I have read Amsoil's motorcycle oil "White Paper" several times over the years, and though I can appreciate Amsoil dealers/distributors, etc. trotting out the four-ball test whenever they want to promote Amsoil products I personally don't agree that it is the single most important criteria in judging overall performance in a motorcycle oil. That's doesn't mean "I'm right and you're wrong", just that I don't think we agree on what each of us may want in our motorcycle oil.

Since I don't want to turn this into another typical internet "oil thread" let's just leave it at that, shall we? ;)

Getting back to my original question... Do you have specific numbers for the nominal PPM for zinc and phosphorus in your motorcycle oils? What kind of nominal PPM difference is there between your 10w-40 and 20w-50? I would hope you would have those numbers...

And no, the "measurement of key ingredients" is not my only, or even my primary, criteria for determining the oil I use. Zinc and phosphorus levels are just one I like to look at, and since you are wearing a "Vendor" hat in this thread I thought you would know the chemical component and "key ingredient" levels of your product.

Thanks!

Dallara

~
Sure Dallara - here are the numbers:

10W-40 Zinc: 1417 ppm Phosphorus: 1206 ppm

20W-50 Zinc: 1434 ppm Phosphorus: 1221 ppm

I will also mention that I don't hang my hat completely on the four ball wear test - there are several other test that are important to look at such as Shear Stability, Rust Prevention Characteristics, Foaming resistance, Total base number and others... you get the idea. Basically my opinion is it the actual performance that matters in each category - not the differences in additives between manufacturers. We can talk complex chemistry, but at the end of the day - we're all looking for the same thing: What Oil will give me the results I desire? That's why we focus so much on measuring results rather than comparing things such as a spectrographic analysis...

Good luck with your research!

I think Coastie is using Shell T-6 Rotella 5-40, I have been using it myself for sometime as well.
Sorry I came off so heavy I tend to be that way I just find some AMSOIL vender's come off like Flea Market pawn shop sellers, I have the best of the best of the best. 8)
I watched some good battle royals on a couple forums with AMSOIL as the subject!!.

My apologies and>>> ::004::
All is good Ramseybella - thanks for giving me some perspective though!

The Shell T-6 is a great oil. It gives good protection and performance very similar to what we have to offer. I could try to get into the nitty-gritty differences between the two products, but at the end of the day - they both will work well and make your bike last longer than conventional oils or even OEM products such as Yamalube...

The Shell T-6 is a great attempt at making a universal oil. It works in everything from a Semi-truck to a lawn mower, a BMW car to a S10 bike - etc... the one down side is this does kind of result in a jack of all trades, but a master of none situation. As an example, motorcycles often sit for long periods of time, so rust and corrosion prevention is an important aspect of motorcycle oils. AMSOIL motorcycle oils as well as other motorcycle specific oils would perform better in humidity cabinet tests done for rust protection vs. the Shell T-6.

Just something to consider. Either way I'm glad your bike is running well - and the same with Coastie!

Additional note 1: Our company also sells Shell Quality Fuels and I have access to wholesale Shell Lubricants (We sell Shell when a customer is not interested in the benefits of synthetics) - I'm not an anti Shell guy by any means. Every engine I own runs on nothing but Shell Fuels, but even the Shell Tanker Trucks that transport our fuel have AMSOIL in the crankcase...

Additional note 2: I forgot to mention this above, but it is another important thing to be aware of. The Shell T-6 oil meets the CJ-4 rating for Diesel engines. This specification requires certain changes to the oil to support additional soot loading in the oil which reduces soot (smoke) in the air for better emissions on diesel engines. Also, and more importantly, the specification requires changes designed to improve fuel mileage on diesel engines. One of these changes is reducing the amount of phosphorus in the oil. This is a key ingredient in the protection of motorcycle engines and you won't find any Motorcycle oil manufacturer reducing their levels of phosphorus... this is another example of the problems encountered when you try to make one oil meet specifications for multiple equipment types.

T-6 really is a great oil and I'm not trying to knock it... but a motorcycle specific synthetic oil is going to better protect your motorcycle engine than a multi-purpose synthetic oil.

Welcome aboard Steve!

Happy to see you made it through that "crack in the door" that a vendor first sees when they show up here the first time.

I don't envy you. Lol

My take on this crowd is, that for the most part, this isn't anybodies first rodeo. :)
Most of us are seasoned, if you know what I mean. Lots of years chasing the wind.
On top of that, you will find some really smart and knowledgable folks. And I mean REALLY smart.

Oh, and one more thing,.......we like to spar! (Some more than other, of course)
So don't get too timid if we make you explain your claims. :)
It's even harder for the vendor. They gotta get it right or they might get their feet held to the fire. As a result, we have some of the best here.

Good luck!

Steve,

How about you post up some forum deals?

What would an "oil change special" go for? Figure 4 qts of the appropriate oil for the Tenere in your opinion.

How about a "final drive Friday" with a special on the appropriate gear oil?

This is a targeted audience, let us know what your products cost for OUR bikes. If we want to branch out into our cars and other vehicles so be it, but putting the S10 specific pricing up front would be great.

A couple of you have asked about specific pricing so I'll provide a couple of examples:

(Please note: these are prices valid through this forum only for fellow riders that contact me directly. If you or someone else visits our website, normal retail prices will apply for all purchases online. You can visit our website though if you want additional product information.)

AMSOIL 10w-40 Full Synthetic Motorcycle Oil would be $8.99 / Quart

AMSOIL 75w-90 Severe Gear Oil - this is what I use in my Tenere and due to the high power of this bike and the potential of extreme riding conditions, it is what I would suggest for anybody else - $11.99 / Quart

If you play in the water a lot and have serious concerns about water penetration into the gear box - the Severe Gear oil will resist foaming caused by water, but we have a Marine Grade gear oil that will resist foam better and does meet the Yamaha spec for the tenere rear drive, although it isn't designed to handle as high pressure and stress as the Severe Gear - the Marine Gear Oil is $8.99 / Quart.

AMSOIL also makes a very high quality filter that will work on the S10; however, it is about 3/4 inch longer than the stock filter, and therefore I can't make any promises about how it would work with aftermarket lower skid plates. I have it on my bike with the stock skid plate and zero issues. It is an awesome filter that uses a really cool nano-fiber technology which allows for high flow rates but catch smaller particles than a normal filter and has the ability to hold more than a regular filter. Basically, it has smaller holes in the media, but many more of them. The slightly longer design of this filter will may a small increase in the total oil needed for an oil change (very small difference, but I thought I would mention it.) These are $14.

Free shipping requires the purchase of at least 12 quarts total (can be a mix and match.)

Otherwise, add $5 for shipping on a small order.

These prices are about 25% off and as I mentioned, are offered as a benefit for the users of this forum - prices are only valid in the Continental US. I can provide pricing for Alaska and Canada also if desired and it would be cheaper than you could get our products anywhere else, but it would be higher than what is quoted above.

Thanks again for all the friendly comments of late - I hope to see some of you at future rides / events. I'm planning on hitting the road a few times each year and getting some multi-day rides on the bike!

Hey Coastie - thanks for the comment. I'm not sure if I understand completely though... are you saying you run Diesel Oil in your motorcycle?
Yep Mobile Delvac. I was using Amsoil until started burning almost quart of oil every 4k miles. So I tried a non synthetic to see if it slowed or stopped. No such luck! Its cheap, So now Ill just carry a bottle with me on my trips. No big deal, she runs like a top, and most of my oil consumption is due to riding it in the heat at HWY speeds loaded down with gear.

Makes sense to me Coastie - I would probably do the same thing...

Hi Combo!

I'm with you - I love how my clutch and transmission feel with AMSOIL.... difference you can feel! People never believe me when I tell them that until they actually use AMSOIL and experience it for themself.

I'm little jealous of the extra riding months you Texans have. My Cousin is an Attorney for a Federal Court Judge down there and he just got engaged. I'm waiting to find out when the wedding is, but I figured it might give me a good excuse for a ride down your way (my wife would have to fly down or something - she doesn't ride :) )

Welcome to the forum. While I don't believe in the MLM stuff, I have ran Amsoil for almost 10 years and it is a darn good product. It really helps that I live down the street from the Amsoil distribution center here in North TX.

Anywho, welcome to the site and I love the looks of the black Tenere's.

I have been a faithful AMSOIL user for many years. All of my vehicles run in the heat of the desert utilizing AMSOIL and have gotten great oil analysis reports even after extended drain periods of 12 months / 12,000 miles. The only vehicle that doesn't run extended drain periods is the wife's Hyundai Sonata, because it is still under warranty. I am looking forward to switching the S10 over to AMSOIL, probably at the 600 mile first service. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

...Glad you're having good results with AMSOIL - I too have been a user in all my vehicles and machines for many years even before starting the distribution company.

Best products we have for the S10:

AMSOIL 10W-40 Motorcycle Oil

AMSOIL 75W-90 Severe Gear for the rear Drive

AMSOIL Motorcycle Filter EAOM103 - but please note this is slightly longer than the OEM filter, and therefore may not be compatible with skid plates that wrap around the filter.

AMSOIL Quickshot Gasoline Treatment keeps fuel system clean, prevents water issues including water related ethanol problems, and works as a short term stabilizer (up to a few months)

AMSOIL Gasoline Stabilizer is a long term fuel stabilizer

AMSOIL Motorcycle Octane Boost is a great way to safely achieve higher octane levels than you can get at the gas pump. Often used in combination with Quickshot when people are at gas stations that don't offer premium or ethanol free gasoline.

Miracle Wash is a product we offer than works great on the wind screen as well as the body and frame of the S10 - basically any smooth surface that you can wipe and buff out. This is a waterless cleaner that works with just the spray can and a rag. You spray on a small area, let it sit for a few seconds and then wipe off. Then using a different rag you buff to a nice polished streak free finish. I love this for long trips!

We also carry a full line of Mother's Polishes and Waxes which work very well.

All of these products can be found on our website at www.LubeSuppliers.com - however, I will give special pricing and free shipping to anybody from this Forum as I have mentioned before... just a little thanks for all the helpful info I've found on here.

Thanks!

My oil has arrived as has my filler tube, thanks for the fast shipping. Looks like I may hit my first oil change by this weekend. I will be interested to see what the OEM fill looks like and how the clutch feels afterwards.
