Well I'm almost done with this project, but need a little more info.
If you could, I need the size of the mounting holes to bike. These are the ones that mount the rack without the under bracket. Also the diameter of the countersink at the widest point.

And last but not least :) the length and size of the front and rear mounting bolts.

Thanks, I appreciate it..

Awww, I just had the darn thing apart to measure for you before, and now it's back together. Before I do this again, let's make sure we're getting everything.

You have done so much Katherine, I did not want to bother you again. I did not want to wear out my welcome, so to speak.. ;D

But as long as your up.. ::025::
I could use the size of the holes for the Givi hardware also.
I will send you a pic of the plate and see what you think. It doesn't look like the ALTrider at all. Just in general size. I sure wish I had a CNC.. :)

Hello Katherine, here are some pics of the different steps so far. I took your template and measurements, and some from dcstrom, and transferred all and made a new template.
Then I transferred that to a sheet of aluminum. I need to use a simple design cutout for the center without losing strength.
Let me know what you think.
Jim

Ah sorry mate! Seeing this reminded me that I was supposed to get you some more measurements. Looks like you did ok without them!

As I said in the other post, I had help from Katherine and dcstrom with the measurements and a Katherine traced the outline of her Altrider rack.
I'll buy her dinner if are paths ever cross. ::003::

I started with a 3/16" plate and traced the template and center line. Then laid out the center lines for the holes, then cut with a jigsaw. I used a file to smooth the slots out and then my dremel to finish. I used a DA sander to round the edges.

If I had a CNC it would have been a lot easier. It is a job doing it by hand. All I need now is to drill the mounting holes and the Givi holes and powder coat.

So what was the original goal? Copy the Altrider rear rack?

Not at all. I needed a basic outline and the Altrider rack had some of the things I wanted. If you look at their rack you will see very little, if any resemblance.
The ALTrider rack has turn down sides which I don't think are necessary. My strap slots are in the top of the plate.
If I wanted to copy it, I could have done a much better job... ::025::

I would not have sent him a trace to make a straight-up copy. But we'd been talking in PMs about the measurements of where to put the holes so they match the bike, and match the Givi adaptors. I was trying to measure those for him and was not at all confident that I could get them close enough. I have made a number of my own luggage racks over the years and these small errors in measurement have been the biggest difficulty. So I agreed to trace it for him, to get him that hole pattern.

I'll probably be doing a similar project myself soon. For one-up, I think the Altrider rack places the case too high and/or too far back.

If anyone is thinking it's not kosher to copy the Altrider rack - if that's what was happening - I would disagree. If it's a personal project and not for resale, then fine - I think the exercise would probably only reinforce the value of just going online and ordering the damn thing! :D

I think you did an excellent job there Jim, I did something similar on my V-Strom going to modify it to fit it under the passenger seat to hold the 2 gallon rotopax.

If you have the Altrider rack, it can be mounted without the bottom bracket. This makes the rack platform much lower, and if you remove the pillion seat, the rack is even with the carrier under the pillion seat. Makes a nice, large, flat surface.

BTW - if anyone wants just the lower Altrider piece to mount your own plate on - I have one for sale.

That is the way mine is mounting, so it will be level with the Pillion rack. I still need to drill some 7/8" aluminum round stock for the spacers.

I mounted my Altrider rack in the low position the first time. Then I needed the passenger seat and grab rails so I put it up. Either way the case is still too far back. But if it were moved permanently forward and low, then the grab rails and passenger seat have to come off and stay off. I'm still trying to decide what I want to do about this - I rarely carry a passenger, but never say never.

Right now, even with a passenger and the rack in the high position, the case is still too far back. I don't carry a passenger often enough that I would put a backrest on the case - those Givi backrests are too high for proper support, less comfy than just leaning on a plain Givi E45, especially when the passenger is wearing a jacket with a back protector. So at the very least, that case could come forward maybe 1.5" to 2". It would foul the grab rails, in the low position, but the high position would allow the case to come forward.

I could put it in the high position and make a sliding mechanism of some sort, and cantilever my top case forward over the passenger seat when I'm not carrying a passenger. The case would have to go up a hair higher, though. Is it better to go higher and farther forward, or leave it back and down, or give up the grab rails and/or passenger seat?

What will make me happiest? I haven't decided. So for now, I'm running it as is, in the high position. Pity the grab rails are the way they are!
