08/27/22 Ride into Pierson Park Colorado on FS119 and views of the wash out that occurred during the 2013 flood. The road is now formally closed at the washout. General Location is about 10 miles south of Estes Park.

This section was tricky riding back up.

Pano of Pierson Park. Twin Sister Peaks on right and the start of the flood area in the saddle between the peaks. FS119 lower right.

With Tenere and center of the photo you can see the upper section of the flood wash. The lower rock out cropping to right of wash is in a subsequent photo to give you and idea of my position.

Once I got to the closed section of the road I hiked into the wash are where the road was. This is looking west up toward the beginning giving idea of width, depth and magnitude. You can literally step across this creek lower right.

Been something to witness eh?

Looking East toward down the valley. Purdy shore this water ends up first in the Little Thompson drainage then The Big Thompson river .

Foot Trail across the wash area.

I doubt the FS has the resources to ever open this road again. Go here on a weekday and I venture you would not encounter another person. The Weather? Typical gorgeous late August Colorado day with mid 70s temps.

Is that just a Samsung tablet running a gps app? The real estate on that screen is massive! Bet I wouldn't struggle with that. What software?

Yup. That's a Samsung Tab Active 2 that I got used for around $100 bucks in a mount that was around $20, with a magnetic charging cable. In the picture I'm using OsmAnd+ as my nav app. I also use Guru Pro for nav and Car Home Ultra as my home screen. You can't tell from the picture, but I have tunes playing into my BT earbuds as well. Both nav apps can be used either online or offline with downloaded maps and can record you track as you ride. This has been a great set up for an old guy with not the greatest vision. I also carry a Kyocera DuraForce Pro running identical software as back up. 20210529_110122_HDR.jpg20210529_110104.jpg20201231_135529_(1).jpg

That's a great setup. I'm going to start looking for a used tablet now. My Garmin Nuvi is designed for cars. It's too small and only does street navigation; plus it's a real pain to try to plot routes and put in way points. Your setup looks about prefect.

Those roads look like our driveways. As a matter of fact, with the exception of the waterfall, that terrain is similar to this area.

Cap'n Ron and I went for one last ride before he left to head for home.
We included another good friend of ours, my former next-door neighbor Luke.
I rode my FJ1200, Cap'n Ron rode my Super-Tenere, and Luke rode his R-1.

We ended up doing a 200-mile loop, with a stop at Rudy's for BBQ and then a quick stop at "Garden of the Gods" for a couple pictures.
Was an excellent day to be out for a ride!

That would be too close to Pikes Peak for me to pass it up. I remember growing up, dad had to take us up on a family vacation.
