I just read the article in full over Easter. I believe the minimum number of responses required by Consumer Reports to include a brand in their "study" was three. Hardly scientific.

Here here.Karson said:I highly doubt CR is lenient on the Yamaha brand, if you're serious about the word conspiracy. Or, maybe it was meant to be sarcastic? Forums house the majority of folks who post/read only to find answers to problems like you mentioned. Rest assured, all the things that are commonly deemed to be bad/dysfunctional/poor design on a forum are a small percentage of folks who ride an S10. There are way more S10 owners who probably don't even know this site exists...
I don't think a reflash, suspension, "crap" panniers are indications of any quality issues at all. From what I've read as long as you blue loctite the locks on the luggage and graphite the internal mechanisms they work fine. Flash is probably the last mod in a long line of other fuel management mods you should do first. Front suspension is pretty damn solid, the rear is simply undersprung for most and lacks a compression adjustment. Most folks probably don't even notice that... Loose spokes are part of a normal maintenance check, so if you stay on top of it it becomes a rare issue, which nullifies lost spokes. Leaking fork seals happen to any bike if you don't clean your fork sliders or regularly use a wiper to get the dirt underneath if you're a hardcore offrider. Leaking final drives I've only seen a handful of times be mentioned on the forum and its hard to decipher if it's assembly lube finally weeping out from the seals or an actual leak. Fuel pump seal was a recalled item as was the rear luggage rack...
The more I type the more I hope you meant to be sarcastic, at least I hope?
You forgot oil that only lasts 6000KmRIVA said:What about all the leaking fork seals, the leaking final drives , the need for a reflash. the up-grade to the poor suspension front and rear, the loose spokes, the lost spokes, the leaking fuel pump seal, the crap side panniers with the useless locking system, the cooked headlight wiring harness, . etc, etc, and that is only on this forum. Methinks "CONSPIRACY"
Picky Picky. ::020:: ::020::GrahamD said:You forgot oil that only lasts 6000Km
Tyres that need replacing after 10,000Km
Batteries that are stuffed after 4 years.
Coolant that has to be replaced after 2 years.
Brake fluid that doesn't last the life of the bike.
Brake pads wearing down the disks.
Paint that scratches when you ride in dirt and sand.
Fan brackets that bend when you crash.
Crank covers that get holes in them when you land on rocks.
Fork oil that goes off after a while.
POS YAMAHA. Why can't they be left if the garage like other bikes.

In the long list of engine/exhaust mods to do to this bike, what do you all have? Headers, slip on, power commander, autotune, tbs, air screw adjustment, etc..? all the above? i can see where if you didn't do at least a handful of those first, you might be disappointed with the flash. IMO you flash last if you want the full benefit.Tiger_one said:Who needs a flash? Not I! Biggest waste of money yet on this bike.

Need we say more.
Sentimental attachment and has nothing to do with the mechanic. ::025::kraigd said:As I read this it seems people are thinking about what if this happens and what if that happens. I sold my 2012 S10 after 20k miles in 11 months because I missed the feeling of the BMW. I even went back in time and bought the 04 GSA. And yes I have already had an issue. I bought it with 18k on it and at 21k the final drive had a slight movement in it very slight. Just to be on the safe side I changed it out. It takes 45 min. Cost me $700.00 for total replacement. I had the one off my bike looked at ($75.00 service) and nothing was wrong with it and its worth 650.00. Not alot of downside. I will say once you spend alot of time on BMWs its hard to ride anything else. I keep trying, over 60 MCs and I keep going back.
I am thinking about the Moto Guzzi Stelvio NTX, cant wait to ride one. ::021::
PS most men that wed hot women end up getting divorced, far more than if they married avg women. So what just hunt avg women, NOT ME SIR. You have to enjoy what you ride.
I never got the flash, I am stock. Someone has to standup for the stock S10s out there! ::012::Karson said:you're only the second person i've seen who says they have the flash and were disappointed, so I'm genuinely interested.
Can't blame ya...i'd want folks to ride with while us with the flash wait for you to catch up at the next turn offTiger_one said:I never got the flash, I am stock. Someone has to standup for the stock S10s out there! ::012::
