Exhaust Opinions

I am starting my search for some HP mods and I began searching for random exhaust threads on the forum. I think it would be cool if we had 1 thread stickied for posts with reviews and photos of the different exhausts.

I know I want a full setup. I am pretty sure Arrow is the only company that makes headers, so that part of the equation is easy.

With regards to the muffler, I want to maximize power and minimize weight/NOISE/cost. I know the Akra is widely known as the most quiet. I see just about everyone else offers a "db" killer. Anyone have any experience with the different brands? Do the db killers actually kill anything?

I have a Leo Vince and use a stinger, without it the can is loud. With the stinger in, it is louder than stock and louder than the Akra.
I believe it weighs much less than the Akra from what I have read.
This can will need repacking as it gets older.
I don't believe it is too loud, but I wear ear plugs.. I have rode with a group of Wings and no one complained.. ::025::

Re: Exhuast Opinions

ARROW are the only manufactures that makes the headers for the Yamaha Super Tenere 1200 currently. You are correct that the Akrapovic is probably the quietest. Its a very nice part. The Leo is another good option because of the turn down tip and the DB killer. With the DB disc installed, it brings this muffler to Euro spec DB levels. You can also get this muffler in TI and full carbon. Ive had the opportunity to install and ride the bike with each muffler/headers. They are all nice and will all breath better than the stock header / muffler.. If you have any questions about any of them just let me know.. Thanks

Does anyone know the weights of the Leo Vince w/ "stinger" and the Akrapovic?

Re: Exhuast Opinions

I installed a full Arrow system. The entire system was the same as JUST the stock muffler alone (11 pounds).
According to Arrow's dyno chart, it puts out 92 hp stock and 102 hp with the full system (quiet insert removed).
Its got alot more power, a nice bark and not a high pitch. Really sounds like my XR650R with a full FMF system.
I'm very very happy with it. The fit was perfect!!

Been working this myself, Here's what I know so far:

I have Arrow header (from Jaxon), Leo on the way (from Jaxon). Jaxon = bad for slush fund.

I have the Two Brothers in Ti, Black Series available if someone likes loud, sumbich sure is light and purdy tho.

This is GREAT information and an awesome chart.

Are the LV dB numbers 98 w/o the stinger and 94 with?

It looks like the Akra is able to maintain a very quiet sound with only 1.4 extra pounds.

Next we need to add HP to the chart :)

Yep, stinger in and out.

If anyone has info on Arrow, PM me and I will update my chart and re-post.

FWIW the guys at Leo USA were awesome answering my questions. Made the purchase decision EASY!

I bet the $200 difference didn't hurt either!

The Leo Vince uses packing? Did they happen to share the expected life/maintenance interval?

They say around 15K miles or so for a re-pack. Not that big of a deal, especially if you have done it before. They even have a video on the LeoVince site on how to repack if you have not done it before.

I have owned MANY aftermarket exhausts that have required re-packing and that is why I asked what LV felt the maintenance interval was.

In my experience, on V-twins, the packing would last 6-8k miles. My SV650 actually destroyed the packing on a trip to Georgia and I didn't get the carbon fiber Yosh can re-packed in time and had a small "blowout" of the can. My Buell 1125 would eat exhaust packing in 3-5k miles.

I truly HOPE the LV lasts 15k. Annually isn't too bad, with every oil change gets old.

Anyone know if the Akrapovic uses packing?

I understand that the Akra never needs repacking.
That "zero-maintenance" requirement is most likely enough to coerce the extra $220 out of my pocket. Just need that confirmed.

Re: Exhuast Opinions

I believe taht the Akra for the ST does not use packing, just baffles like the stocker. The Akra web site is unclear on this, as they talk about repacking their cans after 2 years. Don't know what models/version require this. But even if they do, repacking is a simple job.

As I said, I am VERY familiar with repacking...and that is pretty much why I am trying to avoid it. Sure, it is "easy". But it still takes time. It still costs $. I bought this bike BECAUSE of the 26k mile valve interval. If I wanted to spend my time maintaining rather than riding I would have bought a Ducati!

LOVE that emoticon. That IS my moto. I'm trying to keep my exhaust inline with that if possible. ::003::

Then I guess you will disappointed with having to do oil changes every 4000 miles ;)
