2005 KLR 650 --> 685 --> 705 --> 685
Purchased my KLR in April 2006 and have enjoyed since. Added a ton of farkles. The upgrade to 685 was a huge improvement. Upgraded to 705 and did not like it. Sold the 705 and went back to the 685. The good memories will keep me from selling this KLR.

2012 Super Tenere --> 2015 Super Tenere ES
From Day1 (8/2011) I did not know if I liked the Tenere. Two weeks later I added the CJM and I knew it was a keeper. 52,200 miles later (2/2015) the cam chain tensioner failed. Engine was rebuilt via warranty. Traded it in on a 2015 ES. Liked this Tenere from the first day. Seems that Yamaha has been listening repaired/upgraded most of the customer complaints. The electronic suspension is better than I could have ever guessed. Handles much better than the standard suspension. The engines power band makes it easier to ride.

I do... My street riding started in '06 with a Ninja 650.

In '08 I wanted to get something to do more adventures on, so I got the '08 KLR

This past April, I sold the Ninja 650, kept the KLR and bought the Super Tenere.

The Ninja's seating position just didn't work for me anymore. I cramped up after 1 hour or so of riding. I wanted something that I could put miles on and not be miserable on. The Super Tenere is more of a replacement for the KLR for me, but honestly, I find myself riding the KLR very little now too. I really don't have a good reason to keep the KLR around as the Super Tenere will probably go anywhere I'd take the KLR, and do the highway bits much better. The KLR is really going to become my backup bike and one to let my a few select friends ride that don't have an ADV type bike. The Super Tenere just does everything I'd do on the KLR and some things better.

Got both, loved the KLR till some seat time on the Tenere. I agree with Bryce, the Tenere will do everything the KLR will do, but the highway is so much better on the Tenere.

Bought mine the same time, upgraded to 685, and it's great. Main reason to keep it now is for my son, and to allow me off road a bit rougher stuff

2012 Super Tenere

I just bought my tenere in July, I managed to put 3000 miles in a couple of weeks

I like it. I'll probably never do anything more than FS roads on it though.

Me too.

Just bought the ST - 600 mile service tomorrow, first big trip starts Fri. Bought to replace my V-Strom 1000 as a european tourer as wanted ABS.

Have a new KLR in Cape Town. My brother is breaking it in before i ride it from Cape Town back to the Uk next summer. Bought for its bullet proof reputation, 3rd world repairability, 50:50 on/off road bias and low price. The ST would be too heavy i think for my Africa trip.

I have an '01 KLR and a '14ES. I love the ST but my KLR isn't going anywhere. The KLR is currently running D606's and has become my short-trip/runabout/beater bike.
The ST is my highway machine for now. I know there are other, presumably better, choices for a 90-95% street bike but I'm tall and nothing else fits me as well. I've ridden local gravel roads, but nothing more challenging. For now, I have no plans to bash my ST around off-road. Maybe, once I install an ACD skid plate, I will change my mind.

I don't have both now but went from a 2013 KLR to a 2012 Super Tenere. The KLR was my first motorcycle, got it 2 years ago Apriil. I used it for your typical dual sport riding. After riding with a group here in Denver I liked it but wanted more power. Riding the highways on the way to the trails is where the KLR was really deficient.

I began poking around, learning etc and came across the Super Tenere. In fact at long term review thread on this forum is what got me to pull the trigger when I saw a Craig's list add for a 2012 will all the farkles I need for dual sport touring with under 4K miles. Long story short I picked it up a year ago June and have been dual sport riding it since then. It will go nearly everywhere the KLR will go. Now that I'm more used to it and have come along with my riding learning curve I am thinking of trying a couple of trails that were a bit dicey on the KLR. Additionally after help from a couple members here (the Denver Usual Suspects) and a thread here by one of them on setting suspension the beast really handles great on curvy pavement. Due to my weight I have to max out the rear preload, that makes it a bit rough on rocky trails, those with lose rock give me the most trouble. It's a great bike but think I'm going to drop the coin on suspension upgrades this winter.

Either way, after doing the COBDR I would like to get out for at least a weekend camping trip before winter hits the mountains west of Denver.

I had a couple KLR's, in fact that is what sold me on the S10, the seating position was very similar which I always found to be quite comfortable. Really tho the S10 is so flexible, I'm not sure I need a thumper anymore. What the S10 can't handle the Ural can and it never falls down :)

I'm lucky enough to own both. I've owned a number of KLRs and seem to have a weird love affair with that machine. My current is a bone stock green NE. Since putting some miles on my S10, I long for the KLR less and less. At the moment I'm considering swapping the KLR for something more sport oriented. The S10 is such a great bike.

This is my stable. Bought my KLR in March bought the s10 in July. Love the KLR. But its not a long distance bike. I can't cruise on it on the highway. I tried. Bought a cee baily to make it work ended up getting blown all over the place. Sold the cee baily. Now it's just a heavy dirt bike with te 63s on it. Considering doing the TET south on it in the spring... Would also really like to use the S10 for that trip...

My $0.02... most definitely take the Tenere on the TET.

The KLR and Tenere - in my seasoned opinion - fill virtually the same niche. I came to the Tenere from the KLR and actually owned both for s short while. At that time, I tried to make the KLR into a dirt bike and failed miserably. The thing is just a dog offroad until you spend a small fortune tricking it out and then it SUCKS on the road. I gave up and tossed all that time and money towards a WR250R after selling the KLR. Maybe do the same with that DR you have in the background.

While the Tenere probably outweighs the KLR by 150-200 lbs... it is FAR BETTER offroad than the KLR in my opinion. This, of course, assumes that you have the Tenere properly setup with knobbies, skidplate, crash bars, no boxes, and a willingness to let her get dirty and dropped. The low center of gravity, the 270deg engine, adj TC and good ABS, suspension, and riding position all make it TBDBITW. Don't get me wrong... I loved my KLR and have a ton of respect for the bike. It is just that I believe that all the time, effort, and cash it would take to polish that turd enough to make it into a good offroad machine would be better spent acquiring a purpose built machine.

Of course there are some (many) here that think I am crazy - so caveat emptor!!

Your 250 is certainly a better off-road bike and obviously a better companion to your S10, however, in no way is the s10 a better off-road bike than an KLR. Trust me the KLR is no dirt bike either. I take my S10 where my Ducati doesn't belong. Take my KLR where the S10 doesn't belong and I take dirt bike where my KLR doesn't belong.

:D

You haven't met TrikePilot, eeemsreno, Dirt_Dad, or some of the others here who regularly use their Super Tenere as The World's Biggest Dirt Bike (TWBDB). There is enough overlap between how well the KLR and Tenere do when off road, that the Tenere brings strengths which can make it go places most people would not recognize or want to go, even on a KLR. To go with the attitude and lots of experience, these guys are in pretty good shape.

And to keep going there are the 250-650 enduros (& 690 KTM) which are much better than the KLR.

Well let's say I owned a KLR.....
I bought a 02 with 1950 miles on it back in Oct of 06. I had a Valkyrie Interstate at the time and kept wondering where all the dirt roads went to while riding in the hills of Arkansas.
I joined in with KLRWorld.com when it first started and began to farkle the KLR. A few months later I become one of the moderators on that site and enjoyed many hours of dealing with all that goes on with the KLR. Moab trips and local dual sport rides, I just couldn't get enough.
The Valkyrie got sold and I bought a DL650 and changed it to my liking. Nice day trips were in order for it and it was a very smooth riding bike but the chain drive.....I liked the shaft drive of a road bike.
Then came the 03 KLX450 when I got to thinking the KLR was a little heavy for some of the trails I started riding and I got neck deep in farkles for it. All the time the KLR sat in the shop waiting patiently for me to fire her up and go for a ride. It never failed to start or let me down.
Then in 2010 I got the road riding bug again and the DL650 just wasn't doing it for me, so a 05 R1200GS showed up in the shop on my birthday. Trips to east TN and a good long 3300 mile trip to CO and back was really nice. I learned quite a lot of the ins and outs of the GS and also became leery of the quirks and thoughts of rear end failure always had me thinking.
December of 2010 rolled around and the I joined up here when the Tenere flashed upon the computer screen one evening. "Now there's my next bike" I though to myself. 6 speed, shaft drive, big tank, ergos for a tall man...yep.
Still the KLR was in the shop, couldn't part with her, a faithful steed. A job and location change left me with little room in the new house's garage so the BMW had to go. It was a good ride for 4+ years....The KLR was my only ride, but on my way to work one morning out front of the local Yamaha shop sat a gleaming used 13 Tenere with bags and a larger windshield! Hmm! I might even sell out on the KLR for that one, if the price was right, it was and even more so when I checked again a week later and they dropped it $500.
So out the door went the KLR with a whoosh and in came the S10 and I never looked back. ::001::
I've got plenty of pictures of the KLR if I want to reminisce, 9 years of memories and pics.

Yep, it was me. Seems like there are quite a few I know on here that have bought a S10. Great minds think alike. ;)
