What GPS Mount Are You Using?

OK, I've never mounted a GPS on one of my bikes, but I think I'm gonna' take the plunge with the Super Tenere... and I don't want to make any mistakes if I can avoid 'em. ;)

So what GPS mount are you using? Why did you pick the one you did? Would you get a different one if you had it to do over again, etc.?

Any thoughts, ideas, and most of all - experiences - with GPS mounts for the S-10 (or even other bikes) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Dallara,

I did not take the plunge yet on the Tenere, but I had a Garmin unit on my VStrom.

This worked great, but it was not a waterproof unit so I just had to pop it out of the mount when it was raining. For the Tenere I plan to purchase the Garmin Nuvi 550. It is waterproof and way cheaper than the motorcycle specific units.

For mounting I have had great success with RAM mounts. Fully adjustable, easy to use, and built tough. Here is a whole kit that is for the Nuvi

THere are also tons more mounting options they have....

It depends what you want your gps for

If you will be doing detailed road riding and rallying your circumstances are different

Two paths for good gps

the locking Touratech mounts with vibration Isolation, or

The low cost ram system, no lock, take gps off bike every time.

Other choice

Off pavement exploration

Your mount needs to be more durable choice one.

Third method

If you are just looking for a hotel or the route to grandma's house a cheap gps not waterproof and a zip lock zip tied to your handle bas will be far cheaper in the long run and you just buy a new unit when it fails for 50 dollars at a clearance centre.. We have a friend who tours europe this way, new cheap gps every trip.

I'm using the handlebar Ram mount that came with my Zumo 550.
It places the GPS in perfect position for reading with my bifocals.

I also use the Ram mount:

GPS sits just below speedo, so it's in line of sight of the road. The mount works great and there's no vibration. I have to remove the GPS when I park, but that's no big deal storing in a case in the side bag (BTW, I use the Nuvi 550...cost $175 and works fine, even with gloves).

Currently I have two mounts, both from touratech, one sits on the handle bars the the other is part of the screen adjuster, the handle bar one is to low for my liking, so I use the anti vibration mount on the screen adjuster mount, works for me.

Don't you have to use the Touratech adjustable windshield mount to use their GPS mount up there above the instruments?

Thanks!

Most probably (since I do have the windshield adjuster)!

If you are free for lunch someday this week, we can meet half-way between Aggieland and Corpus and you have a look ::015:: ::015::!

Hey, TCR...

I can do that, no problem. Sounds like a great idea if you don't mind the ride.

Thanks!

I have a simple Ram ball replacement bar clamp bolt, short Ram arm and Garmin cradle for my 2820 (waterproof, bluetooth). I also have my Sirius radio mounted on a short Ram arm using a U bolt mount on the bar. I used this setup on my KLR and like the GPS closer to me so I don't have to reach far to operate it whilst riding. Also easier for me to focus up close. :)

Fred, which replacement bolt kit did you use? I see the RAM-B-367U on the mount page...

Yes, that is the one I bought. It comes with 3 different length bolts, but I had to use a longer one, since I have 1" bar risers.

$9.95 from GPScity.com

I have a Touratech mount for my 276c Garmin on the topmost WASP windshield bracket. Working pretty good so far.

Sorry, only shot I have of it right now. Look close at the windscreen.... :D

Okay...found a better one.
