You park the bike with ABS and traction control and keep riding the TDM? ???
Yes, the TDM is .....
a) much much lighter
b) 10 years old, therefore I won't cry as much if I drop it
c) 10 years old, therefore I won't cry as much at the effects of the corrosive salt covered roads I have to endure
and
d) if it is really icy or snow the 4wd comes out

Salt is evil. Some places are getting better living from chemistry, it doesn't rot a vehicle away in five years. LOL, twice the price though.

Some people may know I joke around about the,....Yeah really ;D.....the need to have real useful stuff on our bikes.

Forget all this sky hook suspension, 7 way traction control, power windshields etc bla bla bla....

What we really want on our bikes is 20 USB ports, charge points for cameras and video recorders, Cloud synchronization services for the photos so that they are all being uploaded automatically as we sip our brawny man coffees or lick our Liquid Nitrogen chilled Ice Creams made from the milk of only the angriest cows. And that is just the start right? Once thjere is a computer involved the sky is the limit. I might even add an accurate external temperature gauge ???

Right?

Well I thought I might do something about that...

Meet the start of something really ugly...

Queue "Gunfight Music"....

You are looking at a bunch of DC-DC 5V buck converters (95% efficient), 1 computer and a really cool CD for size comparison.

If you don't know what that means time to man up and chow down on some geek speak. ;D

This will be my time filling "WTF have I started", feature creep project with undefined deadlines.

GrahamD, that looks interesting. What are you planning on using the Raspberri Pi for on the bike? And where did you get the DC-DC converters?

China. Is there any other place?

They are expensive. Cost me $14 for ten.

As far as the Raspberry Pi Goes, Ummm..Probably just pissing BMW guys off with fancy display stuff and diagnostics and algorithms. BMW guys just love algorithms.

But first off, just an RSYNC to a server through WiFi or 3G. Plenty of options. Data logging would be good. Once you have an open computer platform on board you know what can happen. An Arduino is sitting next to me right now as well. That's about 1/2 the size of one of those converters.

Maybe just XBMC for camping, Who knows?

Ah!? So you weren't joking when you talked about cloud synchronisation while drinking coffee....

But... You still need to get your photos from the camera to the RPi before the RSYNC, a task that is automated by google when I take a photo with my phone... But for a homemade multifunction centre with weather, GPS data, a few forums etc. all on the same screen... Bummer, now you've got me going....

One thing I am expecting of course is that as soon as I have finished, someone will come out out with exactly the same thing for $20.00 :D

Well I expect that anything will already be out there in one form or another, but not necessarily all in one place with all the inputs you need. Just what you said.

It is also 1/20th the cost of a mobile phone. (so far)

But this will be an open project. So customizable, hackable and with "no liability accepted" Any input appreciated. Code, ideas go for it.

all for the good of the S10 community (first)

Last week some items arrived....

Waiting for a few more bits but here is the start...

Wanted to solve the problem with floods that throw so much light that you end up.

1) Having to switch them off with approaching vehicles.
2) being blinded by the big reflective signs with the amount of light coming back.
3) being able to see Roos, Wambats, etc at the side of the road.

What I wanted was something with a good cutoff. Well I found some projector style torches that will match the Tenere projector headlights.

A few mods to do but I could probably get into some robotics and make them adjustable from the dash with the on board computer/GPS/media centre/data logger/RSYNC device/ bal bla...No not really ;D

Taken at dusk.

1W spot to the left, new gadgets to the right.

Installed lowering links from Ride On ADV, (Thanks Jaxon!), removed the cases and fuel cell, backed the preload all the way off and raised the forks 13mm in the triple trees. Still can use the center stand, with a tad more muscle, and the side stand, though its better with the front wheel turned left. Now to see if the wife will take it out for a ride, and how she likes it compared to her F650GS, that's broken, again.

Yes, I'll be overjoyed to join the ranks of 2 Super Tenere families if it works out that way.

We have a good local Yamaha dealer. The Super Ten is shaft drive and reliable. We've had an unpleasant BMW experience, with the little F650GS2 going steadily down hill after 30k. And we ride 35-40k a year, mostly together.

<small bmw rant snipped>

Good luck. You may want to procure a OEM lower seat before getting her on it. It makes a big difference for my wife.

I pointed out some of the new bike offerings from Honda to my wife. They are lighter and smaller. She asked me about the features and when I said just ABS, she turned up her nose and quickly said, not interested. Not sure I'll ever get my wife off her Tenere.

She has a custom seat on the GS and will get another custom seat for the Tenere if she goes down that path. The lighter/smaller Honda offerings don't really fit our needs. She looked hard at the NT700,, but she said it weighed more than the S10 and it's really underpowered and not very exciting in power delivery. She also has a 30" inseam, though only 5'4". We'd really like shaft drive, at least 1000 cc and ~500 lbs, but no one makes that right now. She'd be all over a test ride on a Honda Cross Tourer, but they didn't bring them in for '13. I wish Honda would make a 1L Africa Twin with shaft drive, and bring it to the US.

Changed the plugs, air filter, drive oil, lube shift and clutch, attempted to fix the sagging boxes and made thanksgiving dinner. Actually, still working on dinner. Got a little 400 mile trip planned for Saturday.

Update - Wife liked the S10. Shopping for another one has commenced. Need to move the bars back a bit, possibly move the pegs a tad, she loved the brakes and the power, had no issues with the CalSci Med windscreen and did better at low speed handling than on her GS. ::014:: ::014:: ::012:: ::012:: ::013:: ::013:: ::015:: ::015::

I have much to be thankful for today. :)
