Would like to do the first clearance check. Clocked 28K miles on my 13.
Looking for recommendations of a good yamaha dealer or mechanic, who would actually do valve clearance check/work on ST and knows what they doing. Something within say up to 150 miles of NYC in any direction, NY, NJ, Eastern Pa, CT. Someone you have actually worked with not just bought the bike from. Thanks fellas!

In central NJ there is a dealer Action Yamaha and they have a great Tech working there. Have never had work done there but Hans works there and has been working on Japanese bikes for ever! He is one that I would trust my bike to. He used to do some work out of his house and if you PM me I can see if he still does. If not and you decide to go to Action Yamaha just make sure you ask for Hans. (I lived in NJ for the first 40 years and Hans worked on my bikes ::008::)

Thanks guys. This is one of those things that I don't want to do, based on what others have gone through on ST. I do everything on bikes, but the engine work, unless I absolutely have to. Just don't have patience for this, especially when it's 100 degrees in the garage. It would be more harmonious for the world if I just reach out to someone who likes doing this stuff.

if you do it yourself be prepared as this is one of the hardest i have owned to do a valve check and then shimming if needed is a real pita.

Funny but I assumed that from the nearly 3 hours allotted for the process as noted in one of the magazine reviews. I figure if the "experts" need that long a shade tree mechanic would need a full day. While the BMW is a pain at every 6K the process is simple and from I am told by my dealer 80% of the time the check reveals all is OK so not additional work and less than a $100 bill. ::012::

Actually, what's funny is you thinking you can get ANYTHING done at a BMW dealership for under $100. ::025::

Actually I am pretty lucky as I really can get things done at my BMW dealer for very reasonable cost. Yeah ... Odd I know. :D But it really does occur. Oh .... and I can ALWAYS wait for any service I have done and if I prefer can get a loaner bike to go for breakfast while my bike is serviced. ::012:: It is the BMW service and support that has kept me with them and pushed me away from the metric dealers where (my experience only) has been they want you go drop your bike off on Saturday and will call you in a week or 2 when it is done. Oh ... and I schedule my service with a specific tech and having been on BMW since 2000 have only ever had ONE tech wrench on my bike. Odd I know but honestly if I could get that kind of service from a metric dealer I would probably still be on a Yamaha or Honda. I do most minor service myself i.e. oil changes, filter changes, etc. But for things like the 6k valve check and tire changes I go to the dealer. Last tire change at my BMW dealer they has a special for 2 for $35 ! So I got 2 tires mounted and balanced with new valve stems for $35. And yes the tires were priced about what I could get on-line. Honestly if I could get similar service from a local metric dealer I would be there. I had one great experience with Early's Yamaha in Harrisonburg, VA and if I lived there I may very well be riding a Yammie. But have not had good experience with either Honda or Yamaha dealers for the most part. BMW dealers I have used have all been great. Oh ... and I have great experience with 2 or 3 Harley dealers but again that is based SOLEY on my experience and YMMV !! ::013::

Yes they can ... actually filling a tire is $1 per pound at the BMW dealers so at 40 PSI it runs about $40 per tire. I know the local Yamaha dealer is cheaper at $.50 per pound so $20 per tire to fill them . In that case yes Yamaha is a much better deal! ::013::

What ever you do, or where ever you decide to have the work done-------DO NOT have anything done by Desert Valley Powersports, Prosser, WA. I have never seen such irresponsible, incomplete, careless, work done by ANY mechanic!!!!
I am still looking for a responsible, careful, craftsman, to start from the beginning and do the valve adjustment, and check the camshaft timing(which I think the mechanic(?) botched). ::009::
