I'm going to go ahead and replace mine and pay for it myself, as that is easier than getting the bike to the Yamaha shop, leaving it for a week and trusting their work. As far as tying the chain to the sprocket, I'm not going to get in on the argument as to wether that is necessary or not, but what I'm going to do is use some safety wire and go around the chain on each side of the bottom sprocket and tie it tight right there. This will keep anything from slipping and is a lot easier than pulling the cam cover off. It might not be necessary, but it will only take a couple of minutes to do and darn sure won't hurt anything. @eemsreno -Thanks for taking the time to do the query and post the answer. Should I need to do this again, out of warranty, I'll certainly keep that in mind. I honestly view tying the chain down as over precautionary.

We are all trying to help each other here.

I just installed the CCT in mine and it took Don Of Lodi help to get the darn tensioner rod to go back in so I could lock it in place for installation. Somehow as I was getting ready to install it the tensioner rod got unlocked. After taking the old one apart and look it over I took the new one apart and as Don asked do I have any Anti-Seize? Well with the Anti-Seize I put a small amount on the screw that screws into the tensioner rod and it worked. After about 2 or more hours I got the tensioner rod back down like it should be and locked. All is good now and I didn't use any safety wire or wire ties. When I removed the CCT I watched the chain real close and didn't see any movement at all.

He also said that Yamaha is covering this 2012 and 2013 CCT for the next 5 years [Only if it rattles] so you do not need to be in a rush to have this fix done.

And any Shop can call RTA Ashley and feel free to ask him if these are his exact words.
eemsreno, would you mind PMing me the contact number for Ashley so I can give it to my local dealer? I just had my service manager (who is a close friend of mine at Greater Motorsports West Palm Beach) call Mother Yamaha after I read him what Ashley told you. Yamaha told him they knew nothing of the sort and unless a YES was purchased I was SOL.
Thanks, Scott

I am done arguing about how to go about this but I will make a common sense suggestion if you are not going to do it the way eemsreno suggests. If you are going to wire the cam chain at the base, I would strongly suggest you do it around the chain in the front but around the tensioner rub block instead of the rear of the chain. In all likelihood, if you do it that way, the tension should remain almost the same even with the tensioner removed. The way you are planning to do it will put back pressure on the rubbing block, and although it may keep the chain intact, it could prematurely release the new tensioner before it is fully secured. We are in the Midwestern Region here.
He would just have to ask to talk to Ashley from the Mid region

Wow! Amazing Yamaha is stepping up and covering them 5 years.

I've already paid for mine and installed it, wonder if they would refund?

AC, have your local dealership call their Tech Support and see if they can find out what has been stated by eemsreno by his Midwestern rep. I had my local Dealership call what "I assumed" would be the same place all Dealerships would call, and they were told a different story.

In the FJR world, Yamaha paid for a LOT of beyond-warranty engine head removals to replace valve seats in "tickers," and top box fixes, etc. When people bitch about Yamaha, these are the actual actions taken by Yamaha that I remember. I also know that it was Yamaha who went to NHTSA to start a recall on one of their one bikes! (But they historically will not refund if already done.)

Just like BMW with their rear drive issues on the older GS's and what we now hear on the newer bikes, right? (Doesn't count the new RT shock problem, in which they really have done right.)
::)
Or Hardley with their cam bushing problems, right?
???

eemsreno, thanks for posting the info from Yamaha.

RIVA, I'm OK with the debate, my goal as a moderator here is to keep the debate civil and on track, and eliminate any "antagonistic" posts.

Don in Lodi, I agree, where are the pics? :)

Had mine replaced a few days before a coast to coast and back run, 8500 and some odd miles worth. No more rattle, so nice. 8)

I am lucky that my cam chain didn't jump with the noise that it was making. I can now say after installing the new cct that this is a major improvement. If it weren't for the decompression mechanism, which is mounted in there pretty damn loose, this would be one of the quietest motors I have ever owned. Clutch basket switched at same time, so this also helps.

Just had my dealer tell me that they will replace the CCT with the upgraded version and cover it under warranty. I dropped it off for the 26k mile service and some other things.

I had what I deemed an excessive amount of noise, technician agreed.
