Not that this is really any news to any of us who own a Super Tenere...

Thought you guys might enjoy seeing it anyway. :)

My first scoot was a '73 Yamaha RD 350, and the plugs would foul a bit from the two stroke oiler being off a little....Other than that, I've never really heard of any Jap scoots going bad, well, except my S10, and I don't that that sort of thing happens much.... The 86 BMW was having problems all the time: Bosch is an old German word that means Piece of Crap ::021::

Dallara, do you know whether that includes recalls as a problem.

Just wondering whether BMW would have done better if they weren't also the recall king oe worse if recalls were nit included.

Well that is two more gold medals they can add to the list.

Recall Gold Medal and Problem Gold Medal.

Nothing I saw said anything about recalls so I have no idea how, or if, those affected the ratings.

So tell me, who do you think is gonna' be the first person to go and post that info over on any Beemer forums? :))

Not me. They are welcome to their little bubble.

I've read all the excuses. They seem to like the drama of the latest fix or tweak or recall. Different strokes.

But I must say, when I first stated riding on the road it was Harley that left a trail of parts and dead bikes behind. They were also the first ones to tell you to get stuffed if I stopped to see if I could help.

Triumph was the smell of burning oil in the air, BMW riders at that stage just seemed to appear occasionally in bug splatted faded outfits, on dirty bikes eat and ride off again. Never saw one on the side of the road. That impression did stick with me. The sensible solid and reliable thing. But when I was ready to jump to a "old farts bike" I kept getting complaints from BMW owners about problems. 75% problems in a sample of 4. That's when I decided to do "extensive reading".

How things have changed.

I think only Bonnevilles are made in India. My Street Triple was made in the UK.

So glad I made the switch from the R1200GS to the S10.

I made the switch from Kawasuki to Yamaha for no particular quality reasons. BUT until BMW fixes their GS quality issues, I will just chuckle inside whenever I meet one on the road.

Speaking specifically on the Super Tenere, I have been riding mine since 2010. I commute everyday. All I have replaced so far is the switch that controls the tail light when I depress the brake. It is a super reliable bike. ::012::

What about all the leaking fork seals, the leaking final drives , the need for a reflash. the up-grade to the poor suspension front and rear, the loose spokes, the lost spokes, the leaking fuel pump seal, the crap side panniers with the useless locking system, the cooked headlight wiring harness, . etc, etc, and that is only on this forum. Methinks "CONSPIRACY"

AFAIK Triumphs are made in Thailand and not India.

I highly doubt CR is lenient on the Yamaha brand, if you're serious about the word conspiracy. Or, maybe it was meant to be sarcastic? ;) Forums house the majority of folks who post/read only to find answers to problems like you mentioned. Rest assured, all the things that are commonly deemed to be bad/dysfunctional/poor design on a forum are a small percentage of folks who ride an S10. There are way more S10 owners who probably don't even know this site exists...

I don't think a reflash, suspension, "crap" panniers are indications of any quality issues at all. From what I've read as long as you blue loctite the locks on the luggage and graphite the internal mechanisms they work fine. Flash is probably the last mod in a long line of other fuel management mods you should do first. Front suspension is pretty damn solid, the rear is simply undersprung for most and lacks a compression adjustment. Most folks probably don't even notice that... Loose spokes are part of a normal maintenance check, so if you stay on top of it it becomes a rare issue, which nullifies lost spokes. Leaking fork seals happen to any bike if you don't clean your fork sliders or regularly use a wiper to get the dirt underneath if you're a hardcore offrider. Leaking final drives I've only seen a handful of times be mentioned on the forum and its hard to decipher if it's assembly lube finally weeping out from the seals or an actual leak. Fuel pump seal was a recalled item as was the rear luggage rack...

The more I type the more I hope you meant to be sarcastic, at least I hope?

Solid response. I cannot add more. Depending on individual riding, the various stuff mentions will break. But in general the S10 is very good quality.
