Don, I haven't been to the Yucatan but did get through much of Canada and Alaska and up the haul road a few years ago on a DL1000. I imagine the bikes you have or the XTZ would be great for either ride. I'd hate to take a new bike like the 2011 R1200GS up that haul road since no bike seems to be the same after some of that Calcium chloride sticks like cement to it in spots hard to get too. I wondered about the XTZ and some of the fuel one might get in Mexico, but the way others have ridden it, I bet it would be fine. I can use the dollars on some other things now and save for the next bike. Like you I'm retired but try not to think I'm worthless :-\ :
. I'll just do a little reconditioning of the ST that has about 97,000 mi. on it and go for another 50,000-100,000 (hey it is a Honda you know
).
doctorj
doctorj, I worked in Alaska as a Pipefitter for 5 years in mid-80's, riding either of two of my motorcycles up and back every year!
I was only there working in Alaska in the Summers, as soon as the ALCAN was clear I'd ride up.
As soon as the "termination dust" fell from the sky, I would go to the Union Local Job Steward and say: "Get me my money!" Then South I would ride.
Either my 1985 BMW R80RT or my 1984 Harley-Davidson Shovelhead FLH Electra-Glide were my Alaska motorcycles of choice. Any motorcycle can be ridden on the Haul Road if the weather conditions are dry, from a Vespa Scooter to a Mammoth Munch. Since I worked for ALYESKA through Viking Corporation of Seattle we could use their meteorologist's for forecasting.
Both the R80 and FLH made it up to Prudhoe Bay. I installed the piping in Pump House Number Four, which is just North of the Atigun Pass. I also shipped out to Unalaska, Atka and Adak Islands to install fire protection systems in 3 Native American School Houses. I LOVE ALASKA!!
PS: doctorj, are you interested in riding Mexico in October? I turn 63 en Octubre 28 and I want to celebrate mi Cumpleanos in San Carlos, Banamichi and Alamos. If you've an interest in this, please contact me at either 480-440-4666 or bemerdons@aol.com
