My friend had two Nalgene bottles bouncing around in his Givi topcase on his F750GS last weekend, and they came our well "sanded". He was fearing he would be in the doghouse since one was a recent souvenir his wife had purchased ;D

Wiped it down and covered it up after Day 1 of 8.

Hot beautiful weather.

Short day of 230 miles.

Installed my first farkle, a Cal Sci medium windshield. I did ride to work this morning and it worked amazing! I may even be able to drop it down a notch.

Started the process of setting up the foam in the top case to efficiently, safely, and quietly carry what I want to have with me. Going to take a while before I've got it all figured out, but letting stuff slam around back there was not working for me.

Rode it to Thruxton race circuit (UK) to watch practice and qualifying for the British Superbike races tomorrow. Good ride there, great days viewing and an even better ride back home, no doubt slightly influenced by those nutters flying round the track ???

Recently I tried the two helmet, no luggage setting with standard damping and found that it rides much better for me on fast, unpaved toads.
I followed Fred's lead today and went to two helmets. Set the soft to -3, medium 0, hard +3. Definitely much better than anything I tried last week in the fast unpaved stuff. Hard +3 was a significant improvement over the softer settings. Good suggestion Fred. ::008::

Changed the oil today, new 10-40 Amsoil and filter. You all have probably done this 100's of times. But here is what I am excited about: I have the Altrider skid plate that I really don't want to remove every time I change the oil. So, with a little trepidation I began the process. Cue the dancing minions: the oil filter came out easy -- zero problems! Of course, there were a few bugs to work out, like how do I unscrew the old filter? I tried a tool from Motion Pro, but it did not work. Finally resorted to large and violent looking filter remover pliers. They worked, but really bent up the outside of the old filter. Next issue: how to prevent the oil pouring out all over the inside of the skid plate? I bought some oil absorbent pads from an auto parts store, then cut to shape for inside the plate. Voila! A mostly perfect solution to the messy problem. The pads absorbed most of the oil that leaked out from the old filter. The rest was easy to wipe up. The new filter went in easy, and I then hand-tightened, then used a Pennzoil tool that is a plastic handle with a reinforced rubber strap that tightens the filter in small increments. Easy! I am seriously relieved that I don't have to remove the skid plate! ::015:: Little details: the oil drains out of the two drain holes in the skid plate well. However, the rear drain hole allows perfect placement of a socket and ratchet, but the oil drains onto the plate and not out the hole cleanly. The front drain hole does not allow a socket and ratchet to reach the drain bolt, but the oil does drain out of the hole in the plate perfectly. Not a big deal, I'll just need to buy a set of swivel-sockets. Always something! For anyone looking for a good skid plate, that will allow an oil and filter change without needing to remove the skid plate, look into buying the Altrider plate. But wait! There's more! Tomatocity gave me a tip that has proved very helpful for pouring in the exact right amount of oil without guess work. Buy a medium plastic measuring cup, most dealers still sell them for customers that still work with premix for two strokes. Free marriage advice: DON"T use one of your wife's kitchen measuring cups! From a four quart jug (or one quart) of fresh oil, pour off into the measuring cup 13.12 ounces, then simply pour all the rest into the engine. Perfect amount! I pour the excess new oil into a spare one quart bottle of Amsoil, and then pour the old oil into the four quart jug I just poured into the engine. Later I will take the old oil to a recycler. Tomorrow I go back to the dealer for the metal "gaskets" washers that Yamaha calls for everytime you change the rear gear lube. That will be tomorrow's chore.

Changed the oil and filter. Oh, and installed new '14 clutch basket, new friction plates, steels and diaphragm spring, thanks koinz for his concise write up.

I've fitted the Givi Trekker outback 42L top case. I really like the look and quality of this unit and I don't think it's any heavier than a similar plastic case. One thing is I've noticed a rattle running across the lane dividing "botts dots". Wonder where that's coming from. I used the Givi SRA2101 mounting plate. I could not get the box to latch onto the rack using the taller rubber bumpers recommended in the installation instructions - too much force required, so I reinstalled the lower profile bumpers that were originally on the mounting plate. It doesn't move around and the lower profile bumpers are visibly compressed. Don't think this is the source of the rattle.

I also applied the desert nomad tank protector which looks pretty cool.

I also have the Givi outback top box, and agree that it is a great box.

I also experience the rattle that you refer to and think that it originates from the two top/side strapping bars as they seem loose in their fittings.

I'm wondering if I apply a small amount of silicone to the areas where the bars enter their securing brackets, if that will that sort out the problem....the rattle is quite noticeable

BTW I have used the higher profile buffers on the mounting plate

Changed the rear drive lube Sunday evening, used Maxima racing synthetic 75-90. Had to be creative to find a way to get the new lube in the rear drive unit. Anyone have a way to do this cleanly and efficiently?
