I'm going to have to give that left side another try. I got to banging the panel against the inside of the crash bars and figured I'd scratch things up. I'll have to try the tape.

Sorry if I mislead anyone.

Does the slight flare of the left crash bar seem to allow for the removal of the cowling?

Jake, if your going to use tape, make sure to use something like 3M painter tape.. so the sticky doesn't get all over bike from normal tape... I installed my bars last night with no issues... If you would like to call the shop, Ill tell ya what I did... was a snap...

If you look at my pic, I'm using the blue painters tape on mine! Works well.

Ha ha! I'm working on it, Clem! Sorry we didn't meet at Bif's the other night. I usually don't go there, but with the new bike, I thought I'd show it off. Had a few people come up and say "Wow, what's that?" :D

Did you get yours yet?????

When I was removing the right side panel from under the Alt Rider bars it was a tight fit. I used the Glad Press and Seal wrap from the kitchen when I put it back on to cover the whole panel it prevented any scuffs. Then just peeled it off. Not sure I could get it on around the bars to put it on before the panel is taken off but protecting it going on prevents 50% of the potential scuffs. FWIW.

They could at least have the right top bar a bit more out (straighter) towards the front to mach the left side.

I just got them, if I had turned on my welding machine I probably could have done a better job.

Wow, we have an ace fabricator that commented earlier in the threard on how well made they are and how good they look....yet we still have comments like this. Guess who I'm gonna listen to. If you actually read the entire thread, you might get some insight as to why there are shaped that way. Hint, it was done for a good reason...so how about reading a little.

Tremor, the man made a personal opinion. I don't think jumping on his ass and telling him to read more is necessary.
I also think they could have made the bars more symmetrical. As for a doing the job, they hold up very well.

Just wanted to thank everyone that welcomed me aboard last week and say I got the Touratech crash bars they look and fit great, also who doesnt like stainless. I have been considering the Altrider rack as it appears to be well constructed and I like the option of black. I guess its my own fault I think Iam getting sucked into the vacuum of all this great info and all the different opinons.

Well, We both agree on that one, he is an ace fabricator and by looking at his work I don't think he was involved in designing this product. I did read his comment, he (altrider dealer) has his own reasons to think of them that way.

Some areas the crash bars are asymmetrical for good reason, other arias it's poor design. Take a look at one if you haven't already then you'll be the judge.

My Altrider crash bar question is this: What is the purpose of the little ring shaped bracket on the bottom of the left crash bar? It goes over a fitting the protrudes from the bottom of the radiator, and you have to line it up to get the bars installed. It must add to the manufacturing time, and it's a nuisance during the install, so I can't imagine it would be there for no reason. But what is the reason? It's not to make it pretty - you can hardly see it. And it seems like, if you went down hard enough to damage the crash bars, it would rip that fitting off the bottom of the radiator and INCREASE the damage rather than saving the radiator from damage.

What's it for?

I think you answered your own question. It is the lower radiator locating mount. The stock plastic crash guard thingy (a highly technical term :D) has it too. Without it the radiator would flop around and probably rub a hole in it somewhere.

All I can say it was a two person job to install my AltRider bars but they are very solid. It just took some muscling to get them to fit ...
I would buy them again no question about it.

The Givi bars have it as well.
