Why in God's name would anyone spend a penny at REI?

I see it all over this board. REI hates us. They hate motorized recreation and heavily fund groups that hate us too. If you ride a motorcycle and buy anything from REI, something is wrong with you.

Do you have any proof to back up what you said? If you do, please post the links so we can read for ourselves..

And there is something wrong with preserving wild places?

Or you like wild places, as long as you can ride your bike through them? But there's a point when too many off road vehicles are using the land, and it ceases to be a truly wild place.

It's a conundrum, for sure...

REI's demographics are NOT motorcycle riders, it's hikers and campers, so they are being true to their core customer base, there's some overlap, but just some.

I see no problem with that. I also see no problem shopping there as long as they have a good price and/or availability for what I'm looking for.

I know if I lived out in the country, I wouldn't care for a bunch of dirt bikers flying around everywhere making noise and tearing up my roads... On the S10, I won't be doing much of that anyway, just taking it easy on unpaved roads is a bit different that what hardcore dirt bikes do to trails ...

I fully agree with Mellow that REI is doing nothing more than protecting their customer base. We should be so lucky to have one (or many) of our vendors promoting responsible motorcycle riding in order to protect ALL our rights.

I live and ride in North Georgia and the locals have started campaigns for more regulation, more local law enforcement and forest service enforcement due to our fellow riders that are, in my opinion, being selfish and not respecting the locals in that area.

We should all be considerate and think about how we might feel if we had a parade of bikes with loud pipes or packs of bikes acting like they are doing the Isle of Man race every Sunday morning while church services are going on.

I feel sure if we don’t it won’t be long before we’ll see some unwanted affects that none of us will like.

Sorry, I'm off my soap box, no more from me.

Not for me. My experience with the Sierra Club is that they are the dirtiest player in the environmental religion.

Shop at Aerostich for your camping needs, they have most of what you need.

My wife is in the outdoor apparrel business. She covers only the ma-pa type stores who sell outdoor apparrell. REI to her is competition, and reduces the sales she can generate when an REI pops up or SPorts-Authority or Cabelas. Any mom and pop place throughout the whole USA can service you better most times, and can even order stuff from their represented vendors more often then any big box store can do. People are becoming more afraid to goto smaller stores and don't think any deals can be made. This isn't true!!!
I do understand the rejection towards REI!!!! This "Wilderness Designation" thing is becoming quite the debate in government last couple of years. They want to keep out more than just motorized activity, it is also bicycles, horses in some cases.

Carry-On!!!

Cabelas, or more specifically, the Cabelas Bargain Cave, is my preferred place to shop. I understand REI's viewpoint with respect to their customer base, and don't hold it against them. I get out in the woods as often as I can on foot, two wheels, and four wheels, and often find the loud pipes on dirt bikes and quads to be really obnoxious. I love dirt bikes and quads, and appreciate a nice running engine as much as anyone, but just don't see why all the noise is necessary. I go to the woods for peace and quiet, and I believe in the "Tread Lightly" concept. I think we'd have a lot less trouble keeping riding areas open if the noise were kept down.

I read the links you posted and could not find a good reason for me, not to shop at REI. They are supporting what they believe in and for their customer base.

At least they are putting their money were their mouth is..

If you read the entire list, there are many, many good non profit organizations that help our environment.

Just my opinion..

I'm solidly in the middle on this fight, but I've got to say that inflammatory and polarizing "if you buy anything from REI, something is wrong with you" attitudes don't make for rationale discussion of this complex issue.

::026:: Civil discussion doesn't take place when we start a flame war.
PS: I shop at REI, Touratech and my local non-dealer hole-in-the-wall motorcycle shop. Plus, I am developing parts, as in starting a parts business. Where does that place me on this mythical line of absolute resolution?

This spring wallowa Whitman forest tried to shut down all off road except a very few trails, they were going to shut down 6000 of
The 9000 miles of roads we now have available to use. Those 6000 miles are all prime s10 type roads. Check around I promise you will find this happening on public lands near you. Environmental extremists want nothing short of all motorized recreation removed from all public lands. REI supports this with a lot of money if you want to have access to public lands without walking every inch of the way do not support these kinds of businesses.

::026:: The USFS almost got away with it but a angry mob united and put pressure on local and state officials to put a stop to it for now.

And these businesses often give a wink to the truly lawless fringe like "Earth First" or other terror organizations that burn down construction projects they deem inappropriate or set "clothesline" booby traps on trails, etc. They don't want public land to be public, they want it to be their private "research" project. That said, yes, we all should use maximum discretion when we are in areas with hikers and horses. I HATE loud pipes off-road, they are so unnecessary. "Tread lightly" riding is always good where you use no more throttle than is necessary to hook up and go, minimizing wheel spin. Anyway, over the years, I've found jerks on both sides of the issue but the radical tree-huggers take the cake for action outside the law and for buying influence with government agencies who shut off access first and then endlessly "study" areas with no accountability as a tactic to shut off public access indefinitely. The Sierra Club heads the list of orgs that only see things their way.

Untill the forces that they put their money where there mouth is stuff it in your mouth silencing it, you'll know when that trail you used to ride is now off limits, or that riding area( here in Ca) is now closed because of bogus science,( Asbestos?) not one documented case of asbsestos related illness reported from this area( Clear Creek). The forces behind this are the ones that outfits like REI support. Do not be fooled, the ideas they support will shut you down completely if they had their way. It is real and happening right here in Ca. I support responsible environmental stuardship, but extreme views are killing the offroad scene here.

I support with my dollars the Public Lands For The People, CORVA,(Ca off raod Vehicle) to fight back against extremism. This is a good thread as I notice that the Adventure Riding enthusiasts are who we hear least from it SEEMS when it comes to voices for our offroad oriented sport, unless I am missing something. Sooner or later its the Sierra Clubs Et. that will put some crap through to smog your bikes every other year. They stop at nothing.
