I bought my S-10 because it has all the traits I enjoyed in my V-Strom 1000, but none of its compromises/foibles. It's a great, comfy long-distance platform, a hoot on twisty pavement and a superbly capable two-up tourer. No appreciable off-road use for me.

I sure as heck go off-road. Here's a video of me riding in the sand and failing miserably. To top it off, I killed my radiator fan. I replaced the fan and am back to going off-road! Sand is stupid hard to ride on. Dirt, gravel, and grass are much easier.

If I wasn't planning on going off-road, I would've bought a Sport Touring bike instead.
Were you riding stock tires i the sand or something more appropriate? And I noticed that you have crash bars. Did you dent the cowling over the radiator fan or did it just not like the drop? I heard they are an expensive fix and I guess this drop wouldn't be covered under warranty? How hard / expensive was it to fix?
BTW - I take mine off road and so this (dropping) will eventually happen to me too

Looks like his crash bars might be the Yamaha engine guards, no protection over the radiator cover. Even with Altrider bars that cover that area well, the sand was loose enough that it may still have impacted the cover over the fan. Yep, could have had more protection, could have made no difference. We've seen left side impacts enough now, I'm thinking if we see there's a chance the cover has been impacted, we need to shut down immediately and take a few minutes out of our journey to lift that cover and be sure the fan still spins freely.

Sand! Reminds me of the time I went to visit a friend living in a trailer in the backwoods of Ocala, FL. Had to ride a couple miles of sand road on a Triumph Rocket III, giant fat pig of a bike. Somehow I kept it up.

Off road? Yep.

Mostly just nasty fire roads so far. This is the first time I've ridden off road and it's fun.

3 things I know I need...

A set of Mitas' for it.
A better skid plate for it (ACD here I come)
And better skillz for the off road.

I've dropped it a couple of times with the only damage being to the side stand extension and scuffed up crash bars. And honestly the reason I dropped it is because I haven't a f#ck!ng clue what I'm doing off pavement.

But I am having a seriously good time with my bike. :)

I took it off road once in Florida. Too much sand. I hate sand. I'll keep her on solid ground until I get to a state that isn't made from a beach. Then I'll get dirty.
