Skid plate just makes a resonant plane under the bike. It will kinda-sorta amplify rattling and you may interpret the whole engine as going up a notch on the 'tinny' scale. I can testify that it will be noticeable to some degree. It's up to you if you want to dampen it or deal with it. I lived with it on my KLR, and actually appreciated hearing the ping of rocks (or in some cases 'DING!") letting me know I ought to check things over when I stopped.

::008:: hearing the engine, and knowing what it is suppose to sound like is better than any idiot light

Got my Altrider skidplate installed and test ridden today. Even with a couple of coats of "rubberized" coating, it sounds different. Not bad, or distracting, or even louder, just different. I only notice it when cruising on the highway. Sounds like...a little whistling. There are a lot of holes on this plate, cut for weight reduction, aesthetics, and access, lots of places for wind to pass through. Goodness, I didn't just say 'pass wind' did I? No matter, a couple more rides and it'll be normal.

Do the skid plates really make that much noise? I mean prior to mounting should I really consider some kind of coating? I already less than love the engine noise of the S10, but is the skid plate a rattling or a hum or what?
Some does.
In the S10 I had the Touratech and now the ACD. I can't hear any noise wuth The Touratech and with the ACD the bike sounds a litte different but is difficult to apreciate.
What I can hear clearly are the "clinks" and "clonks" the stones did in it!! ::008::

My AltRider plate is amazingly loud vs nothing at all. I am willing to stick, paint or glue anything to get that sound moving on down the road away from me. Off to try GTmat, inner tubes and anything else I can dream up.

Thanks for the ideas.

I purchased an Altrider from one of the members here who got it from Mingo a few months ago. He apparently hadn't installed it. A few of the bolts were wrong as I found the two right side front bracket bolts that were included were actually the two engine left side case bolts that were suppose to be put back in. Also the two kickstand bolts were not OEM from the kit and were of the wrong thread.. ??? Almost ruined my threads before I noticed the difference. Once that was remedied I dealt with a clearance issue on my cross brace and all is well. I sandwiched three 1 inch squares of gummy rubber between the rear bracket and the skid when I bolted it in place. I took it for a 30 mile test ride and all is well, not too noisy at all.

I have a noticeable vibration/resonance type noise between 3k & 4k. I will have too look out for some sound deadening material.
Also glad is not just me, as I was wondering what is was for a while. :)
