To ECU Flash or Not to ECU Flash

To my S-10 friends from the Colorado summer party, especially Snakebitten (the Old Salt), Jaxon because he'll probably be doing it) and Dallara (because he tends to be the technical genius of this dubious crowd).
I am planning to go to Alaska in my near future (next Summer) and was wondering if (while I have some down time) I should take out the ECU and have it flashed? I'm sure this has been discussed a thousand times but I can't find the thread in the forum. I have heard that it greatly improved to off idle lag and makes for a much smoother throttle response.
This is my first big bike and don't know any better than to ask the question again. And if I do it, what is the company that does it the best, or let Jaxon handle those detail? And is $500 about right for this mod? Thanks for any info that will help me make this decision.

I recently did it after about 10 months of ownership. Eliminated the 1-3 gear power restrictions, added power in all gears, made fueling response spot-on, eliminated engine buzziness that put my hand to sleep and notably improved fuel economy. Highly recommended, send it to AF1 Moto in Texas.

Hey Luke good to hear from you bro!
Twinrider answered all the questions, everyone who has it says its money well spent. I still haven't gotten mine done all my extra money is educating our son. He is a senior this year so hope is on the horizon. ;D I bet you being a pilot you would appreciate the flash. More thrust is good

My ECU is in Texas right now getting reflashed. I have 17,000 miles on the bike and will post the differences I feel when I get it back.

Rob - I will be most interested in your assessment as my scoot has 16000+ on the clock and have yet to pull the trigger on the re-flash.

PM if you'd like or give us ALL the details.

I am waiting with baited breath

Luke,

Here is my personal recommendation:

Come to Texas. Bring your ECU and\or your Tenere with ECU. :)
Stay at the swamp with us a few days.
Eat Mexican food and discuss life. (The exploits of kids, mostly)

Visit Texas A&M Kingsville and meet the meatheads. (Eat more Mexican food)
Go fishing at Baffin Bay.
Watch a really fun Division II football game. (Small College Ball is really fun)
Talk Softball until 2:AM

Oh, I forgot........stop by New Braunfels and eat some Mexican Food while they flash your ECU.

Then, next summer, take me to Alaska with you. You might need my help if the roadside bushes do not keep you upright! :)

The Gristmill in New Braunfels is pretty good. I've eaten there!

I'll be back to Texas in October, I can't wait!

I have just on 14K on my bike and have an appointment to get it flashed tomorrow in Roanoke. I'll be sure to let you know how I like it. $450 is a bunch of cash to get right what should have been right from the factory, but I continue to love everything about the bike except for the wimpy ass engine (and how much it weighs). My 10 year old 90,000 mile SV650 feels faster ::26::

It doesn't take much research of threads here or on ADVrider to see that there are only positive reviews of the ECUnleashed Gen 2 re-flash. I think you will also see that many say things to the effect of "best bang for the buck mod you can make to the Super Tenere...", etc. To put it simply, it makes a great motorcycle even better. As others have said, there literally are no downsides, and the $449 spent on the re-flash certainly reaps far more reward and a much better return on investment that things like aftermarket pipes, etc. that not only cost more, but do less.

If memory serves me correctly Jaxon at RideOnADV does not actually do ECUnleashed re-flashes. He sells a lot of other great products and makes the toughest skid plate you can get for the Super Tenere, but I don't think he is an authorized ECUnleashed dealer. You can check for sure here: http://ecunleashed.com/dealers/find-a-dealer/dealers-usa/

The quickest way to get your ECU re-flashed is to either visit an authorized ECUnleashed Tuning Center Dealer or send it to one. That said, the shop that has arguably done by far the most ECUnleashed is, as has been mentioned here, AF-1 Racing in New Braunfels, TX. That's where I had my first one done, and the best thing about AF-1 is their exemplary customer service. Usually your ECU is re-flashed and sent back out the *SAME DAY* as received, and you can't get much better than that. I've been doing business with AF-1 for years and they are simply the best in the business when it comes to taking care of their customers.

However, to insure the fastest possible service you must first call or e-mail Ed Cook (he's the owner, and resident re-flash specialist) at AF-1 Racing and give him the information he needs to order your own personal re-flash file from ECUnleashed Tuning Technologies in California. He'll need your bike's VIN, a number or two off the ECU itself, and any mods, etc. you may have done to the bike like headers, pipes, etc. if applicable. Just drop Ed an e-mail or give him a call and he'll fill you in on what's needed, how to ship, how long it will take, etc., and tell him I told you to get in touch with him. Contact info for Ed and AF-1 is as follows:

http://www.af1racing.com/store/Scripts/default.asp

AF-1 Racing
699 W. San Antonio Street
New Braunfels, TX 78130
Phone: 830-626-3966
Toll-free: 877-626-3966
Fax: 830-626-3969
E-mail: mailto:info@af1racing.com

Office and Showroom Hours:
10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. (CST) Monday-Friday
Saturday by Appointment Only

Just in case you need it, AF-1 also has a shop in Austin, TX, though the re-flashes are done in New Braunfels:

http://vespaaustin.com/

AF-1 Racing & Vespa of Austin
304 E Cesar Chavez
Austin, TX 78701
Phone: 512-482-8377
Office and Showroom Hours:
10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. (CST) Tuesday-Friday
10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (CST) Saturday

Note that Ed Cook is usually at the New Braunfels shop Monday through Thursday, and then often at their Austin location on Friday and Saturday. However, his e-mail address is the mailto:info@af1racing.com shown above... And yes, that is *his* real e-mail addy.

Again, give Ed Cook a call or drop him a line, and tell him I sent you. I'm sure you will be pleased in any dealing you have with Ed and AF-1.

Hope this helps!

Dallara

(and one more time, before it comes up again - I am in no way employed or otherwise affiliated with AF-1 Racing other than to be a satisfied customer)

Just do it ::008::

A lot more midrange power in lower gears and a less peaky delivery, far better throttle response in all gears, no stumble, smoother running and at least a 5% reduction in fuel use - what's not to like

You guys are the greatest!!! What a nice resource to have at my fingertips. That's all except Snakebitten who lulls me into his evil Snakepit lair with offers of food, beverage, and possibly women (I'm a bachelor ;-), and then THROWS me under the bus with some snide remark and being the only guy in S-10 history that has crashed the beast with it still standing vertical! To that comment I would give him a hardy **** you! But am not allowed to use that kind of language on the forum..... :)
I'm going to do it, once I read how to get the sucker out of the black hole it lives in and that mysterious 5th? Hex ahead bolt???
SnakeB. That's for the kind offer but school started yesterday and my first period has 46 high school in it. No time now to vacation at your ranch. Would love to have company on the Big Trip!

Twin rider, you had all the right words. Tks!

Hannabone - Great picture. Looks just like you

Dallara, you're still 'da Man!!!

Rasher - you're a man after my own heart. Just do it!!!

Outstanding info from you all!!!! Thanks. Luke

If I hadn't seen it myself, I wouldn't have believed it. :)

For those that don't know, Luke crashed. His S10 didn't.

Gotta be a pic around here somewhere. LOL

I have about 3000 miles since the reflash that Jaxon handled for me. Wish I had done it sooner. Almost 21,000 miles total now, and the bike just keeps improving.

The power and smoothness are noticeably increased with the flash, and get this, the cruising highway mileage is better than before. On a recent trip to Hot Springs NC from Upstate NY, I got a high of 54 mpg on a tank of ethanol free gas, and we were not riding slowly. Average for the trip was just over 50 mpg for 2000+ miles.

This is truly a case of having your cake and eating it too. The bike runs like it should have from the factory. No regrets. The best $$ spent so far.

I plan on getting a flash for sure, especially after the difference I just experienced on my zx14r. The only thing I'm not sure of is if I should wait until after I get headers. Has the flash been perfected to tune for the headers yet or will I still need a PCv regardless?

Fueling at low RPM's is off, in my opinion. Still surged at low RPM's with headers post GenII flash.

That gave me cause for pause on the rest of the map. I got mine dyno tuned anyway...
