My 2012 vibe was due to the clutch basket, I have no doubt about it after I installed the 14 basket.
But first thing I did was get rid of them Damn OEM bars and installed risers with Motocross bars, my wrist would throb after a long ride and sometimes go numb, you could also put the OEM bars on a vice and put a pipe over the ends and bend them forward to remove the radical back pitch it has.
Seriously get the 14 basket it is the main key to 95% of your vibe removal, I almost was going to sell my Tenere at one point due to the vibe issue.
Love this bike, next is ECU Flash if I can stop riding it for a week! ;D

I'm nearing 7k and my acc (I think that's what it's called) is beginning to rattle at start up. It only lasts a few seconds. Now it's down to dollars and sense. I put the cheap risers on, but now wish the came back hair. Once I dial in my posture I'll work on the clutch basket. I'll look into those slip on grips. Thank you

The Cam Chain Tensioner, CCT, is what many have concluded to be the cause for the half dozen or more loud clacks heard at what is usually a cold start. The loud rattle at start up has gone away for the many that have converted their 2012 or 2013 Tenere to the use of a 2014 or newer tensioner. Others have gone to a fixed mechanical tensioner with similar results. 7,000 miles is very early, usually not an issue till the 30-40k's.
The clutch basket thing was a hand numbing buzz at certain rpm's. Me, I wanted the almost pound heavier clutch basket to change several other characteristics.
ROX makes several nice and fairly economical risers.

I have a general question regarding the '14 clutch basket. How easy is it to change and would I only need to change the 3 components, basket, nut and gasket? I have a 2012 with 14k miles on.
I ask, because although I am no mechanic, I have a fair bit of motor (4 wheels) experience, and not a complete numpty, but have limited tools. I do plan on getting the clutch basket tool should I decide to do it myself, depending on the answers I get.
One last question, does the oil need draining when changing out the basket? I will re-read this thread when I get close to actually doing it (thanks Koinz ::008:: )

Only trick is holding the basket in place while working that nut. Some have used a basket holding tool, real slick, others have used an impact gun off-on. The one I like is 6th gear and heavy rear brake application to hold the engine still. I used the tool when I did mine.
Oh, and the change is done on the side stand, the oil is a long ways down there, even more so when on the side stand.

Finally got my parts after the Stadium Yamaha debacle (Partsfish came through QUICK). Wow what a difference, the bike is smooth as silk. The only way to draw a parallel is before it felt like my old Ducati Monster with an open dry clutch. Imagine shaking screws in a metal coffee can and you have a Duc clutch. Now its quieter and smoother, an all around improvement. I'll know if the right hand numbness goes away tomorrow after my 200 mile ride.

Big thanks to Koinz for the write up and the others for the input.

Dealer replacing Clutch Basket

My new 2012, dealer says he'll replace the Clutch basket and CCT for parts price, $400, no labor cost.

I think this a good deal. Not sure what you guys are getting it done for.

He said he will ask Yamaha if they will do anything with this. What has been your experience with Yamaha.

My dealer I think is being pretty fair so far. Really nice guys. ::017::

I would say that's a good deal. That's cheaper than you can buy the parts for and he gets to make some good money on the deal too.

Does the original 2012-13 clutch basket impact long-term reliability of the engine? Do any of the high mileage S10s still have the original basket?

Yea, the 12-13 basket has now been labeled as a fault of the Tenere. Even a fail.
But it's not.
Im one that changed to the new one simply because of the conviction by a few buddies that I would be impressed. I did it to please them. I personally didn't find anything irritating about my OEM clutch.

But, they were right. It feels far more refined now. Because that is really what it is....a refinement.
Makes an awesome bike even more awesome. And just like the ECU flash, it looks like unanimous approval by everyone who does it.

Kinda surprised, but my 'new' 2012 is in the shop to get the c basket and CCT replaced...........................no charge! Yamaha picked up the parts and dealer installing for free. ::015::

Although I think some of the guys at the dealer are thinking, WHY? Glad I was working with the owner. None of them have heard of these issues, but they haven't sold many of these things.

I also showed them the fluids I changed out when I thought it looked a little dark. Pretty sure it's normally clear and NON gunky!

Wow, never seen 'gunky' in a reservoir before. Get it all done bey the dealer to record all the faults.
It's so easy to do I just did it myself and sent them the picture and gave them the evidence I pulled out of reservoirs.
Trying to be nice seeing they are doing this work for free.

??? Did Yamaha authorize your clutch basket replacement based on the vibration complaint? If so, it seems like they would just put in another 2012-2013 version. I can't imagine Yamaha picking up the tab on installing a 2014-2015 basket into a 2012 bike...
