Re: Paint Prep Worldcrosser Fork Guards

I would like to paint the fork guards a satin black however I am not sure how to prep them properly for paint.
Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Ryder, I was trying to reply to your PM with a copy of this post for the YAMAHA stickers, but Tapatalk won't let me copy and paste on private messages.

Thanks HHH. I appreciate the extra effort.
You're very welcome!

Check one or two pages back, we were talking about Plastidip and one of the guys here did his on satin black, looks purdy.
If you decide to go the plastidip route, these guys are in Florida, good prices and quick shipping.

Dan, just returned from an overnighter in the mountains. Around 550-600 miles and bugs galore.

The fork stanchions were totally bug and debris free! So much easier on the dust and fork seals. Additionally, the guards prevented rock dings on the stanchions precluding a potential seal leak.

You really did do a superb job, thank-you.

Took me a while of searching to find this thread again, so I'm commenting to make it easier to find in the near future. I would love to order a set of these as soon as my toy money comes in. They look bad ass.

Well, finally got around to finishing mine. I got my rough finished per my request. Didn't take much to clean them up and fill any/all holes and blemishes. Doing a trial fit I found that the hard portion of the fibre back does touch the painted surface of the fender. Looking around my parts box I pulled out my Tenere OEM skid plate and pulled the rubber grommets and metal sleeves on the skid plate. I then opened up the mounting holes of the fork quards to accommodate them. Funny enough the two bolts that I also pulled off with my skid plate/mount brackets were a perfect match for mounting the fork guards with the sleeve and grommets installed. (30mm in length). Once bolted up the bolt tightens up completely without putting strain on the guards as they are now riding on the grommets. Basically, just like the OEM front fender.

I finished mine in White Carbon fibre. I painted the inside of the guards white then for prepping the wrap I primed the edges with 3M primer. I then stretched the wrap, trimmed to the back edge and then edge sealed the wrap to prevent it from lifting. I followed up with a quick coat of clear on the inside (help to keep it clean later on) but this is certainly optional. Just having it painted will work just fine as well. Not really sure if I will add the stickers. I'll have to give it some time before deciding.

Painted the back with white. Added two coats of primer along the edge (very edge and 1/2" down the outer surface). Primer really helps with adhesion. To get the vinyl edge cut at the edge you pull the vinyl over the edge then place the razor blade at about 45 degree from outside to inside angled downward. Then just seal the edge with edge sealer. Clear nail polish works too!

Holy cow.... I've never worked with vinyl. First time was a complete failure and I pulled it off soon after I started. Second attempt was better, but I still have some lines/creases that I can not get to go away. I'll try again tomorrow, but there's a big learning curve with that stuff. If I can't get it right I'll just plasti dip them. I do like the carbon vinyl though.
