I did not have a skid plate but I should. I got away with no skid plate for 96,000 miles. The parts are $101 shipped, but if they are delayed I'll JB weld it for now.

I installed a 3M protection film under the seat on the tank. Bike has only 150km and the paint was already starting to wear as there's a perfect space between the seat and tank to collect sand. My Africa Twin has 30000km on it and tank is still like new under the seat, but Honda put some strips where the seat would otherwise rub against the tank. If you haven't checked yet, you might want to have a look (maybe on some years, Yamaha actually added a protective film there) 
Since I’ve got time in abundance, decided it’s the moment to treat her well.

Yes, good eye. They are the Mitas E-07+ and the dakar version on the rear.

Life is good when sunset is now at 19h....Enjoying a little ride after work. Even if it was -3C, it was sunny and roads we're dry and free of snow and ice for once! Already 200km on the bike so far...and let's just say I haven't had the best of weathers yet hehe

There are no element covers nationwide. Backordered for months. So I had it welded. Good to go.

Maybe with a black grylon plate, you could avoid the risk, you can hit it, scratch it, and that grilon plate will always be there, unalterable
