Re: valve adjust problem

Ok, your write up shows them on the bike still, that's why I ask.

Greg, Just read your doc. very nicely done. Did you need to remove your altrider bar on the right side? I know you can get the side cover off without removing it.....and I assume you disconnected your battery?
Never touched the battery. i have to think about the crash bars...looking at the pics, I left the givi bars on. I did remove the center bar (a nut holds them down on each crash bar.
If you look closely I tied the wire loom out of the way. You need to carefully cut throught the tape that holds the main bundle together. Once you're re-assembling, I used some small tie wraps to re-secure the wire loom to the provided mount.
yamaha also points to taking the steel lines out of the way. That helped a bit too.

next go round, I will have that mother clean as clean can be, since that was the only thing that threw me for a loop

With the service bulletin, and knowledge gained from the first valve adj. the second one should be painless. 2 yrs away still

Bingo!

The new shim should have been 9.48mm in diameter, it was actually 9.55mm in diameter and did not seat correctly. Pulled out a different 1.85 shim and it plopped right in.

Sure was a lot of swearing over .07mm

Not going to fly the mission accomplished banner until it is running but I am feeling pretty good at the moment.
good job man! I make the same mistake of trusting the damn shim kits. apparently yammy sells the shims in 0.01 increments. that's the route I will go next if I need them adjusted. But, having set all of mine down the middle (or as close as I can) I don't think i'll need to touch them. Here's hoping

Pretty sure it is 0.05mm increments.

the usual kits that you can get on line usually span in 0.05.
when Red cat was doing his valves he went down to the local dealer and bought them in 0.01 increments.

But don't shoot the messenger

Either will be sufficient to get the bike within tolerance.

I think you are mixing mm and inches. The standard sizes are in increments of .05mm or .002 inches. Half sizes are in increments of .0025mm or .001 inches.......I think ::008::

The shim kits like Hotcams come in standard sizes, I buy half sizes from Jake Wilson.com.

Re: valve adjust problem

Well, she is all back together but I still haven't heard it run.

The battery was stone dead and seems to be toast. I have charged it three times but can't get the bike to start. It all sounds normal and it tries. It starts for just a second or two and dies. I don't get too many tries before the battery is dead.

It was apart for more than a month and while it was in pieces I emptied the tank and had it painted, had the ecu flashed, valves of course and added some farkles.

I am hoping that a new battery will fix it. Almost hit it with a little starting fluid but didn't.

Well, brand new battery and still can't get it to start. Sounds like it wants to and even will stumble for a second but won't actually start. ::010::
It sounds like you are experiencing the dreaded "hard start" issue. If your battery is fresh, try WOT while starting. If no start, remove the fuse from the FI and turn the engine over to clear the flooded condition. Good luck.

On one of the S10's that my dealer did the same thing happened. I was there when he was having the start problem and told them about the hard start issue and coached the tech on the WOT deal and even the pull the EFI fuse deal. Still wouldn't start. The tech then decided to go back and check the cam timing and found a problem. His theory is that when tightening down the bearing? caps on the cams, it had jumped a tooth. He reset the cam timing and it started right up. That's about as close as I can explain what he told me that he found. He had zip tied the cam chain to the sprocket when he started but I guess there is a time when retightening everything when that zip tie is removed and that is when it jumped a tooth. This tech had done 2 other S10's without problems, but it happened on this one.

Doubt 1 tooth would. But I'm guessing.

Re: valve adjust problem

It didn't start with it out 1 tooth. After the tech got it correct, it started right up with no problem, so it didn't hurt the valves.

Re: valve adjust problem

Ouch, I really don't think that is the case but I will be pulling it apart again to verify tomorrow.

New battery, still won't start. Did the WOT and pulling the fuse etc.

Feeling a little sick about the entire thing so I am taking a break from it.

Any other thoughts? Do I have to enter diagnostic mode to see if there are any faults or will I be notified on the display at start up?

Did you replace the spark plugs while doing the adjustment? Odd that it would briefly run, then spit and sputter and now nuthin'. Before yanking the valve cover off to check timing/ valve clearance, check for good spark.

Re: valve adjust problem

it's possible it jumped a tooth. I marked the intake and exhaust camshft, and their appropriate sopts on the cam chain. Also a the bottom I tie wrapped the living daylights out of the chain, to the sprocket.
When re-tightening the intake cam, if the chain and intake sprocket are not tie wrapped together, it will skip a tooth.

Also, are your high tension cables going to the right spark plugs? Not sure if that may cause things to go wrong, but worth checking
