducati!
You are misinformed about the maintenance requirements of today's Ducatis. While not a S10, far less than BMW or KTM. OK back to exhausts. ;D

Yeah, ear plugs are a MUST on the motorcycle. One look at the OSHA dB exposure table will tell you that.

My ONLY reason for considering the Leo Vince so much is the $200 price difference. I am tempted just to buy the Leo Vince and hope it isn't too loud. I guess I could always turn around and sell it for a small loss and buy the Akra later if it is a problem.

I'm not sure if some of you may have missed what Jaxon said about the round disk with holes. This is used to lower the DB to stock levels.
I tried one on mine and it did quite the can by quite a bit. I also tried drilling a larger size hole. This did not change the tone much.

The disk goes between the inlet pipe and the header pipe. Simple install.

Where was this post?

My only concern with something like that is it provides a significant reduction in flow. The main idea with the aftermarket mufflers is maximizing flow for maximizing HP. Most companies (Leo Vince/Arrow) do this buy using a straight through perforated pipe with packing around it. That allows the exhaust to flow STRAIGHT out at a very high flow and velocity. Unfortunately, it is also quite loud without any dB killer. So they put a pipe in the end of the exhaust. This then SLOWS and REDUCES the flow. Now the exhaust spends more time interfacing with the packing. Sound is deadened, but usually so is hp. I realize the following isn't a Tenere, but the premise of the exhaust is still the same:

http://www.ducati.ms/forums/44-multistrada/133991-my-mts-1200-lost-40-horsepower.html

What I am MOST interested in is HOW Akrapovic designed their can. Clearly they designed it to be quiet from the start and did not "bandaid" it with a dB killer option. Has anyone seen the insides of the Akra exhaust for the Tenere?

The post is on the first page of this thread.
I did not mean to imply that putting the disk in would not affect the flow of the exhaust. It will, however, if you want to lower noise, it will do that nicely.

You could always buy an Akra and cut it open, but that would be a little expensive. ::025::

If you spend $550 on an exhaust with the intent of unleashing a few hp, and then plug it back up with a restriction to get it quiet that kills hp, what have you accomplished other than losing $550? (I realize you save some weight and add some bling).

I didn't mean to "cut it open". I was just wondering if anyone had found the re-packing instructions. They might have a picture that shows the internals.

What I THINK you would find:
A "Y" at the start of the muffler feeding 2 smaller perforated pipes wrapped in packing. These pipes would probably end at the turn down individually.

I THINK the extra exposure to the packing would be enough to get the sound down. Flow should still be good which would explain why the Akra doesn't seem to lose HP to the other mufflers.

We used to do this with a 3/8" drive sockets on the old VW Bugs to pass inspection when the baffles blew out...shove one up each exhaust pipe and it would quiet it right down. We would just put-put over to the inspection station so not to blow them out...until after the inspection anyway ::)

Re: Exhuast Opinions

Can you fit the stock can on the Arrow cat-less headers

Also where can these be bought (preferably at discount) in the UK.

I fitted a Staintune (*note* -- non- new not for the Supa10...this was a left hand used can from another bike*)

AND...this just in - before I fitted it, I got this in an replied email from Staintune AUS ::

John,
We are in the process of developing a muffler for the Super Tenere. It is
still several weeks away from mass production. If you wish I can advise when
they are ready for dispatch.

Yes you CAN, pun intended. I have an Arrow header. Have had TBR, Stock and Leo Vince cans on it.
