Remove me from the interested list. I just now called the number on their website and they are sending my the free sample. This will be enough to take care of my bike and my son's. Thanks a lot, mcbrien, for the heads up on this.

Heck Fred, if you have any left over, I'll take a square foot, or a little more and pay for the shipping.... ::025::

Hi Jim,

I should have a sq ft of that left for you. I can bring it to Bixby and save shipping. Might cost you a beer, though. ;D

I conFirmed the noise is the skid plate. I changed the oil and filter and ran it with out the plate on no noise. Also with plate on coasting when the noise starts I can put my left boot heel on the plate noise goes away.

Mystery solved but I suspected the plate all along but you never know it could have been giving up the ghost in the transmission or driveline. Not going to pursue this any further as I can barely hear it with ear plugs in.

My GT Mat arrived . First I did my skidplate like this.

The side stand still clanged when I raised it so I figured this was a waste of time
so I went for a ride and it seemed quieter so decided to try this .

The clang is pretty much gone now . I haven't rode it yet but its bound to be even better .
I need to measure up what I have left and get back to the people that wanted my left overs .
I'm also thinking of doing the inside of my front fender . I've had some rocks picked up by my
K60's make some racket bouncing off underside of front fender . This mat stuff has some serious
glue which I believe will hold under any conditions .

What I find annoying with the Altrider plate is when I retract the side stand, it now does so with a big metallic clang.. prior to installation of the skidplate is very quiet. It's not hitting it and is still dampened by the rubber bumper, but for some reason it clangs when it's retracted.

Hello guys. Just wanted to introduce myself in case anyone had questions. Also wanted to let you know that our sample is of our 50mil size. We also have a thicker 80mil version available. If you are interested, let me know and I can get back to you with prices. :)

I think that clang is the short version of what Roy is hearing and I think it is the vibration between the plate and the rear support bracket. They are close together but not close enough, so there is some resonance/vibration that happens at a certain rpm. Mine happens to be right around 3000 rpm. If I ride around at that rpm it will make that sound all day long. At first I only noticed while down shifting but realized I could recreate it if I hovered around 3000 rpm. I also think that we're talking about two different sounds in this thread. One is the afforementioned squawk and I think the other is the sheer volume of engine noise reflected off the skid plate back through the big hole around the steering and forks. The dampening material may resolve both, but I think the squawk/buzz is vibration between the rear bracket and the plate, much like the reed in a wind instrument. I mostly ride with ear plugs so neither are a problem for me. The buzz caught my attention because I thought there might be something mechanically wrong with my bike. Now that I know it's just the skid plate I'm not concerned. I'd probably be adding that sound dampening material if I planned to ride without earplugs, though, because the sound coming up through that hole around the steering is really LOUD! I'm willing to bet that that anyone who didn't add an aluminum skid plate isn't even hearing that sound because the the engine noise is getting pushed out and away from the bike and not pushed back up that hole right into your face. Just my two cents.

Ollie is spot on in his description of that noise I hear. Now that I know it's not the bike I just don't pay it any attention anymore.

Just installed my material from GTmat. I can honestly say this is the best mod you can do if you have a metal skid plate. Difference is night and day! I put two layers on my skid. My DR650 is next. That bike sounds like a bucket of nut and bolts with the skid plate. "Thank You" to Traci at GTmat!

I doubt this would cause a clang. I did take a couple good hits to the rear of the plate
and bent the back mount. It made the side stand really hard to get down. Figured it
out when I got home. You can see the stress marks on the side of the slot.
Magic crow bar had it fixed in a few minutes.

Oh, and yes the plate is noisy.

Oh darn! I just sprayed a couple of coats of rubberized undercoating on my brand new Altrider skidplate. Same stuff I used on my other skidplates, cheap, easy, and no harmonic complaints.
Of course I'll miss the benefits of Impressive Bass Improvement, Reduced Distortion, or Massive DB & SPL Gains of Liqui-Damp, but I wear ear plugs anyway. To be fair, I used a product similar to the GT Liqui-Damp throughout the cab, hood liner, and fenders of my diesel pickup, and it's surprisingly quite...for a (VP44 injected) diesel. No doubt this will work quite well, but I used what I had on the garage shelf.

I recommend masking off the outside of your plate before application so it'll be nice and pretty before you start gouging, dinging, and scratching it off-pavement. Take a picture while you can.

Just giving people another option if they are interested. Yes the text is a copy and paste from our product listing so not all benefits apply to your use. If anyone has any questions about either product, feel free to PM me.

I put one layer of GTmat on my Hepco & Becker skid plate. It really cut down on the noise. I might have to try a second layer.

I do plan to put some on the skid plate of my DR-Z. Hope it works as well.

Wouldn't any skid plate amplify the noise from the motor? I wonder if one could use that stuff at Home Depot/Lowes that is like Rhino Liner....? Wouldn't that lessen the noise some...? I have a Rumbux on the way and was also wondering what I should do for the noise.

Thanks, and have a grand day.

Its a skid plate that is not mounted in direct contact with the engine, its going to amplify noise, welcome to acoustics ::021::

I understand that it will amplify the noise level of the motor.... but does anyone think that the spray in bedliner (like Rhino liner) would lessen or deaden the noise level? Heck, it's only $9. and some change.

Do the skid plates really make that much noise? I mean prior to mounting should I really consider some kind of coating? I already less than love the engine noise of the S10, but is the skid plate a rattling or a hum or what?
