Coming from a Triumph 1050 Tiger I am on a quest to buy a Tenere.
As some of you may have read I totaled my 1050 and now am looking for a Tenere, I found one in Alamosa, CO 2400 miles extended Yamaha 5 year warranty for $10,500.00 W/bags and some goodies but after three weeks of corresponding with the seller he reveilles he needs to pay it off to get the Title!!
The search continued until two days ago another Colorado Tenere W/1900 miles 5 Year Yamaha Warranty and Woody's Wheels 18'x21" and some other stuff no bags $12,000.
Put down $100.00 deposit on it should seal the deal next weekend.
Now my question is the Wheels, I found out they are Tubed but can be convert the rear into Tubeless.
You Woody's Wheel riders how do these feel on the road and what dual sport style tire can I get, I have used Michelin Anakee 2's on my old 98 Tiger 17'x19".
I need some millage as I ride to all parts of the west to get too locations so 80% will be highway and I carry a load of gear for camping, big luggers won't do but will be doing some scrambling in the back country.

I don't expect street performance by no means my Canyon carving days are closing just one up Solo stuff.

The Hight of the bike I feel will be as my 1050 32.9 inch from the ground but don't know what the height will be on this Tenere.

All help Welcome..
Thanks Pete

Woody's wheels are definitely a plus on this bike but they create their own issues. There are possible fitment problems if you run a skid plate and/or more suspension travel. I think front fender mounts had to be modded too. This could limit your tire choices down the road. Woody has several rim, spoke and hub options for the Tenere' to so who knows what you have in those pieces. Handling wise I understand they work well on road and great off road, plus Woody's Wheels are tuff and pricey. Keep in mind whoever had the wheels installed was probably serious about something and I would bet it was off road riding.

Something to think about.

Here is where WASP starts playing with Woody's Wheels:

Seems like a lot of money for the bike and he doesn't have the stock wheels with it. Were they destroyed or what happened to them? Seems like you might want to do a little checking, a 21 is not going to be as good on the street

The shop took the old rims; you think $12k is high with 1900 miles and four more years of warranty?

i don't think wheels that different size add value, you said you will mostly be riding on pavement. The first bike is 1500 less and has bags. If you are worried about the title you send the money to the title holder with a bill of sale, they send the title to you. I'm not big on extended warranties, some people are, but what is it worth, 1/2? Again stock wheels are going to handle better on the street. You asked, I just gave you my free advice, and everyone knows what that's worth

Your advice is well taken thank you.
The other guy pulled the add and disappeared so I am in the bag with this one.

I like to have the title with the owners name on it in his hand and sign it over may be OK for some but not me, if it was a dealer I could understand.

Yes I would have liked to pay the lesser price but not for the hassle, bags or no bags.

Its not a hassle just standard procedure every day business. Make the check out the bank or actually go to the bank if its local and pay if off. Done it dozens of times in both directions with zero problems

Wasp is actually selling his Woody wheels separate to the bike - for $2100

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/chidlow/motorcycles/xt1200z-super-tenere-21-front-wheel-and-18-rear-wheel-package/1019720094

You could probably find out from Woody what exact wheels that bike has - I'm sure he hasn't done too many tenere wheels. For those wheels to be worthwhile for you, you'll need to be serious about going offroad, and as well, check that the previously mentioned mods have been done so that the 21" front works and has proper clearances.

Worst case and you don't like the wheels, you might find someone to do an exchange for stock wheels plus cash. Just a pity it doesn't come with stock as well...

I've done it a bunch of times too. Usually you are in the bank about 15 minutes.

I guess I don't get it, if 1500 doesn't matter than why don't you just buy new, since you are not familiar with whats been done and by who, that extented warranty may not be worth the paper it's written. Those wheels don't increase the value.

I respect your concerns but as I stated the $10,500.00 guy fell of the map pulled his add and never returned my calls.
This bike will work and I will figure it out as I have with many other bikes I have owned over the years.
As far as bags I am looking at a few options Never found OEM bags worth a Sheet anyway.
It's not going to be anything like my Triumph but it will be more of what I was looking for from day one; The Tenere was an expensive beast when it first came out in the states like almost $17k reason I didn't buy one back then.
Hell even the salesman at Yamaha told me to jump on this one, they are selling bagless 2012's new for $14k around New Mexico not including tax and stealer prep.
I have owned some big bikes being 6'3" 1988 cr500 was one trench digging mondo power big wheels and was like riding a rodeo Bull at times as well as a 1998 Triumph 900 Tiger. I am just wonder if any of you gent's had a chance to bounce a big Tenere with this wheel configuration?

I bought a 2001 BMW "S" for cash - flew out to Philly and rode it home to Iowa.

IT TOOK 10 MONTHS TO GET THE TITLE...I HAD TO THREATEN THE PREVIOUS OWNER WITH JAIL TIME.

I would never ever buy another "anything" without the title in hand.

The deal is never that good for putting up with that much long distance hassle....that's just me.

Go for it.
The Woody's wheels with the 21" front look good. Certainly unique.
It's got crash bars, looks clean. Price isn't a steal, but not terrible.
If it's been trail beat you'll be able to see when you pick up, just decline if you feel uncomfortable.
Title should not be an issue. Get it transferred when you pick up the bike. Common thing.

Thank you!!

I certainly will look it over thoroughly..

I am old school a hand shake is a deal but not these days you have to be careful.

I found nothing over the past month within 400 miles that I could beat for $12,000.00 other than the one for Ten Five. 1.900.00 miles is barely broken in others I have seen for more with higher miles are back east or over 800 miles away gas adds up.

If I don't like the layout I will just walk away and hope the guy is kind enough and understanding and hands me the $100.00 back for holding it seeing he still has it listed.

By the way it just so happens Woody's is right down the street from the bike location, I plan on paying him a visit before I head back to New Mexico and talk about tubeless rear.

Woody's set mine up to run tubeless with center spokes. So far it's been fine.
