A lot of us were waiting in line at the diner for breakfast when they opened (7:30 if I recall) and that may be a good place to meet up w/people. Good luck!

BAM! It was a blast. We did the entire loop. It's about 100 Miles of dirt!
But not the Ouray side and Karson is an animal for riding it two up.

So is anyone venturing over Black Bear Pass this weekend? Would love to see video's of Tenere riders going down the steps..... Will be out there the end of July for RMAR and really want to do that pass. The view after the steps is worth the risk to me.... ::013::

Advice, smaller bike :lamp:

But if you decide fate is in your deck of cards make sure your life insurance policy is paid up. :)

And yes I rode it on a DR650 last year. Can it be done on a S10, yes if you're a big burly guy I guess. For me the S10 is just to big for that step section.

Good luck.

BTW enjoying the pics guys keep them coming! ::008::

6'2" 225lbs. Have ridden KTM 250 and 450 in the tight technical woods for 10 years. Done a few enduro's. I feel good about my ability, just wondering about the bike, and if it has issues bottoming out over the steps. Since I live near the mountains I've done tons of hill climbs, which mean you usually gotta come back down so that doesn't bother me. Stand on the pegs for better balance, fingers on the front brake, boot on the rear, and work it....

I was not trying to down play your ability one bit. But the steps section is steep and off camber and bottoming out might be a problem especially since you are on the heavy side unless you've upgraded your suspension. You are tall so thats a plus. inam 5'9" so a bit vertically challenged on a 600 lb bike off camber on a steep grade. i too have extensive off road bacground. For me it was a no brainer I had both bikes out there at the same time I simply seen no reason to attempt it on the S10 with a perfectly setup DR650 at my disposal. Even on the real tall DR it wasn't a walk in the park at the steps. It's steep and a very irregular surface. By all means good luck and video it once you do it. The road up from 550 was not bad, steep but very doable, once past the steps its easy just steep but basically a gravel road with tight switchbacks.

Heading south out of Ouray on 550 there was a forest access road on the left that leads to Engineers Pass. I started it but quit after about 1/2 mile. Too ruff! Some jeep guy made fun of us saying, "that's a really pretty bike but you won't make it on this trail." I believed him.

Hey Buelligan,

First, it was a real honor to meet you.
You are a true gent. And a generous fella, to boot.

That's county RD 18. Looks real inviting as you ride by. And it IS a short cut to Engineering pass. (In leu of Silverton-CR2-Forks)

But, as you say, it's a bit ruff. :)

I know a couple of studs that road it. I simply bow to them. I too went in about 3 switchbacks deep and came to my senses.

I did that today. Way over my head. But by the time I came to my senses, there was no way I was going back down that.
I've owned my tenere for 700 miles and this was the first time taking it off road.
And I was alone.

I know pretty stupid.

But I can say I didn't drop it and that my Yamaha skid plate has a real nice dent in it.
At least the jeep tour in front of me stopped a few time for me to catch up and ask if I was doing ok.

Stock tires too.

Dang am I sore. Tomorrow won't be fun.

It's a tough one. I rode it on my DR650 and no way would I take my Tenere up that road. Not cause it wouldn't do it, I just do not care to beat it up that bad. It was not much fun on a DR650.

I know. That's the info I was looking for. I would love to attempt on a small bike, just won't have one to use. If it means walking it down then that's what we will do..... Thanks.

I rallied hard today and got from the KOA to the south side of Fort Worth. I saw it was another 275 to go and decided to hang it up. 915 miles in 15 hours was a good run. I had the iron butt in me, but it would've landed me in BFE and I'd already seen way too many deer. I'll be home for lunch tomorrow.

It was great meeting everybody and doing some awesome rides. Thanks again to those who helped me so much on Monday at Imogene.

After a week of mountain climbing, you are a crazy man. :)
I can't imagine.

We made 300 miles and shut it down. Although the last 80 was a huge wind-dust storm with outrageous gusts.

Get some rest. Stay safe Texas brother.
