Tour mode and TC2 offroad for me...better control. Sport mode and wherever the TC system happens to be set when playing thru the twisties...good grunt when torquing it up.

To me, the power and speed the Tenere will generate is very deceptive. I'm forever looking down and going WAAY faster than it feels on or off road.

By contrast, on the FJR, at least I knew I was hauling freight when I wicked it up as it was hard to miss all that torque. The power just comes on so much differently on the Tenere that it just sneaks right up on me. I'm luvin' this bike more w/ each ride though.

The best thing about this is that we're not stuck without choices.

Indeed. Also, the fact that different people make different choices, means they did a good job of providing two interesting and useful choices, rather than the sort of non-choice where all options but one are useless to everyone.

I agree K about the choices. I have been loving the choice of Sport or Touring. I have spent more time in my 175 miles so far, in T mode. Maybe it's that it has been hard keeping the revs down while doing my break-in time and I find it easier in T mode to keep said rpm's below 4000.
I think I read in the users manual that Touring mode is only below a certain speed, after that the throttle input is the same. Something like that and I may be wrong ... I'll have to look it up again.
Best,
DT

I found Sport mode riding 2-up, gives that extra, when you got extra on the back....
I find Sport mode riding solo gives that extra grin factor. ;D I started off in touring mode during the break-in period, but that's all done. Let the fun begin. ::014::

Call me crazy- but I like the two modes; just wish the two modes were sport and super sport ::018::

Call me a 47 year old squid if you like- but I like to ride my Tenere like a motorcycle rather than a scooter ::001::

My anonymous friend who may or may not work for Yamaha Corporate says the mappings are the same.

Yamaha ran a highly covert test to prove the psychological effects of the power of words.

They found that 90% of the time with the Touring mode people road slower and then faster when on Sport mode.

They concluded at the end the experiment that a simple word would make people drive faster or slower. Sport or Touring.

Personally, I find it a completely believable fake story.

It is truly a ghost in the machine.

Super T, I love you.

I'd rather have TC 1-2 on the hand grip, and S or T on the side of the dash. I do think T mode helps when two up with bobbling your passengers head. I fixed that by running several neck strengthening drills with my wife. Mostly me nodding "Yes, dear."

T mode? S mode? I put mine right in the middle, sort of as a compromise. You know, best of both worlds.

That would be the coveted TS, or Super Tenere, mode. Highly prized and so far non-reproducible by BMW. Top secret stuff. R ::022:: ::026::

On the 2012 R1, they still have the drive mode selection on the right hand grip side, just as the S10 does, but they also have a switch near the left handgrip for the SIX traction control modes. The TC modes can be changed on the fly, with a flick of that switch and a momentary closure of the throttle. You still have to come to a stop to turn TC off altogether. I'll bet that future S10's will have a left hand TC switch that can be selected on the fly.

I must say that I find most of the electronic wizardry of the Tenere rather useless. I cannot stand driving in T mode. Really if you can't modulate the power of this bike in S mode there is something wrong. Perhaps if they called it snow, Ice, and rain mode I would accept it. Traction control 1 is the same way, what is the point. ABS is great. I find that I am riding the Ducati more and more to get some excitement. The Tenere is comfy, handles great, hides its weight well, super reliable, but exciting it is not. I better get on the Power Commander bandwagon soon.

People often say the exact same thing about the Honda ST1100/1300, and yet they love them and ride and ride and ride.......

Let's not forget hurricane mode. I was caught in Vermont during Irene this past summer. Without a doubt I appreciated have "T" and TCS1 dialed into the bike. It allowed me to give my full concentration to attempting to staying on the road (more or less) through the most hellacious cross winds I have ever experienced on a bike...or probably anywhere. I don't use Touring mode very often, but it served a purpose for me that day, and I'm glad to have it.

I used the touring mode in France a few months back. I reckon it improved the fuel consumption by at least 10%. Turned it straight back off when I returned to the twisties of the UK.

That's weird, I go to France for the Twisty's!

I thought T mode only limited power in 1st - 4th, so I would assume on the straight bits fuel consumption would be the same?
