I decided to try a German bike.

I think the one in the photo is a three-cylinder K75 (you knew from the exhaust….square: 4-cylinder k100,….triangular 3-cylinder K75)
Around here, there are very few of those on the street. the vast majority are dismantled awaiting spare parts or have been used as parts donors. It is curious, but there are more BMW series R (boxer) circulating on the streets, than series K. Perhaps the R broke less, or today spare parts are obtained. The truth is that in these latitudes, the K series is not in demand….while there is a lot of demand for 80/90 models…to transform them into a “cafe racer” style. (Honda CB 750/900 F, Bmw R100/R80) are among the most demanded for this transformation
I still remember the famous BMW K1… although the motorcycle publications always called it one of the “worst” motorcycles of its time.

The K bikes are pretty nice, but the boxer engine was the BMW trademark in the same fashion as the pushrod 45 degree V-twin is for Harley.

Mine is a 1992 K75S, a horizontal triple and it's quite possibly the smoothest motorcycle I have owned. A 30 year old bike with fuel injection and ABS is pretty remarkable but that stuff makes them a bit more difficult to keep running in places where parts availability might not be great.

My plan is to go through it and do a full service including valve adjustment (much easier than the Tenere) and then take it on a week or so adventure across the country, or half way across and back. I should have less than $1500 total into the bike at that point so if I have a catastrophic failure I guess I can decide if I want to just abandon it.

Catastrophic failures, you will not have. They are reliable and with very good quality materials. I was trying to remember, something was going around in my head about some little problem that the K had. Searching made me remember. The small knock of the cardan when decelerating, and the oil smoke when starting. The transmission shaft knock was only noticed by those who drove it and compared it with a chain transmission. The smoke when starting, we all noticed. At that time, everyone (due to lack of knowledge), thought that when the engine was lying down, the rings wore out faster on the lower side :) ….many years later the theories were that when it was parked for a long time on the side stand , a little amount of oil drained between the rings towards the compression chamber (this seemed to be correct, so users always recommended leaving it on the center stand). And the rest of that K series, was that at that same time the CBR 600/1000F..the GSX 750/1100 R….the Ninja 750/1000….the Yamaha exup…appeared…then that K series (including the K1), were between a tourism and a sports motorcycle. But, when a K1 (red and yellow)….was parked between any of the other bikes, the K1 drew all eyes.

I rode a K1 once on a saturday. I had defended my PHD on the day before, and drank the devil's juice until i couldn't drink anymore.

I woke up saturday, and for the first time in 5 years, didn't have anything hanging over my head. I had a hangover, but nothing hanging over my head.

St. Paul BMW/Honda (long gone) was offering test rides of the K1 in May of 1992 (said so in the newspaper in the motorcycle section of the want ads. remember those?). I rode my 1971 R60/5 and said, "i'd like a ride." They said, "sure," and off i went.

My BMW references were an 1974 R90s and a 1977 r100rs (demos from my motorcycle shop days), but the K1 blew me away. WOW.

However, i was broke, unemployed, and soon to be homeless, so the furthest it went was a test ride. it was a great ride for its day.

It is George Mainwaring yes. The Dads' Army museum was in the same town but closed until 17th March apparently. They used to film a series set by the sea (English Channel) 60 miles inland from a totally different sea (North Sea)
