Re: Brake bleeding - need to flush the ABS pump too?

Since Google lead me to this page after search for the ABS dongle (# 90890-03149-00 ), I figured I should point out that the dongle is no longer available. According to the dealer I bought my S10 at, there is an update to the service manual which says not to do the ABS test unless you dig into the ABS module itself. Seems kind of fishy. Anyone care to opine?

That ABS connector appears to be nothing more than a jumper between the sky blue wire & black wire which is ground.

ABS unit failure

Not impressed with my 2013 worldcrosser.Bought the tenere over a GS to avoid the unreliability I had seen on friends bmw's .Low and behold three years and 7k miles later my bike needs a new ABS pump after recording four short circuit abs fault codes. After my dealers best attempts and mine Yamaha uk took two days to deliberate and make a good will gesture of supplying a pump for £950 instead of a crippling £1550.Somehow I still feel ripped off by Yamaha.

Sorry to hear about the ABS Pump failure. Don't you have warranty?

I think I'd just by-pass the pump and/or get rid of the bike.

Mine went around 10,000km and was covered under warranty. I think it's the only part on the bike that is made in Germany.

Bummer for the hassle. Yam UK seems tighter on warranty than in the U.S.

Your 3+ year old bike has a pump that is likely 4-5 years old. I'd make that point to try to get more on the warranty!

Is there a way to get around the pump and revert to regular brakes? I was riding today and one place I stopped at an intersection had like a 3" drop right where I was stopping, I hit the drop under braking, the ABS right away kicked in and I had no brakes. I get so pissed off when this happens and it happens quite often.. Accident waiting to happen. ABS lovers out there, I'm not in your club.
Same exact thing with the traction control, hit a bump and acceleration is shut off and I'm riding a 50cc scooter for a few seconds. I wish they would take this technology and offer it as an option for guys that don't know how to properly brake or accelerate and appreciate junk that saves your hide if you have no skills.

I've done this on several GS1200 BMW's with the servo brakes. I just run a new brake hose from the master cylinders straight to the calipers. When I get to the shop, I'll take a look at the S10 and see what it would take.

Not much goodwill there, you can buy that pump brand new here in US and delivered to your door for less than that. Curious if you spend the £950 and replace it do you get any warranty on the part?

ABS pump and cost of it was a major part of my decision to spend the $389 USD for an extra 4 years of warranty.

Couple preventive measures for this part:
1) exercise your ABS occasionally to let the brake fluid in the pump circulate. If not you might get stagnant fluid there retaining moisture.
2) ensure the drain holes in the ABS compartment are open. Some have found the ABS pump near submerged in dirt when holes get blocked.

Good tip, my drain holes were completely blocked so I drilled bigger holes.

Doing an ABS pump bypass would be simple. Two $50 brakes hoses is all you will need. Traction control will go bye bye too.

... Not sure what exercising the ABS means. How to exercise the ABS?
... Drain holes?

Can you tel I know very little about ABS brakes. I know they work very well.

Exercising is probably the wrong word. I should have said engage or activate your ABS. Very easy to do on dirt or gravel, just get rolling and grab a big ole handful of front brake and hold, then wait for the pumping. The wait being about .001 nanosecond. Also good to know what the ABS really feels like kicking in. Don't wait to feel that for the first time in a true emergency or else your initial reaction might be to release the lever. I do this almost every time I ride the bike off road.

drain holes are in the bottom of the plastic tray protecting the ABS pump under the seat. If the drain holes get clogged then dirt and water can accumulate and actual submerge the pump which isn't good. Periodically ensure the drain holes are open and clean any dirt out from there. If bike is ridden only on the street this would be unnecessary.

Thank you. Rarely ride off-road but I lean on the front brake lever probably too often.

Agree with SilverBullet.
I exercise mine regularly, and I believe that is the correct term. You need to turn the motor and change the fluid in that loop. You'll notice a firmer lever after cycling them also, purges trapped air back up the line to the master.

Make sure you are rolling at least 20 MPH when you do it. If the ABS is not functioning it gives you time to let go the lever and not fall down!

While I find this an interesting topic, I also find it totally unacceptable that we (motorcycle riders) accept this to be "normal"..... It is not! I hate that we have to accept sub-standard equipment on bikes. I have owned many vehicles over my lifetime and only bikes have issues. I own a BMW SUV, I bought it, I get in and drive it, I don't have to worry if the ABS pump may fail, or make it 'cycle' to ensure that it does at some point in the future when I'm hurtling down a mountain pass with the kids on board. I don't worry that the lights may fail, or the wheel nuts need checking after a few hundred miles until they 'bed' in or that the CCT may fail and implode. Or that strange vibration can be cured with an updated clutch basket, the list can go on, and not just the S10, but all bikes. And it's not the cost either, as my car costs 5 times more than the S10 (like for like new) but it is also 5 times more than the S10 in terms of features, comfort and reliability. I did not have to change the screen because of wind noise or buffeting. And most of all, the customer service is second to none, not like Yamaha or it's dealers. I ride for fun and stress relief, I like riding, so I don't want to be bothered about an impending potential failure, where is the fun in that? ::009:: Normal programming will resume shortly.....

Re: ABS pump failed at 7k miles

Doesn't the system automatically go through some kind of self test / cycle exercise periodically?. All the ABS systems on my other vehicles, be they bikes or cars, do this. I can feel a slight buzz/vibration under the seat by my right foot just as I'm approaching a stop sometimes. I've interpreted this as the ABS pump running a self check cycle. My old ST1100 did and current ST1300 do it just as you are pulling away from a start up, before extinguishing the warning light. I assumed the Tenere did the same?
