Re: valve adjust problem

In your photos it looks like the pickup rotor is positioned about 1 tooth counterclockwise from the one in Gregs write up. Were the cam sprocket timing marks horizontal when you took that picture? Could you be off a tooth on the crank sprocket?

Re: valve adjust problem

okay, started out by checking out how everything looked with all my marks lined up again. Same old same old. Everything lined up and the timing marks on the backside of the sprockets were basically lined up with the case of the engine. One was a hair high, one was a hair low. Turning the engine just a hair would have straightened them out. Good so far.

Then I went back to the manual and used the valve check procedure to go to cyclinder #1. Turned the engine till K met the case mark. Lobes were not right so I turned it 360 back to K and the lobes were now as pictured in the manual.

I turned the engine the 71 degrees until T now was lined up with the case mark.

Intake Cam up

Exhaust Cam up

Timing mark on back of intake cam isNOT in the correct place. I am pretty sure I could make out the mark on the exhaust cam sprocket but it was pretty low. It look as if it would be lined up with the top of the case if the engine was rotated to the point where the intake mark would also be lined up.

I also do not see the hole in the cam or other marks that Duonce is asking me to show.

So that is the problem?
I'm digging through the manual. There is definitely a dimple on the camshaft that is supposed to line up with a dimple on the cam cap when everything is lined up.

I believe the tech orientation guide has some good tips. Need to find that too.

Turn the motor back to where K lines up with egde, the cam bearing cap closest to the sprocket on the intake has a line on it, there is a small hole mark on the cam shaft, they should line up. No hole then the cam is 180 out

went out and turned the motor a bit until I saw a hole come around on the intake shaft. There was a mark, a line on the cam cap. I stopped there.

K is now lined up with the mark on the engine case and the timing marks on the back side of the cam sprockets are where they should be.

Darn. Your cams appear timed properly. LOL

I was just hoping we had found the smoking gun.

I will go redo that since I was looking for the whole instead of the k mark. I could have turned it 360.

Now check the alignment of the exhaust cam, there is a mark on the sprocket that should line up with the cylinder head surface

Yes, you have to make sure you stay on the #1 firing mark, which is the where 2 fires at 70 degrees, then the holes have to line up

For anyone wondering what they are talking about, you can see the hole here:

Thanks Jaeger, it would be a good idea for anyone doing this in the future to mark the exhaust cam and bearing cap before taking apart, making alignment much easier to see

Some of these post may be overlapping in time.

On the k mark, no hole in cam, no marks on the back of the exhaust sprocket lining up with the top of the head surface.
