I'd be looking to smooth the on-off-on throttle transitions which are somewhat abrupt in both S and to a lesser extent in T mode as well. Not really looking for more power, but I certainly don't what to sacrifice any either. Compared to my ST1300, which isn't particularly known for smooth transitions, the Super Tenere is more abrupt still. I just haven't found any references to a re-flash that will do what I want for the '15 and later Teneres.
Jeff, after having a flashed 12 and then getting the 14ES, I originally thought same as you regarding the on/off/on throttle. On my first multiple day trip to the Ozarks riding some of my favorite twisties, I had the bike in T almost all the time, as I found it smoother coming off of closed throttle. I believe I had an on line discussion with AVC at that time regarding the possibility of smoothing that out. Well, I never had that done and as a little time and miles went by, either the throttle and engine smoothed out, my right hand adapted to the new throttle, or most probably a combination of the two. I now have a bit over 18k miles on it and it is always in S mode and I see no need to have anything modified. I would suggest that you ride it for a few thousand miles and then see if this is still a problem for you.

My main complaint is while riding slow in traffic the engine surges from Off throttle to On throttle. The same problem has caught me off guard while riding twisties. I came way too close to riding off the side of the road. Off the side of the road was down about 50 feet.

I should be getting a new Harmonizer soon and will sync the throttle bodies and check the vacuum caps to see if this reduces/stops the surging.

I've found the same tomatocity. With only 7k miles on my 14 I still hope it will smooth with time.

If not, it will head to AC for a fix.

Hey AC, I remember you saying the mapping is different on the gen2 bikes. Do you see similarities between generations that lead you to believe the surge can be flashed out of the gen2?

I have almost 8,000 miles on my 2015 ES. My Tenere did not have this issue in the early miles. The surge / jump / leap issue started, must have been around 4,000 miles. Hopefully I will be syncing the TB's soon.

That may why I haven't had that problem for a long time, Tim. Early on I balanced the TB's with my Harmonizer, using the 3/4 turn out method that worked well on my 12. And here I had been thinking it was mostly my skill in mastering smooth throttle operation. :D

Interesting. I did a TBS when I got the bike with 2k on the odometer. The surging seems more noticeable recently than when I first got it. I'll have to check the sync and let you know.

Unfortunately I don't own a 2014/2015 personally. Can you guys get a LOT more specific about this surging?

Gear
RPM
Approximate throttle position (your wrist)
Any other pertinent info

just posting up here to offer my own experience re: reflashing a gen II (2014+) tenere, for anyone who might be considering it. my problems with the stock fueling on my 2014ES sound similar to some of the posts here. this is how i described it in a thread last spring:

my main gripes with my bike's fueling are the steady-throttle surging i occasionally get (throttle grip isn't moving so much as a hair - but fuel gets added, then taken away...added, then taken away..) and, more importantly to me, the poor transitions from a closed throttle to initial opening: no matter how smooth and deliberate i try to be, the bike almost always goes from 0% throttle to, say, 10% throttle - as if 1% to 9% don't exist....)
i also thought the engine braking with the stock fueling was too abrupt/too heavy.

i had anthony's reflash done shortly thereafter, and it cured every problem i had. power doesn't feel massively different, but throttle pick-up is much smoother, without the neutered-power feeling the stock "t" mode had. in fact, i now just leave it in "s" mode all of the time. engine braking is much better, as well - natural, and definitely present (it's a big twin, after all), but not nearly as abrupt/heavy as it was with the stock fueling.

6k miles since then, and no problems. ymmv, but for me it was a definite difference maker. it took a bike i had some real doubts about, and turned it into one i love. best money i've spent on the thing.

What you described is the bike in "closed loop mode" while cruising with very little throttle the bike uses the O2 sensor to lean out the mixture as much as possible, during this process though it leans out the mixture then ads fuel, leans out the mixture then adds fuel and so on and so on... if you don't like this a solution is to disable the O2 sensor, this can be done via a flash or with a Oxygen lambda o2 sensor eliminator kit which is much cheaper.

This fools the bike to just run as it would under load, you loose a tiny bit of fuel efficiency but it should be any more than a few km per tank.

Anthony, could you explain the options for a 2014? I hate the excessive engine braking and abrupt throttle response at low RPM.

Thanks,

Joe

I just had mine reflashed by AC. Unfortunately the weather has not been good enough to actually do a good evaluation.
When I get a chance to evaluate I will be posting my evaluation.

Anthony did my 2014 and while abrupt throttle response isn't completely fixed, engine braking has gone down significantly and is much better than it used to be.

Power is very different and has very much improved. It is like a different bike.

All I know is that I would do it again now that I know what I was missing out on.

Yesterday and today I finally got out to test AC's ECU reflash of my 2014ES. AND... I like CR it! More power in T. The surge coming back on throttle coming out of a corner is gone. Also feels like lots more usable power!
I am VERY PLEASED!

I would just PM him. I sent him one yesterday as well. I think it's time to get it done.

Yeah, he's good replying to PMs.

Turnaround from drop to return is about a week. I believe he gets the package, flashes that same day, and ships back the next day. Really good stuff.

Hey AC....
Can a flash from you help decel backfires?
I know the backfire decel popping can barely be heard with my stock muffler but I just threw one a Two brothers slip on & now it's embarrassing.
I like the way the 2bros sounds but try to not let it pop by shifting fast

With your flash can I go back & forth between stock & slip on?

I just picked up a used 2012 and I would be interested in flashing it if that is still an option. I'm in northern Colorado, if that matters. How do I go about getting this done??
