I wish to than each one of you particular EricV and Avec8130 for your patience and schooling me in the mechanics of the CCT. For those of you who posted pictures and explained step-by-step the installation of the CCT than you very much. I can announce joyously ::015:: that I successfully changed mine. New CCT, 2 new gaskets.

The rattle on my S10 was so bad that I noticed the change immediately. Taking out the old unit and installing the new unit was without hassle. But putting back the clutch pan was a bit of nerve wrecking. I realized that my torque spanner was not working. I could see that the alignment of the pan was not right. In the end after the third attempt, I used feel and commonsense as EricV explains above. Thank you everyone. ::012:: ::015:: ::015:: ::015:: ::015::

Yes, that's in the ready-to-install configuration. If you accidentally bump it hard enough you may release/extend the rod (I.e, the tensioner) prematurely. No need to treat it like nitro glycerin, but don't be rough with it.

When it is bolted in place you will then purposefully "bump" it to release the tensioner by whacking the tension chain guide with a screwdriver.
Thank you. The bit I enjoyed was whacking with the screw driver. I noticed immediately that the chain became taut. Even to the feel. I have learnt a lot changing this device. Again thanks to everyone. ::012::

Changed mine. Worked as I hoped it would. Also it is very obvious when it releases after being smacked with screw driver.

I took my motorcycle in to the shop for valve check/adjustment. In the process, the Service Manager noted a "little noise" he felt was CCT. Pulled the old one and, sure enough, it was showing wear. New updated CCT in place with immediate cessation of any CC noise.

2012 S10 with just shy of 30000 miles.

As for the valve, I had two exhaust that were tight and one intake that was tight. All three required shim adjustment.

Just FYI and added info for others.

Any idea what he inspected to say it "was showing wear"? It'd be awesome if there was some criteria we could inspect.

He told me that the CCT teeth showed wear and it was plausible that this could allow the CC to go from tight to loose and back as the tensioner moves back and forth with varying load, etc.

Sounded like the classic example of the teeth being polished and worn down as the tensioner moves back and forth when they shouldn't.

Except the S10 CCT doesn't use "teeth" like ratcheting tensioners you are assuming this is similar to...

I'll assume that I made a presumption as to what he was describing. Attributable to my being out of town for the last two weeks at training. I am supposed to be back in town Thursday afternoon and will get a better, more detailed response from him then. My curiosity is now piqued as to what the issues was. Time to go read the forum on this issue and see what the hubbub is all about.

My bike runs very well. I don't know what other things the old CCT was affecting. But the rattle is completely gone. Now I will turn my attention to the clutch basket.

Good grief, I'm glad I haven't been on here due to my over 1200 hours of overtime plus lots of training. What a lot of forum white noise to wade through for info. ::025:: ::010::

By looking at the pics and the design of our CCT I am going to go out on a limb and say mine probably had a leak down of oil pressure and the worm gear would spin down upon start up and then spin out with oil pressure after start up. Guessing but I can't really imagine any other scenario. Not a whole lot to go on in there otherwise. Whatever the issue, I'm very glad my dealer just handled it and it is all taken care of. Warranty work so no additional charge above the bill for what I was having them do anyway. Now if I can only find some time somewhere, somehow to actually go riding!! Hell, I only have 600 miles on my WR250R that my wife bought me for Christmas last year!! ::016::

And, I still have an Indian Scout on order. I want a simple, jump on and go, different from my norm, fun bike. That thing is beautiful to my eyes though I am still finalizing my decision and am not 100 percent sure I will get it. Guzzi, Ducati, see what Yamaha reveals at EICMA, etc. Choices, choices....

Absolutely!!!! The new2016 Moto Guzzi V7ii has some really nice updates which will improve an already wonderful bike as well. The Griso has always been a bike I liked as well. I have even ridden the HD Ultra Custom and came away very impressed. The wife wants a nice smell the roses two up bike!! It is a really fun time in motorcycling again!!! Especially if you are where I am with my choice flexibility.

Trust me, I know how fortunate I am to have 365/year riding.

Well, I picked up the S10 from the dealer. Unbelievable difference. I never realized how "noisy" it was prior to this update and service. Truly a significant difference.

Unfortunately, I was unable to get details on what was "worn" on the original CCT. I will get that info when I head back up there to pick up my WR250R which is in for service now.

Mine is done, covered under YES. Doggone dealer forgot to call me and this AM it is 26 degrees and I am a wuss. If I can score a ride and if it gets up above freezing and if all that happens before they close I'll go get it. I just hate to put it on the trailer....... It's just so wrong.

Wow, just sifted through 20 pages of this thread....what an emotional roller coaster :)

My CCT is getting noisy at start up and I'm going to change it. In the middle of this thread it was mentioned Yamaha may/is extending coverage on this. Has this been confirmed??

Mine is out of warranty, and I'm fine with changing it myself, but if Yamaha will foot the bill, why not? Just asking because I don't want to look like an idiot when I talk to the dealer, I guess I'd rather look like an idiot in front of you guys

It hasn't gone recall yet, don't think there's a TSB for it yet either. No freebie me thinks.

My bike is about as far out of warrenty as it can get , with over 90,000 miles on it.
Yamaha not only payed for the CCT , they payed for the work to be done.
