True legitimate legally accessible places to ride "off road" are rare around here. I doubt I've ever taken the Tenere on anything that is actually off every map. Fortunately there are lots of dirt roads within easy reach and some of them can get pretty interesting as they snake up and down the mountains.

I'm always happy to find roads marked like this:

Technically it's not off road, but it is a good time on the Tenee.
Off road is technically a misnomer for ANY group of enthusiasts, whether it be bikes, quads, side by sides, Jeeps and other 4x4s, etc. Which has hurt a bit over the years in protecting riding areas. Off Highway is more accurate, though not perfect. For the Tenere, I tend to refer to it as an "all roads" bike, and note that it was designed to go around the world (as evidenced by the adventures of Nick Sanders and our own Trevor - DCStrom).

I do not take mine off road....when I bought it I was looking for a shaft drive bike with a comfortable sit up riding position to replace my ST1100 and the S10 fit the bill and was affordable (non-BMW) to boot. I have my DR650 to take me off road and on dual sport rides....

I was trying to figure out what you meant by a pole. Thought it may be on off road riding aid. Then I understood, you meant a POLL. Haha. Anyway yes, lots of good destinations only accessible on the dirt or gravel.
Is the word POLL spelt POLE in America? I know they mis-spell lots of other words so is this another one or is it just a genuine mistake? ;)

I bought mine as a touring bike, with the capability to go places I wouldn't want to take a nice touring bike... So while I may not PLAN off road excursions, I like that it is an option the bike can handle, within reason. The good news is the bike is more capable than I am. So, Hello My name is Joe and I'm a poser.

I sure as heck go off-road. Here's a video of me riding in the sand and failing miserably. To top it off, I killed my radiator fan. I replaced the fan and am back to going off-road! Sand is stupid hard to ride on. Dirt, gravel, and grass are much easier.

If I wasn't planning on going off-road, I would've bought a Sport Touring bike instead.

Yep, yesterday.

She had 76 miles on her when I popped her dirt cherry!
Luckily it rained on me all the way home, washed some of the red clay off.

Pole could either a mis-spelling or joke, and yes the word is spelled "poll" here in the New World. My guess is that Shrek will blame his spell checker, because that's what I would do.
:p

And of course I rode off highway on dirt paths and roads.

I believe this adventure thing is just a big marketing scheme a lot of people got sucked in on a false pretense.
Whether a BMW, a KTM or a Super Tenere, these are not dirt bikes one can actually ride off road with confidence.
This whole thing it is way overrated and untrue.
Think negative much?

"The sizzle sells the steak" is absolutely true in marketing. But the fact is that the ADV bikes are the 2-wheeled SUVs, able to do pretty much everything well. They've taken the place of the old Universal Japanese Motorcycles (UJM).

Btw - can I sell you some pasta and MRE s for your apocolypse shelter? J/k

I always have a camera ready WRW.
I still want to see some pictures from that Frog Bayou ride.

When I use the term "Off Road" that's just what I'M talking about.

I do not.

Have both a V-strom and the Tenere and I do not intentionally ride "off road." Gravel roads if I need to get somewhere or if I get turned around and lost, which happens occasionally.

I am more of a 'sport touring" style rider, if you need a label, I just no longer have a "sport touring" body. As I have gotten older, I find the "adventure" bikes suit my ageing joints, and need for luggage.

Have to admit I personaly think I'm a crap rider off road but I do take it off as much as I can. Been and seen some amazing sights met some amazing people with the same interests. Feel sorry for you if you think that way.

I have taken my six week old Tenere off tarmac onto a couple of easy dirt tracks, however I doubt I will use it off tarmac much. I previously owned a BMW R1150GS and a Moto Guzzi Stelvio, both of those bikes were used on a few fairly easy tracks, but my main reason for buying this type of motorcycle is the riding position, luggage carrying capacity and are very pillion friendly.
The fact that they are able to handle various types of road makes their versatility a bonus. On trips to the Alps and Dolomite mountains I have followed curious looking tracks and found old WW1 forts, I would not have ventured down these had I been on a 100% road bike.
In past times for more serious 'off road' riding I used to have a Yamaha XT225 Serow, that was incredibly easy to use, and I wasn't frightened of dropping it and causing expensive damage to it as the other big 'adventure' bikes I had. Some years ago I attended the BMW off road skills course in south Wales and I was totally in awe of the instructors, the way they handled the big 1200 twins was amazing, Simon Pavey was one of my instructors....a true riding god. It also helps if you know you don't have to pick up the tab for any damage.

I ride paved roads unless there is no dirt gravel or cow trail to go on. My tires like dirt better than anything.

I have to say I do a lot of Highway to get to the honey!
But without off road tires I limit myself.
If I have knob's installed I start doing stupid things that makes me smile with happiness that I bought this bike.
This bike does dirt rather surprisingly well with the right hiking boots. ::026::
