Where I live there are lots of gravel roads . I don’t know for sure but probably more miles of gravel roads than paved roads. I learned to ride and drive on mostly gravel roads. My first time driving a pickup truck I was about 12 years old and drove a 1953 Chevrolet in a field helping my Dad make fence for cow pasture .

Do you have mostly asphalt everywhere in America?
I would say there is almost always a paved alternative/choice. My ride included only a few miles of very well graded dirt, a Goldwing would not have had any difficulty! Most mapping programs will default to paved roads but with my Zumo 550's avoidance of unpaved roads unchecked, it will sometimes route me over dirt/gravel roads based on fastest time or shortest distance priorities selected.

Yesterdays meandering ride from SE Iowa home to Illinois via Galesburg and the Illinois river. Turned a 4 hr commute into a 8 hr joy ride.

Random gravel road in Iowa

A lake community in East Galesburg

Snake Den Road. Looked like wet clay. I took a pass with my worn out tires and luggage. I will be back!

Toulon town square

One of my favorite little shaded trails. This gem is actually a stones throw from the I180 interstate, but you can't even see it.

Rode down into Missouri this morning.

Was having a great ride till I rode down a lane that ended at the Salt River.
I noticed a dead kitten in the parking area, I got out my coffee and then noticed another kitten in the grass. I walked over to it and nudged it with the toe of my boot. It couldn't even lift it's head off the ground it was shivering so bad. So I picked it up and put it in the sun while I drank some coffee.
After a while it wouldn't leave me alone.

Then I heard another kitten cry so over in the tall weeds I found him, he was badly hurt. I packed them both into a back pack and laid them on top of my tank bag. I stopped first at a sheriffs office and he didn't want anything to do with them, He said just take them back to the river. So I spotted a Vet clinic and they took them. She said they could find a home for the one but didn't sound to promising for helping the hurt one.

The older I get, the more I like animals; dogs are my favorite. They don't lie, cheat, or steal . . . . for the sole purpose of lyin' cheatin', or stealin'.
