Their instructions are not correct. I think if I were putting them together I'd do it on a clean bike so you can see all the features during the install and everything is clear. Theirs are done on a bike that just went through a ton of mud. Also, some of the black/white pics show a finger over the end of a bolt so you don't know if you need the hex head or the socket head. On the right rear side, the upper long bolt is the hex-head and the lower one is a socket head - I was trying to use the 2 hex-head bolts for that as the pic had a thumb in the way.

Some of the bolt sizes are not correct on the instructions either... I was able to figure it out though so if you place everything out on the floor it helps. I didn't have to reuse any bolts they said should not be reused.

Another tip - place a towel over your side panels as trying to do this alone I scratched mine up. I don't care all that much as I may put some undercoating paint on them but it will help you to either do that or remove the right side panel.
Good catch. I forgot that their instructions were a little off. Had the same issue with the skid plate too with some of their sizing being off.

To play devils advocate... The Super10 is a monster of asymmetry, front to back, even in stock form. These crash bars just follow that lead. And some of you never even noticed this until it was pointed out here. Do the crash bars fit the bike without anything having to be flexed? Do they protect the bike while keeping access to open the side panels? If so then perhaps this asymmetry is a necessary evil.
[/quot

I have to concur with Elizilla on the asymmetry of the S10. Look at the SW motech side carriers, asymmetric. Now if any of you Altrider owners are so dissapointed in your crash bars, I am willing to buy your used set, at a discount of course to put on my S10. :D

The crash bars installed quickly for me without any issues. The only issue I had was with the Altrider Skid Plate as they had sent an incorrect bolt with the package so I had to reuse my original bolt that they said in the instructions I wouldn't have to reuse.
+1 on both points. Same experience to a T.

Thanks for the explanation Jeremy.

FYI - the North American version doesn't have a 'glove box' but I understand what you mean is side panels... I wish it had a small glove box though.

I know about this small non-symmetrical issue and when I walk up to my bike I just don't notice it all that much so to me, if they were design that way, I'm good. I do believe a head-on view of the bars on the bike showing this difference would be a nice thing as not every one likes this 'feature' and view it as a 'design error'. Having that on the site and showing that difference puts it out there and those that buy will be aware of this and happy instead of some that are now unhappy.

I haven't tried removing the left side panel so I haven't verified for myself that this design lends to an easier panel removal, the right side is easy. If I can't remove the left panel well, that's a different story.LOL

Hmmm. Looking at the bars, you're right, limey. The tight tube bend around the front of the cowling may interfere with sliding the left side off the center joining rod.

Actually, I'm not totally convinced that the long joining rod is even required. A 1" long chamfered plug pressed into one of the tube ends halfway would work.
I installed mine without the joining rod. Works just fine. I decided that if something happens in the brush, I did not want to be messing with taking off both sides at once.

I had discussed this with Jeremy prior to the bars being made. They just did not seem to think it would work. I don't know why not.

I am still not happy with the fit on these. It could be better.

There was a long discussion way back on the bars to follow the lines on the bike and to be able to remove the right side glove box. The left side of the bars was going to be far enough away to be able to pull the right fairing away far enough to lift the tank. This is how they came up with the bars and bend but they should have also stood back and looked at the symmetries of the bars and if one side ended being out a little farther than the other then they could have moved that side out to match. As someone said they scratched the upper fairing to remove it on the right side, if they made it symmetrical it would have been easier to remove the glove box then.

As for sticking out farther it really doesn't matter especially when you have back cases on. That back is a wide body.

Got my AR bars on today.. I have to say as a 'production part' it was just about 100% on the money.. The fit was about dead on... They look great... If I where to nit-pick the only thing I can say is on one of the welds it was not completed around the whole tube... There is 1/8" that was not welded... Other than that they fit great, look great ! Good product !

I do not work for AltRider nor get any rebates or discounts(would be nice though :D) I used to make a living with mechanics but now only do it as a hobby. That said, I did my research & reading reviews etc for 8 months and then bought ALL the Altrider guards. Before reading any of these posts I installed them (all items in less than an hour) and only needed my wife to hold & steady the crashbars for a couple of seconds as I threaded a bolt. Fit & finish I thought were excellent for non-factory items. I never took a micrometer & measured things but I felt they really complemented the lines of the S10. Again, before reading these posts I felt the need to remove both side panels. Rh side was dead easy, Lh side I had to wiggle a bit, but never scratched or harmed anything.
Not sure what I'm doing wrong O:) Shouldn't I be having all sorts of problems? ??? I guess I'm too concerned about riding this lovely rather than looking at it

I was on almost an hour with no luck, I will give it another try, I do like the crash bars and I went and ordered the skid plate and the rear rack...
Make sure you remove the (4) quick-disconnect push pins on the inner side of the left hand panel. 2 are obvious, the other 2 are a bit further in......the blinker gets in the way some, since it is so LARGE. I was able to pull up and rotate the panel forward, ease it under the blinker and around the lower right panel screw mount. It comes off up and to the front. I had to put tape on the inner parts of the bars as the panel was a tight fit over the radiator fan and I did not want to scratch the panel.

Like I said in my original post I can see no reason to ever need to remove the panel for any normal maintenance, as you can access the tank bolts and the radiator cap by simply removing the upper panel bolts....there is plenty of room.

Hope this helps.

I personally did not install mine. My local dealer (I-90 in Issaquah WA) did it and had not one bad word - fast, easy & look to be very stout. Also tossed on Tourtech bags - again, no hickups.

Altrider silver glide plate has arrived and is to be installed this weekend at initial service. At that point all that should be left is riding!!!!

Just installed the AltRider skid plate. Fitted up real nice & easy. You cannot change the oil filter with the skidplate in place, so it's going to be a bit of a pain...probably 10 minutes to remove the plate as some of the nuts are a bit fiddly to reach......

Fitted same skid plate just prior to first oil change and yep it is a pain. 7-8 bolts minimum(depending on which you choose), two with well-defined fiddle factor. Next evening, on my first 2-up off pavement ride I managed to squib the edge of a soft ball sized rock with the front wheel, kicking it up directly at the header pipes. Blaanng! Skid plate rung like an aluminum bell. Spkldoe jumped like she was hit! First scratch (on the plate, not on spkldoe), but definitely held its own and no damage to any other hard parts. Paid for itself. I'ma happy camper.

Thanks Steve, I did remove the 4 push pins I even looked at the shop manual still I found it really tight. Like you say really no need to remove the left side panel.
Thanks Paul...

Why not mounted yet? Send me a PM with a price quote. I was thinking of ordering a set of the SWMotech engine guards.
