Touring or Sport mode

Funny, I ride in Sport with default Traction Control settings in the city, even in stop and go. I ride with Touring with default Traction Control (swapping to Sport if I need to be zippy) on the Highway. And I ride with Touring and no Traction Control almost entirely in an off-road capacity.

Really I never thought f that? Just kidding............this comes under the 'to each his own'. I just like... as in really like, the Anthony tune with the Arrow header and stock can. It allows me to travel in T mode which I find smoother and still have passing power in the mountains in 5th gear and back to 6th. zoom zoom like a Mazda.

I'm not trying to stir the pot, I'm really curious about what appeals about reducing the engine braking. I use engine braking. My FJR had much less engine braking and when I moved to the S10 that was something that I really liked about the bike.

No negative to Anthony's flash efforts. The engine braking is just one aspect of the magic he can do.

I agree....BUT....I also agree with Eric. I don't understand why a person WOULDN'T like her engine braking. Especially in tighter turn/curves. At normal/legal speed limits, it's just....on the gas....off the gas....smooth as silk.

65,000 miles of almost exclusively S mode. I rode with the touring mode at first, because sport mode felt pretty snappy and abrupt. It took some training to throw off the muscle memory from using the throttles on my Road King and V-Strom, but once that was accomplished, touring mode became a dim memory. I've switched it on a couple times over the years to remind myself how it responded, but it just feels sluggish.

The engine braking doesn't bother me. Just like the throttle response, it felt weird at first in comparison to other bikes I've owned. But the same wrist control that goes into modulating S mode also goes into adjusting to the engine braking. In a lot of ways I actually like it; I think it makes it easier when riding on curvy roads, because you can modulate your speed just by throttle control without using the brakes so much.

I've never ridden a bike that's been flashed, so it might well be awesome. I've just gotten used to the way the S10 rides, and I've never found it to be the intolerable bucking bronco that others have.

Okay, so I am still very new to my S10. Only had it a couple months and 4000 miles on it (3500 highway). With as much highway riding as I do, I have always left it in Touring mode. Was going to post a reply with homelike "what is sport mode, and how do I get set it", but thought I would get ran out of the forum.

I will have to start playing with sport mode and see what's it like. Maybe I will go with the S on Street and T on dirt route, like others have posted.

Try with tcs off too. Adds a bit of fun factor to the mix.

Coming from an FZ1, the engine braking was a bit much in S mode. Yes, I re-cal’d my wrist and it was ok, but when I was tired or in traffic I’d switch to T mode.
Now with the flash (AVC) it’s S mode unless it’s rainy hard or I’m in slippery conditions.

I stick with Touring for fuel economy and i don't see much different in Spot mode except over sensitive throttle.
In my experience there is no difference in fuel consumption between the 2 modes.

I feel the difference between the modes most keenly when I have been in S for a long time and switch to T. At first it feels like something is obstructing the power delivery (which there is) - almost like there is something wrong with the bike. After a while in T mode I don't notice it anymore.

I did 3xxx miles on clock already. I stick with Touring for fuel economy and i don't see much different in Spot mode except over sensitive throttle. Plus, i have full arrow so whatever mode is all fun.
thats pretty much the way it works for me as well, I prefer smooth and the throttle response is not smooth in sport mode, the actual horsepower is the same in either mode but sport mode is more sensitive. My 2018 is more sensitive than my 2013 was but it also gets considerably better mpg so I’m really not very interested in changing anything.

The power delivery is completely different between the two. From a stand still on my same "drag test area", Sport mode always gets me to the end of it faster. I don't get anywhere past third gear in Touring and I'm just grabbing fourth when it's in Sport when doing that test. I'm almost 59 years old. So my reflexes are not as good as a guy under 30. I would like to put the bike on a dyno machine and actually see the numbers between sport and touring mode.

I believe there is no difference in the power output between the S and T modes, it is simply the ride-by-wire mapping that gives a softer response in T mode.

That's exactly it. The power band is adjusted in T vs S. The biggest thing is the reason S feels so snatchy is because of the sensitivity of the input from the throttle, to the output by the ECU to the injectors.

I cant believe there is no difference in power between the 2. Mine is flashed by the way. In T mode its a pussycat. In S mode it throws me back in the seat and i have to grip tight to hold myself in place. 2 different bikes.

How do you think "power" is determined? It's a fueling map, which includes timing advance, etc. But the fact is you're still working with the same engine and the same components, the only thing different is the delivery of fuel to the engine. That's the beauty of throttle by wire.

Take a look here for an idea of what we mean: https://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?threads/flash-tune-anyone-care-to-share-knowledge-of-the-software-maps.22482/post-317946
