I'm not sure that keeping the aux fuel containers empty completely removes the hazard unless you actually make sure they're "totally dry" empty. Gasoline fumes are extremely explosive and a few ounces of residual fuel sloshing around in the bottom of a rotopax could be exactly what is needed for the container to be at the optimal mix for an explosion.

I don't think you need to go crazy worrying about safety, but sticking those packs on the side of the engine, down near the ground at one of the "first strike" points in an accident just strikes me as ill-advised, whether they routinely used or not.

Ok thanks for the input guys. What seemed like a good idea at the time may not have been as great as first thought! I'll look at other options... I know for most of the places I'm heading, 1 gallon extra will be enough. I believe there are some stretches (Chile/Bolivia) where two gallons might be needed. If I end up only carrying one rotopax, for those long stretches I may just pick up another one or two gallon gas container and strap on top of everything, then ditch it when not needed.

FYI Nick Sanders did his record ride with a 5 gallon (I think) jerry can strapped to the pillion seat...

Hello,
I understand people’s concerns about carrying extra fuel but if you’re out there pushing the limit one of the first limits you’re going to bump into with the Super Tenere along with any other motorcycle is range. As stated earlier I’m planning on the Trans Labrador Highway next year and one of the first runs is from Baie Comeau, Quebec to Labrador City, Labrador which is approx. 361 miles. I’ve been reading claims of up to 60 miles per gallon with the Tenere but when you’re out in the middle of nowhere you need some extra insurance. My first thought was the Roto Pax but after getting input on this forum the Peg Packer may be a better alternative if it will fit the Tenere. It would be lower and closer to the CG and more protective from impacts. I’m going to ask the manufacture is it will fit the Tenere and if not do they have plans to make it happen. I’ll advise once I hear.
Later,
Norm

Hey, Norm .... worse comes to worst .... I have a small, 5 L box shaped Scepter plastic fuel can that can be strapped on just about anywhere. It is a commercially available product .... not too elegant but would serve you well, especially if you didn't need one often. R

I just had a closer look and apparently this particular product is NOT available in the U. S. You can pick one up as soon as you cross the border I guess. I could always mail you one but would end up costing you a fair bit I expect. R

Hi REM,
Thanks for the input, here we go again with those EPA fanatics! Part of this trip will include camping, some of which will be wilderness camping. I've order my copy of "How to Shit In The Woods" by Kathleen Meyer so I don't upset the Canadian version of the EPA. So most of my back seat will be occupied by my camping gear, tent etc. So I am looking for something that will be mounted low and with minimal crash impact exposure. The Peg "Packer", :)) may be the answer.
Later,
Norm

10-4, let me know if you change your mind. You will find the Canadian Wilderness considerably less regulated, I think. Not sure about eastern Canada, but in western and NW Canada, you can fertilize just about anywhere you want to. No worries. R

I have the factory cases and got to messing around with my one gallon rotopax cell between trick-or-treaters last night. The one gallon cell is 9.5 x 13.25 x 3 inches. The top and outer sides are obvious places to mount. The front and back of the case would require some fabrication due to the handles, as in extending the mounting bracket. Working with elizilla’s inner sidewall idea from an earlier post, the cell would mount easily on the inside outer wall of the right case like in the photo. However, while there’s a lot of clearance to the tire, the top of the brake caliper would clear way too close upon compression imo and the forward edge of the cell is only eight inches directly above the swing arm. If the suspension travel at the axle is 7.5 inches, I think it makes contact that further forward.

I personally came away from this experiment hating the fuel cell mounted anywhere on the cases. Trevor has a photo of a one gallon rotopax on the spare rack. I think I like that the best.

A guy I travelled with to nova scotia used a 1 gallon jerry can in his side case. He consistently ran out of gas before everyone else and he used it a couple of times on the trip. Worked well.

I will take you up on that very generous offer! But how can we be assured they will have the correct shade of blue paint in a shaker can?
