Taking it to the shop today for the first vale check. A little early at 25k but my guy is not busy right now and can take time to do it right. I normally do my own checks but with so many bad experiences on here with this bike I just decided to pass the buck literally speaking.

Really good dealership doing the work and I bought the bike there.

How much did they quote for the job?

Per the Yamaha book $500 if they pull the cams but half that or less to just check. They are honest to me I do a good amount of business there yearly. I've know the mechanic for over 20 years. He will do me right on the job as he knows how picky I can be. A valve spec on the limit will be moved to the middle range.

I feel $500 isn't to bad considering Triumph gets $1000-1200 on the 800 tigers and that's at 12k miles. I prefer to do my own work and have in the past adjusted shim under bucket valves. Except on this bike my first Yamaha ever I just don't feel like messing with it and I know those guys need work this time of year. I don't mind paying for it to be done as I know he will do a good job. He once did a top end on my RMZ450 in a couple of hours, bike fired up 2nd kick and ran better than new.

Please ask your guy to record the measurements and then please post the results of your check. It seemed like no one had to actually do any adjustment on the first check for a long time and then suddenly (starting with mine :() there were around 5 guys reporting that they needed adjustment on the first check. Mine had 3 of the 4 exhaust tight. Two were right at the limit but one was at .0065. ???

I had my first valve check recently at 32,000 miles while I was recovering from knee surgery.
All the intake valves were loose and had to be reshimmed.
Dealer charged me $314, including new spark plugs and TB synch.

I picked the bike up Saturday. All four exhaust valves were tight. All intakes well within spec. Mechanic told me the Tenenere is a bear to work on. He did a good job I coukdnt even tell he worked on the bike other than the valve cover was clean. He pulled the battery and electrical panel back to properly access the cam reinstall. He cleaned my throttle bodies which had heavy carbon deposits. Sync'd the throttle bodies and installed new spark plugs. The bill was steep but he won't reuse valve cover gaskets at all so I had that on the bill plus all those rubber grommets at bolt locations plus a clutch cover gasket. $102 in parts including spark plugs. Labor was $534. I knew it wouldn't be cheap but I know its right now. I talked with him about an hour Saturday and he said if it were him he'd never worry about the valves again. Its a solid motor and movement is unlikely down the road. I trust this guy I've known him for over 20 years and when I pop a racebike motor he is who I call.

The bike runs fantastic, very smooth. I feel compared to what Triumph is getting for the same procedure in the $1200 range mine was a steal at $700. I probably could have done it but considering the learning curve on this thing its money well spent IMO. Btw the bike has exactly 25,186 miles on it.

Sounds like a bargain Roy. The trick is to find a mechanic that you trust as much as your doctor. A surgeon who has operated a fair bit so to speak.I'll hit the magic number this year and have one scoped out.

Very true. One if my reasons for buying this bike at this dealership back in '10 on the PDP deal. I knew he would service it timely and correctly. He knows bikes and that's all he works on there no four wheeler junk on his 3 lifts ever. He also knows me very well having wrenched on my various brands over the years. A good trust worthy mechanic these days is a priceless commodity IMO. I am glad I have one no matter what it cost. I can handle most things mechanical on a motorcycle but sometimes it's just worth taking a back seat to a more qualified individual.
